From this page:

Shto Mi E Milo - (Macedonian traditional)

Shto mi e milo, milo i drago,                        How I would like to have a shop
Vo Struga grada, mamo, dukyan da imam.          In the town of Struga,
Lele varai, mome, mome Kalino,                   Hurry, young Kalino.
Vo Struga grada, mamo, dukyan da imam.

Na kepentsite, mamo da sedam,                   To sit by the door
Struzhkite momi, mamo, momi da gledam.          And watch the young girls of Struga go by,
Lele varai, mome, mome Kalino,                   Hurry, young Kalino.
Struzhkite momi, mamo, momi da gledam.

Koga na voda, voda mi odat,                        As they go to fetch water
So tia stomni mamo, stomni shareni.                With their colorful jugs,
Lele varai, mome, mome Kalino,                   Hurry, young Kalino.
So tia stomni mamo, stomni shareni.

Na ovai izvor, izvor studeni,                         And meet with their friends at the well,
Tam da se z'druzkhi, mamo, z'druzkhi soberat.    Hurry, young kalino.
Lele varai, mome, mome Kalino,
Tam da se z'druzkhi, mamo, z'druzkhi soberat.

Nah, Joe, in this case it was just a fluke, i.e. a lucky break, because I happened to have been in that singing workshop early this year.

Just for a change of pace listen to this sound sample of a

rock version!!

Helen, you're amazing.
This page has a translation, and this page has a very nice recording.

Shto Mi E Milo (1980s version), Macedonia, Yugoslavia

How glad I am to live here in the village of Struga, where I have a shop, and sit and watch the women go down to the well with their many-colored pitchers, where they laugh and talk with their friends.

Shto mi e milo, milo em drago
Vo Struga grada, mamo, dukyan da imam.
Lele varai, mome, mome kalino,
Vo Struga grada, mamo, dukyan da imam.

Koga na voda, voda mi odat,
So tie stomni, mamo, stomni shareni.
Lele varai, mome, mome kalino,
So tie stomni, mamo, stomni shareni.
Na ovai izvor, izvor studeni,
Tam da se zdruzhki, mamo, zdruzhki soberat.
Lele varai, mome, mome kalino,
Tam da se zdruzhki, mamo, zdruzhki soberat.

I still swear I've heard this song with English lyrics, with a meaning totally unrelated to the Slavic song or to "Follow Me To The Forest."

Found it! The hard way, by doing a Google search for Bulgarian songs and then looking through lists of songs until something rang a bell in my memory.

Some pages say it's Bulgarian and others say Macedonian. Not being as good as geography as I was when I was a pup I don't know whether that is the same area or different.

Shto Mi e Milo

Shto mi e milo. milo i drago,
Vo struga grada. mamo, dukyan da imam.
Lele varai, mome. mome kalino,
Vo struga grada, mamo. dukyan da imam.
Na kepentsite, mamo, da sedam,
Struzhkite momi, mamo. momi da gledam.
Lele varai, mome. mome kalino,
Struzhkite momi, mamo, momi da gledam.
Koga na voda, voda mi odat,
So tia stomni mamo, stomni. shareni.
Lele varai, mome, mome kalino,
So tia stomni mamo, stomni, shareni.
Na ovai izvor, izvor studeni,
Tam da se z'druzkhi mamo, z'druzkhi soberat.
Lele varai, mome, mome kalino,
Tam da se z'druzkhi mamo, z'druzkhi soberat.

I went to a singing workshop at the Tamar Valley Folk Festival in Georgetown, Tasmania, Oz in January this year. We sang this in its original language. From memory I think that it is Bulgarian, but I have to try to find the songsheet which isn't where I thought it was and therefore could be anywhere in the sea of paper I call my "office" or worse still, somewhere else in the house.

Thre is no way I will remember the lyrics because my lyric-memory chip was not installed at birth.

One of the workshop leaders was a Mudcatter named Jenny, but I don't know what her Mudcat name is.

Click here to get to the website of Lady Siobhan to download an MP3 of this song. The tune is very familiar, but I can't place it.
What's the tune?
This is gonna bug me...

Yeah, that's the person. I haven't actually tried writing snail-mail yet. Partly because I don't know what to say... "Can I steal your song because I love it and I'm too poor to pay you even IF I ever make any money from it" kinda doesn't cut it, unfortunately.

That's why I'm looking for the history and the original song... maybe I can do my own version?

And her email addy comes back as not existing.

I found this wonderful song on the webite of Lady Siobhan at IUMA, and I wondered if any Mudcatters out there know of the history of the song? Or what the original is?

She lists "Follow Me to the Forest--An acappella invitation to enjoy the woods and your lover. Based on an Eastern European folksong." as her song description.

Here are the lyrics:

Forest Enchanted

What is this longing
Longing inside me?
My spirit yearns for beauty
Beauty of the Lady.

Follow me to the Forest
Forest Enchanted
My spirit yearns for beauty
Beauty of the Lady.

Hear the woods beckon
Beckon so strongly:
My fey heart hears and and answers
Answers their calling

Follow me to the Forest
Forest Enchanted
My fey heart hears and and answers
Answers their calling

Come and wrap your arms
Your arms around me:
Lay me down beneath the green and
Show me how you love me

Follow me to the Forest
Forest Enchanted
Lay me down beneath the green and
Show me how you love me

I should probably ask her, but Mudcat is easier.

So, does someone have the info?

Thanks,
~*sirepseh*~
