Just a by-the-by.....

Around here the term "crotch rocket" is pretty well confined to the likes of the Kawasaki 900 Ninja and such bikes, but a fellow I work with came up with a better name — "donor cycles."

HEY MBO!
Being a young fella is tough, we have all been through it. BUT, to many folks around here get out of the kitchen rather than sticking around in the fray. All that folks say to each other, we still kinda like each other. Look, Richard Bridge and GeorgeH and I got fairly heavily into it discussing Ireland, and I can say, I think we are good friends. So, stick around old friend, and get old and grey like and with the rest of us...

Not sure Namaenson, Harleys with their rumble, buzzing 2 strokes, old British thumpers (ever seen a Panther 600 - ?650 single?), BMWs and the Japanese stuff, etc. have all had their appeal to me even though I have not had the pleasure of riding many of them (have ridden up to 900s when I was young and before I cared about the law though...).

I like to think that all these machines offer something although I would be inclined to agree that the quieter ones tend to be the better ones. I got myself banned (fortunately on my own Honda CB 200) for drink and driving when 21 and I accepted (rather than kicked aginst) that I deserved the ban...

You know I mentioned the noise as being obnoxious but there is still, on visceral level, an appreciation of the low rumble of a Harley. The problem is that some riders get their manhood wrapped up in the sound level and do what they can to make it louder. These are people who do not understand the philosophy of "speak softly and carry big stick". They haven't figured out that a quiet competant person carries more weight than the brash loudmouth. The same thing goes for motorcycles.

Kendall, I had motorbikes for several years - only small ones like Honda 250s but I covered quite a few miles. I think that the best bit of riding advice I was ever given was "assume that every car driver is a maniac out to kill you". I am just wondering if I am alone in thinking that those who have ridden motorbikes (and survived) are a lot more aware of the road than people who have only driven cars.

unnecessary noise is unnecessary noise no matter where it comes from, and people who delight in making unnecessary noise, are, IMO...unnecessary. Believe it or not, I am an ex biker! I gave it up because there are more assholes in cars than on bikes. My wife (at the time) and I were riding in St. Martin, when we rounded a curve, some dink in a car met us on the wrong side of the road. I had no place to go but OFF the road, and, of course there was a rock pile there at the point of enrty. I wound up on the bottom, she wound up on top, and the bike in the middle. My right hind leg took months to get back to normal, and, I havn't ridden since.

Yeah,I like the "throaty rumble" vintage Harley sound. What I object to is the high-pitched brrraPPP_PAP_PAP glass-pack snapping sound they are putting in the mufflers of some of the new ones.

Give me the gut rumble of a Harley over the boom boom boom of certain car stereos any day! You know the ones, where the damn thing is so loud the entire back end of the car vibrates..... At least Harleys look pretty (by the way, saw an amazing Yamaha Classic something, at Llanfair, apparently it's local and can be seen outside the chip shop every Friday - chrome on the chrome and a noise that makes Harleys sound like an angel's fart.....)these damn boom boxes are usually stuffed into the back of a Ford Fiesta or a manky old Escort....

We get them up and down our road, and you can hear the damn stereo before you hear the car! There is one that is so full of speakers, there is no back seat anymore, or boot (trunk), just speaker..... sheesh!

No sorry there, LeJ. I am with all of you on the deicble level of a what ever. Loud noises, of a certain pitch, do bother this "deaf" lady, and so do loud car stereos of things I do not want to listen to. But---

The "rumble" of a Harley is still distictive, and recognizable to an "afficiando" and I guess that is part of the "cult mystique?" Hell, I don't know, I don't ride at all, I just live with 2 guys who do.

Sorch,I'm a rider myself.Cut me and I bleed Yamaha.I have heard Harleys that were so goddam loud that it sounds like an explosion when they're started.I put those guys in the same class as the goofy teenager who blasts his obnoxious music through his car stereo because it's no fun unless everyone else gets to hear your music too.I know plenty of warm and friendly Harley folks, but I think the Biker Icon of the Hell's Angel encourages a lot of assholes and people who want to be assholes to buy Harleys, put on the colors, and lean on other people's sensibilities. Sorry.

Maybe we need to start a new thread called MudCat Motorcycles? And kendall, "Crotch Rockets" are obnoxious. They have a high pitched whine, sort of like a small chain saw. I admit Harleys are loud, but it is a deep, distinctive rumble that is not painful to either the ears or the gut. To some, it is actually soothing, and seems to be always "ignorable", IMHO. It certainly is not as painful to me as loud car stereos, or "crotch rockets" . Oh well. To each his own.

I am not a "rider" because I do not like the Wind In My Face, and I hate other people's loud noises too, but the rumble of a Harley on the highway really doesn't bother me.

kendall, biskit - didn't you know that Shakespeare can be ridden and a motorbike can be cited?

It's all the same: you can do it the loud way or you can do it the good way. Once you do it the good way you might hear people calling: "Louder, please!" In reverse ... well, there are few who dare to say "Better, please!", especially as this is an insult. Most people just get upset, without actually wanting to insult someone.

;-)

Praise - just sent an email to you. Sorry for being so late.

Hey, I didnt aim that at anyone in particular, but, you are right, I AM narrow minded in some ways. For instance, I believe I have a god given right to be able to listen to my TV or stereo with my widows and door open, without having them blasted into silence by some noise worshipping dude on a "Crotch Rocket" And a few years ago, I had one ripping back and forth by my house, so, I did confront him and asked why he had to make so much noise. As best I can determine from his limited IQ he thought it was fun..None of the neighbors did. Right now, he is doing 5 years for drugs.Ah.. blessed peace and quiet. Praise, there will be no fight.. just an old fart running his mouth! He's harmless..(And, if you believe that, you will also believe there will be a Richard Simmons Jr. too) Sorry Biskit, no personal insult intended.

RANT ON, PRAISE GETS A TURN TOO, DAMMIT.

Yeah, no problem. I'm gonna be on the Cat a lot less myself the next two weeks. Hope you check on me. I have a hard 3D job to wrap up. Pore me. I'm awful tired. Wouldn't take back a thing I've done in the last week, but time to pay the cost in rest and get that job DONE. I suppose I can always start sleeping during the funerals.

I was pretty worried about Matt there too.

RANT OFF.

Dear Brett. And all MudFriends.

Just wanted to let you know that I have exchanged several short e-mail messages with Matthew this weekend as he was engaged in an intense school project with an impossible deadline. My sense of it is that we may not see him around here for awhile, but you never know.

What I think was my clearest message to him tried to convey that I wish him well if he is moving on-- I think I said go go go, and go away from Mudcat if you must, but don't go away from the friends you made here, right? (Like myself.) Right? He answered affirmatively.

I still do not understand exactly what the last straw was. I've asked him if he and I have anything to clear up, and that's about all I feel responsible for. I can see there has been a last straw for a lot of you, too, over this, and I think from your own viewpooint you are more than completely justified.

And I didn't come into this thread now to speak for him. But to say to those of you who are his friends, not just fellow Cafe-denizens-- you do have his e-mail address, right? If not it is listed in Mudcat Resources, ya know. I am hoping that I did a good enough job at my end of being his freind that he will of course want to stay in touch. So I would just encourage you to look to what has been good about your own friendship with him, and start there in this new time.

We have two boys his age in the Navy who left like this but stayed in touch as much as they could once the real world kicked into their awarenesses. Now it's our daughter. Same thing. Well, it falls to the adults among his friends here to be adults, IMNSHO, as he starts acting like the really busy college kid he is.

Re: Harleys and Folk Music

Rant On!

I just came from the Portsmouth (NH) Sea Music Festival and have a new opinion of those damn machines. Admittedly the venues weren't great but the Harleys roaring past every 15 seconds or so certainly didn't help at all.

The love affair with loud engines offends me anyway as I sit here listening to the eternal ringing in my ears. The prevalent lack of consideration on the roads today is starting to wear down my generally benevolent outlook on life. If it isn't roaring engines then it's stereos throbbing the bass beat out into the atmosphere. Where and when will it stop. Do these people even have a clue that there are people out here who don't care to hear them?

Rant Off!

Avoiding totally the topic of Mbo, I ant to carry on the thread creep:

I am getting ready for a May 2001 trip from California to Connecticut and back on my bike, a well tested 1983 R-80RT from the wonderful folks at Bavarian Motorcycles. I've been looking at other bikes thinking that taking an 18 year old machine that I have put 80K miles on is risky but it is such a good bike. Twice I have had 1000 mile plus days. This is a real road eater.

Present plan is to have the engine "refreshed" and the bike painted and then do it. I do get some oil drops, three or four, after a yhard ride and it offends my aesthetic sensibilities and motorcycles are an aesthetic experience as well as other things.

I like getting the bike out in the world, putting it alongside other bikes (it looks great) and then seeing how many of those bikes it takes to add up to my motorcycle's total mileage. Yes, I have looked at the Harleys, Gold Wings and the new touring bikes including the Native American but I am pretty sure I am going to Go Deutsch on my Deutsch Treat.

SONG FOR MEEBO GONE

(sniff!)

He was a friend, and a friend always
Through his young heart's pain, and a young mind's haze;
He never cared, if you were high or low;
He'd send you words
To a song he'd know

So here's to you,
Young Meebo, m'boy
May all your rambling
Bring you joy.
Yes, here's to you
Don't stay too long away;
And we hope you find your self
Getting laid some day

Grow it long now, Mbo! and they will come!!
And DON'T FORGET THE HARLEY, BIG GUY!!!!!!!

Warmest regards,

A

Once when I was young a friend who was involved in peace movcement stuff with me phoned my home and asked my mother if I was there, and she said something about me not being there any more, and the lad, being of a melodranatic disposition, took it that I'd gone and died. So he was ringing round and organising a memorial service and so forth. Fortunately I ran into him before he'd got too far with it.

But if he had got a bit further, and there'd been people saying what a great fella I was and how they'd all miss me, I imagine it might have been a bit embarrassing for everyone, including me, if I turned up again.

So I'm wondering if Mbo might have just posted that Oasis song because he liked it, and was feeling like sharing it with us, and he never got round to adding in the explanatory bit, or left it out on purpose, as a jeu d'esprit, on the eve of going off for a break.

In which case how's he going to feel reading all this stuff? Especially the nice bits, anyone can shrug off insults, but sincere tributes are a bit harder. You know, I think if it was me, I'd get meself a new cookie and come in as a stranger.

Did they show Reginald Perrin on TV in America?

Hey Groucho.............bite me!!!! What the hell you doing, throwing research and appropriate dates on me when I am trying to wax poetic. I hate it when the facts get in the way of a good story. It just ain't the Irish way........hahahahahahaha..............it was meant as a rhetorical comment on the furor caused by Dylan leaving the "pure form". You are absolutely correct on Houston at that time, but I believe that I read in Joe Klein's that Gutherie and he had become disenchanted with Dylan early on over some of this stuff. I will have to go pull that out and find the timeframe. Interesting, your take on Geer. While it is true that he was never a singer on the level of the others, he was surely a singer. I believe he performed extensively in the Village. I will check that out and get back to you. In fact he apparently said that every time Gutherie stayed at his place he had to replace his Martin guitar as Woody would borrow it.

Anyway, Matt, ignore that picky prick Marxist and take the message for what it is worth.

Mick,

By the time Dylan went electric in 1965, Cisco Houston had been dead for four years and Woody Guthrie was into the final stages of his battle with Huntington's Disease (he died in 1967). I don't think it would have bothered Odetta because she did albums with electric backing in the '60s herself (she did a great version of "Strawberry Fields Forever"). As for Will Geer, he was an actor whose connection to folk music was primarily through friends like Woody and Cisco.

Do well, keep in touch, get regular xercise, practice every day, and don't forget to eat your vegetables. Oh,.......and watch your mouth young man. You are not to old for a whuppin'. LOL.

I like Matthew and if he is gone from Mudcat, I will miss him. But I actually am glad to see that he is moving on to "real" people. That is where he belongs. He owes a lot to some of the people here and the Matthew I know appreciates it. That applies to any of you who risked hurting his feelings or bringing down the wrath of the 'Cat by pulling him up short when he got out of line.
Kendall, the more Matt fights you, the more he shows his need to have your respect.
Jon, you're right. He crossed the line more than once. I remember a young man whose anger took the form of destroying instruments or tossing them in the sea. Matt needs to show it differently. Neither is appropriate. Please don't take this as criticism. I agree with your take on the "shite" crack - it was unnecessarily cruel. My point is that young men use anger against the things and people they love most.
Clinton, I would love to hear SandyToes' take on this. She's put up with a "touchy" artist for years.
Spaw, I believe you've got it right. Sometimes the only way a young man can walk away from security and take the next step is to turn on those he loves most and declare his independence. Mine came back three years later and was astonished to find his family waiting for him with open arms. Matt isn't gone for good.

This posting does not sound like the work of a sensitive, intelligent individual. It sounds bratty, whiney, self-centered and perhaps troubled. I think the earlier description of it as passive-aggressive behaviour seems suitable. He may have talent and I hope he grows up enough to use it with wit and empathy. But mostly I think he's still a puppy. Puppies can be cute and affectionate but they also need to be trained not to chew on the furniture or shit in the house. I have hopes that Mbo will turn into a decent dog and maybe the mixed bag of postings here will help.

I am amazed at the lack of compassion for this "child." I have witnessed his show of compassion for others more than a few times on this forum. Matthew came into the mudcat because of his love for music, our kind of music. So, he is much younger and his tastes have a more modern edge, he's exposed a few of us to good music that we, otherwise, might not have heard.

He has been flamed by people using aliases and even threatened personally, to the point that he was afraid to use his name on the forum. He has been treated meanly by some people and accused of "hogging" the microphone on HearMe. I've been on HearMe with him and never evidenced this. What I did see was him taking up slack when everyone else was trying to make up their minds whether or not to sing.

This young man is intelligent, and sensitive, and talented, and for adults to treat him like this is a sin.

So Guest, lone haranguer and Guest,Rose ... train your little insect antennae on someone else. Please feel free to flame me ...

Matt has some growing up to do but then most of us did at that age. I joined the Navy at 18 and got to see the world and experience people up close and personal. At his age while riding the grey funnel line I toured Plymouth, Edinburgh, Bergen, Amsterdam, and Bremerhaven. He needs to do something similar. Hopefully he's doing that right now.

Whatever he's doing I, for one, wish him well. Sure he's touchy and short tempered, a little self centered. But how many of you could face the man with a rock in your hand? (i.e., let he who is without sin cast the first stone.) So far I have described almost any other human being. We all fit that description to some degree.

You have to remember all the posts where people have described him as being bighearted and kind. Think of the things he has said that made you think and feel. Please don't focus only on those parts of Matt that pissed you off.

Troll, you are right. People come and people go. If Matt is done with us then he is gone. I'd like him to think he can come back any time and be welcome.

Jon, you have a right to your opinion and have clearly stated it. But is your opinion going to change any of us and our opinions?

We are only humans. We cannot please everyone all the time. If we restrict ourselves to only saying the things that we know will not rile other people we are betraying ourselves and the people around us. The difference between us old codgers and Matt and his generation is that we are old enough to know how to do that gently. They still have to learn that lesson. Running up against our more short tempered members is hopefully teaching them that lesson.

I think you are right, Spaw. It is also hard for a kid to say goodbye sometimes, so they will pick a fight, piss everyone off, then leave in a huff.

As I am sure some would welcome Gargoyle back and as Michael K. has come back, I would hope we would be open to Mbo's return, too. Nothing he has ever done, no matter how obnoxious, holds a candle to some of their past antics.

Reminds me of the time I transcribed the M*A*S*H theme song...

The game of life is hard to play
I'm bound to lose it any way
Some day the losing dice I'll play
And this is all I have to say

Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I try

I inadvertantly left this on the kitchen table, and my Mom found it and was in panic thinking I'd left it as a suicide note. She was relieved to find me asleep in my room and told me in the morning "I'd have hated it if you'd killed yourself, especially leavin' a crappy note like that behind."

Kendall, festival info is in the What's On thread. The festival has a web page, with an event schedule.

About Mbo, if he's gone, I sincerely hope he's found something he likes better. He hasn't seemed happy here for a while, judging by his comments about the sucky nature of folk music and folkies, and I think he only hung around as long as he did because he made some friends here. He was cut a huge amount of slack when he said those things. I honestly hope he's found something closer to what he wants, and I hope he stays in touch with the friends he's made here.

Oh ferchristsake.

this isn't the first time Mbo has checked out and it may very well not be the last. not the first temper tamtrum throw here, definately won't be the last. not the first passive aggressive attempt at sucking other folks in (poor "misunderstood" guy). that has happened on a regular basis and is getting fairly boring.

Jon F. caught on a long time ago.

say whatcha mean - mean whatcha say.

If he's gone, he's gone. If not ,not. People come and people go. Some do it with grace and style and some like spoiled children and some simply disappear for no apparent reason.
The sun will come up in the morning regardless of what we do, so why not just accept what is. If I can't change it, I don't worry about it.

Hey Gang......We have all, especially me and a few others, been pushing hard on him to get the hell out into the 3D world. Finally, thanks to a CYS group at college and a Father Tom, he has gone on a few outtings and had a few nights with a group his own age who like much of what he likes and appreciate his talent. When we found out we encouraged it and many expressed how happy we were to see him experience real 3D life. If he's leaving completely or for awhile, this method is very natural.

First, its natural to rebel and I'm glad he has that piece of normalcy in him. Then there is the same thing we saw with a lot of our foster kids. When it was time (for whatever reason) to move on, be it back home or on their own as adults,a strange thing occurred almost everytime and Karen and I came to expect it and even use it. It is more apt to happen when the person is insecure and the move to something else is a bit (or a lot) scary. They could not admit it was scary or that they feared the unknown....the future had to be GREAT!!! How do you make the unknown future great? Very simple....You make the present out to be the absolute PITS!!! Then the future is much brighter. I watched it happen repeatedly.

Matt may still not understand that we didn't hate his music and that some of us are rock fans too....There is much he still does not understand. But he is out learning, spreading his wings......and if he has the crash or two, he needs to know that no matter what we are here. We all need to understand where he's coming from at this point.....and he is still socially a novice and has much emotional growth to go.

Spaw

The original post is a (partial) set of lyrics by Oasis. I'm not sure why Matt posted them, but he's taken a lot of flak from others here at various times, so why not cut him a bit of slack?

I don't know, davecoje. If I am reading this correctly, I think I am angry, and that my feelings are hurt, but I am withholding judgement for a few days. I, like Jon, dislike having my music called "shite" from someone I thought was a friend. I can't help but wonder just what is going on here.

I hope, that as kendall says, he is just being theatrical. I shudder to think--just what is he saying "goodbye" to? I must say, I am a little concerned.

Mbo, I assume you are being serious here and at the risk of the wrath of other 'catters, I will be too.

I find your words offensive. I think that a number of people have bent over backwards to help you and in their own ways have tried to offer their hand of frienship to you.

I don't know what others have put up with but my latest reward from you has been to be more or less completely ignored by you in Hearme and I remember a recent night where you didn't even manage the common courtesy to say hello to anyone because you were in one of your sulks.

I try to understand you but you have to face up to the fact that the world does not revolve around "MEEEEEEEEbo". Please just grow up, get a life and join in with those of us who try to welcome you even if our view points may be different. We all have those differences and most of us can agree to disagree and still stay friends.

Jon ( who is only posting here rather than PM because of Mbo's "I think your music's shite...")

There's no need for you to say you're sorry
Goodbye, I'm going home
I don't care no more, so don't you worry
Goodbye, I'm going home
I hate the way that even though you know you're wrong
You say you're right
I hate the books you read and all your friends
Your music's shite--
It keeps me up all night

There's no need for you to say you're sorry
Goodbye, I'm going home
I don't care no more, so don't you worry
Goodbye I'm going home
I hate the way that you are so sarcastic
And you're not very bright
You think that everything you've done's fantastic
Your music's shite--
It keeps me up all night

There's no need for you to say you're sorry
Goodbye, I'm going home
I don't care no more, so don't you worry
Goodbye
I'm going
