From: GUEST,Richie

Thats right. Who gives a d***?

A garage advertises "We care about your car!" A bank "We care about your future!" Your doctor "cares about your health!"

HA! They care about your money and how they can get it from you!

Who really cares in this world?

I have dropped into the Mudcat Cafe off and on for a couple of years. I have never posted before. I see smart-asses, philosophers, nice people, red-necks and liberals; all killing time on this forum. Why? Why do I see the same people over and over here? I think I know why. It diverts you from the reality of this miserable selfish world we are trapped in.

I can predict your various responses. Maybe Praise, Gospelpicker or Khandu will point me upwards to a God that sent his Son. But what real relevance is that to me in this blood and guts world? I am sickened of pie in the sky thoelogy.

Uncle Jaques, what wisdeom do you offer? M'bo, what about you? Kendall, you got any REAL answers?

This is a sick place and it makes me old and sick just trying to survive in it. But who the hell REALLY cares. We are all just trying to get through it however we may.

But why pretend on the way to who knows where? If we do not really care, let's just say so.

Thought I'd have my say, but who cares?

Richie

Ritchie,
As was asked up above, what do you want from us? If you posted here anything from "I can't play this one ornament no matter how many hours I practice", to "I can't get along with my neighbors", to "I just found out I have colon cancer", to "I had to put my dog to sleep today"; a lot of people would give a damn, and what's more, chances are, somebody here would have some practical experience to share. It's clear you just want make sure nobody else is happy if you can't be. Sorrow shared is sorrow lessened but sorrow inflicted is sorrow heightened. You can call this "not giving a damn", but I'm gonna let this one die after this post and I would encourage everyone here to do the same.

Rich

Subject: RE: Who Gives A D***
From: flattop

The question reminds me a note I took from a songwriting book, by Chappel of Chappel publishing, I believe:

Who Cares

Who cares? The publisher? He hears thousands of songs. What's going to make him care enough about your work to publish it? Is your song commercial enough for him to possibly get it recorded, and thereby, make money for both of you? Does it fit his particular catalog? You wouldn't take a country song to a publishing company that publishes pop or rock, would you?

Who cares? The producer? The entire recording session which your song is on is the producer's personal project. He has to care enough to invest, sometimes thousands of dollars, in recording costs which include musicians, studio, engineer, mix down and final distribution. Therefore he has to feel that your song is hit material and will appeal to the larger portion of the record buying public; he also has to decide whether or not it's the type of material his artist can perform. If he likes your song, he'll have the artist listen to it.

Who cares? The artist? When the artist hears a song, he has to be able to relate to it emotionally so that he can interpret the lyrics and, thereby, care enough to cut it. He, too, is looking for a song which will be a hit and one that he feels will appeal to his fans. If your song was a country ballad, you certainly wouldn't take it to a rock'n'roll artist because he couldn't relate to it and, therefore, wouldn't care about recording it.

Who cares? The record company? They are in business to make money so they promote artists and songs which they believe will sell records. Do they feel that your song is a potential hit which would, therefore, make them care enough to record it and spend the necessary money promoting it?

Who cares? The program director? The disc jockey? ... The disc jockey will care enough about his job to play whatever the program director has scheduled for air play. But it doesn't hurt if he cares enough about your song to say nice things about it on the air for the public to hear, does it?

Who cares? The public? ... What sector will care about it when they hear it? The pop field? The country field? The rock field? And when they hear it on radio, television or at concerts, will they care enough to get in their cars, drive to their local record store, walk in and lay down their hard-earned bucks for a tape cassette, CD or home video?

It all boils down to a well written song. Be very selective of a song title, have a title so original and intriguing that it causes potential listeners to unconsciously say, "I want to hear it."

After the title has caught their attention, you've got to hook them with the song's theme, its lyrics and its music so they care enough to include this song in their own musical collection.

Who cares? The question goes right to the heart of the matter, so always keep it in the forefront of your mind when choosing a concept or theme for your song. It's the bottom line.

Growing up, I really hated my father's homespun "wisdom," but the older I get, the truer much of it seems. He always said, "You get out of it what you put into it." He was generally referring to his service in the U. S. Army during the second world war. However, this seems increasingly apparent in my own life, whether it's music, raising a son or taking part in this discussion forum. think about it.

What did, however, cheer me up about the thread was the comment from Wyo Woman that she occasionally gives a F*** what a nice thought ( the perfect birthday present from me to you ).

There is at present a court case going on about a "famous footballer" who can't be named because of legal reasons, of whom it has been stated had 'phone sex' with someone who consequently tried to blackmailed him. We were intrigued to find out who it was and then I thought 'but who gives a damn' Well I now know who it is and you don't so there !!!

An old proverb states that they who dance are thought mad by those who do not hear the music. We hear the music. We can dance with the Cosmos. I keep giving a damn so I can sing along, and tap my toes...

Richie - Every good folksinger I ever knew gave a damn. One can be "rich" in things yet poor in spirit, and I see a lot of that, but I do not see a world bereft of hope and positive potential. What I generally see on Mudcat encourages me tremendously. I see plenty of evidence here of people who care, and have high ideals, and sometimes a great sense of humour as well.

Most of the people I've ever known care.

For all you know, you may yourself be the "son that God has sent". I believe that each one of us is that person, son and/or daughter, in the making. That could be why it says "Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven which is within, and unto you will be added all things. One does not technically have to be a "christian" (in the usual sense of the word) to have that awareness.

You are not the victim of the world you see, but the victim of the way you see the world. In times when I was down, I saw a world of hurt. When my mood brightened I saw a world of beauty and abundance. The world had not changed, but I had. The power is yours to be whatever you desire. If you want to be cynical and miserable, the universe is perfectly willing to let you be just that until you get heartily sick of it. That's what I call perfect freedom to be whatever you please.

I just spent a whole weekend in the presence of 48 people doing sacred dancing, and they obviously do care...tremendously. I could just as well have spent the weekend in the Middle East, throwing rocks and shooting at my brothers in arms...but that was not my choice.

You pick your reality. Don't complain to us if you don't like it.

So well said and as I'm not likely to make Orillia anytime soon here's a *hug!* He may have been just trying to get a rise but there are so many people who do care, and we have chosen realities where our caring makes a difference! And by and large we are not wasting time here, but spending a few moments (or maybe many) out of busy days spent caring about what we do, what others do, and what we are, AND our music. I for one can hardly wait for the NH Mudcats' party so I can finally MEET some of these people!

Actually I do have something to say.

It is possible to come up with "ulterior motives" which could explain how anybody who SEEMS to care, really is only in it for what he/she can get out of it.

Possible to think up, but completely impossible to prove.

At some point, it requires faith in your friends that they really do care about you and aren't just using you. The longer they treat you in a caring way, the more likely it will be that they really care and aren't just waiting for the right moment to cash in their chips and leave you in the ditch. But it never becomes 100% certain.

That's part of being human. If you let down your defences, some will take advantage of you. But some won't. If you never open your heart to another, then you will never be disappointed. But you will never be happy, or fully human.

Just some random thoughts on a rainy Monday morning.

Thanks to Little Hawk for your eloquence. I would add that I often find it useful, when I catch myself in the illusion of despair, to remember that there is tremendous power in "behaving as if..." - power for good or ill. That knowledge reminds me that I have the choice to change my behavior.

I prayed and cried and prayed some more... Let me tell you, I have been imprisoned, I have been shot, I have been told I was going to go blind... I kicked a 15 year, FOUR PACK A DAY CIGARETTE HABIT!! All this with faith in "some pie in the sky theology" that you hate? Come now, don't give me any of this lame crybaby lack-of-faith garbage... I deal REAL suffering every time I step into a hospice for chronic, critically ill patients dying of cancer, emphysema, lukemia, AIDS... they can find faith in God that has NOTHING to do with baked goods and the atmosphere... what have YOU suffered today that equals what Jesus suffered? Even if He was not the Incarnate Son of God, He suffered on that cross with pain you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy... try asking what God has done for people with faith in Him before you go condemning the whole idea...

For someone who's only dropped in a couple of times over the last few years, he's awfully good on the names of ppl... Ah well, let's fall for the Troll anyway (capital T in case the little-t troll takes offence :-)

Businesses may just want the money, cos they'll often see products and consumers, not ppl. But folks here are doing it bcos they want to do it, even though there's no money in it. Maybe some are doing it for kudos (that's one payback in ESR's noosphere theory), but I'd hope more are doing it for the love of the music. Max, Dick and Jim don't get much out of running the Mudcat, but if they didn't do it then a whole herd of ppl would be SOL when it came to learning music and useful advice on playing instruments.

What's in it for them? The feeling of a job well done. I'm a raw beginner compared to almost everyone here, but I've got some experience in electronics and help out on a beginner's message board or two for that. Why? bcos I can, and some other folk can't (or don't, or won't). Kendall, McGrath and others have helped me with dumb questions on music; I help other folks with dumb questions on electronics; and so it goes on. What's the point of a world-wide communications system if we don't use it to communicate? If the whole purpose of it is just to deliver spam emails, p0rn and cracked programs, we may as well all pack up and go home now.

And why do you see the same ppl over and over? Look up the term "community", and think on...

Grab.

Grab,

Much as it pains me to do so, I have to support Troll in his assertion that he is not responsible for starting this. My justification for this is twofold and based on personal knowledge:

1. That he has too much of a sense of pride (or narcissism) to post under a nom de ??post. 2. That the opening post was much to restrained and literate for him. I have heard him on this subject. The tone of the first post is .....rational. Comparatively.

There is no reason why you should believe me, anymore than you did him. Still, trust, even in a virtual community, is what holds it together. There have been, are and will be plenty of issues to take exception with Troll on. I wish this was one of them.

Concurrence on your criticism of the uses internet. For a structure that hold such promise, the ability to trivialize it is sad, no matter how understandable and human such use might be. It can be a great tool to help others.

And finally, it wasn't me, either. As an occasional cynic, the fact that people don't give a d*** is a given, and evidence of same confirms my opinion of mankind. (As a skeptic, I'm compelled to take the opposite view. Makes for great arguments with myself. And I always win, one way or the other)

Sorry, I'm feeling foolish this afternoon.

Regards John

Hi Margo. Just got in from 10 hours straight, driving back from my little tour in New England, and started thumbing through the threads of the last four days. I guess it was negative psychic energy that drove me to this one....and what do ya know? It's a hoot!

I TOO thought it might have been an old one of mine, trying to suck as many folks as possible into a discussion of "D inversions"!

It's MUCH better than that though!

Rick

Grab...No offense taken.
Skeptic...Thats troll with a lower-case (small) "t". Thanks for the defense;nice but unnecessary. As for the rationality and literacy of the post as compared to what I might come up with...Well, lets just say that to see you, of all people, discoursing on rationality and literacy is mildly amusing.

troll (small "t")

John, troll: It was a response to the "troll" who initiated the thread, but having someone actually called troll in here confuses things! Hence the capital-T Troll to denote the thread-starter, as against the lower-t troll who's not the troll who's trolling by starting this thread. Confused yet? ;-)

Grab.
