I'm sorry I couldn't make it back today Bron, but I want to be the first on the forum to say thanks for getting the event together. All the Bishops Castle regulars had a great time last night, and you're right, what a lot of talent (especially female singers in my humble opinion). I've got to get the lyrics to the alternative 'Streets of Laredo', ditto and chords to 'Vincent 52' (I used to have one - they don't have keys!). Hope you have/had a blast tonight, and thanks again. Trevor (and Jackie, Keith, Terry, Jude, Glynn, Ann and Chris - yes they were all there on Friday.) PS Come to BC on Friday 27th and I'll buy you and Jim a pint of Big Nev's - each! |

The singing in the bar was great ... but it was even better in the Women's Loos. Great accoustics! Hope Bill got over his stage fright (honest! but only in terms of his debut as a Caller for Sat. night. ) I await a full report of how the second night went! Again thanks to Bron. but also to all the Landladies concerned. Looking forward to Bill's charter flight in 2006 ... 300 'Catters to America eh? Where'll we all stay??? As Sam commented, the Ceilidh rocked! Sam and the band were mostly responsible for that - we were all knackered after a very lively Drops of Brandy! Those not at the Ceilidh were in the Red Lion, raising the roof - we joined them, carrying on the noise until around 1:30am... Some people (mad fools!) continued until very late (early?) in the infamous caravan, but I'll let them confess... After a late breakfast, festivities continued in the Red Lion, until people started drifting off mid afternoon, and I was one of the last to leave around 4:00pm. The photographs will convey more than mere words - I'm going to log off shortly, and work on the large collection I have!! Thanks, Bron (and everyone else!) - brilliant idea, well organised and 'executed'!! Let's do it again next week!!!

Though the hours were long and the mixture of people dwindled to a smaller group of harmonious but well intened singers, with the occaisional steady guitar piece thrown in,the evening passed without incident or over the top merriment. As Saturday approached and the sun began to shine, the visitors silently walked the length and breadth of the village lost in their own thoughts. A small audience gathered at the village institute and sang a round or two, followed by some psalms for the more laid back. The evening passed quietly with a small group of musicains playing melencholy tunes for a seated and respectable group of visitors and local people from the village who had come to laug*** (Sorry) Marvel at the spectacle. After the odd waltz, the crowd returned to the local pub inorder to rest their voices and obtain some light refreshment, which included bisciuts and fruit juice. There, they quietly sang some music of solemn resolution and resolved that as the hour was approaching ten thirty at night, an early bed would help to offset the rigours of the day. On Sunday, all bright and early like young spring chickens on a May day,all awoke with a feeling of joy in their hearts. Then after pleasant conversation and fond farewells, they left as quietly as they had come, leaving only a memory. Bye. It was a gentle and relaxing weekend. Eric. |

I arived late having overslept, etc got to Welshpool expecting to taxi into Llanfiar Cerinion and found someone (Bron and sister) shouting me as the had worked the train timetables out and wanted to save me that journey. I got to the do and I was made to feel more welcome than I could belive possible... had a great lunchtime today and was driven back to Chester to help me with trian times by Noreen and Catrin (they left me and then came back and joined me for a drink on the station). In the middle of it all, I met a delghtful Micca, a wonderful Bill Sables, Bron and Jim were the perfect hosts, then there was Eric the Viking, Sam Pirt, the lovely Patrish ( I had a very enjoyable conversation with her), King Brilliant, Bernard, Terry K, Morticia, Liz the Squeak, etc. I know I am not talking about the music but I simply could not get over how nice the people were and I guess if I have a memory from this on, it was the parting hugs and kisses. Sorry to ramble on but that was how it was to me - my memory is the people... Jon |

I'm finding it hard to read this thread, and certainly not up to posting anything coherent. Not because of alcohol poisoning, but because my brain is so full of all the wonderful experiences of the weekend, it's close to overflowing. I'm not alone in this, judging by the earlier contributions to this thread (and spillover into other threads!) Sorry, other 'catters, for the lack of gory details- more will be forthcoming when I've got my thoughts in order. You were not forgotten amidst the celebrations. We were very aware that the Llanstock contingent is just a part of the whole Mudcat family, and many photographs were taken, to share the weekend with you. I don't know what I enjoyed most, the company, the music, the singing or the countryside - all of it is fantastic, and is being immortalised as soon as I can think of a suitable rhyme for side, bank or flows, that has nothing to do with weddings, masturbation or snows..... I have to thank everyone for making the FIRST mudcat UK gathering such a resounding success. I can't shake off the impression that the people whom I have spent the weekend with are old friends that I've known for years. We all were able to pick up conversations and discussions that we were all a part of, and talk about absent friends, affectionately, as though they hadn't been able to be with us, but were not far away, and would be here next time we met. We are all in agreement that the music was first-class, even in the middle of the night, when the traditionalists were singing a cappella in the lounge bar, and the folk rockers were strutting their stuff in the public bar. Now, 'Spaw, the questions you need to be asking are about the forty-foot trailer, the stone circle and it's significance during the full moon, and the legend of Taliesin. If you can get straight answers about these, then you will have a small understanding of the event that was Llanstock. Love, Bron. |

Well, what can I say, from the moment we walked into the Red Lion on Friday afternnon and met Bron, Bill Sables Patrish and Sam Pirt, until the moment we walked out of the Red Lion this afternoon at, co-incidentally, almost exactly the same time to come home, it is just a kaleidoscope of images sounds and impressions. It has been said that it was like re-meeting friends after a short break, is SO TRUE.. there was no moment of hesitation, we KNEW each other straight away, the intros, were, necessary to fix names only, We knew each other already Some of the highlights; Sam Pirts "show off piece" on the melodeon; Bill Sables Bron is TALL; the finest Scratch Celeidh band ever collected; the wonderful singing of everyone; Daleks playing and singing; and the Blues player;,who played and sang late Friday night!!!!! Bron singing and playing and Jim her SO playing Bass a lot..The Moment when Catrin realised how KingBrilliants name came about; Jon Freemans arrival like the Demon King wet and bedraggled out of the night clutching a banjo case and a camera; Sian west wales WONDERFUL cake and Cookiesand the beer was BEAUTIFUL…and all the people..…,.. and the terrible shock of meeting Bernard, who looks enough like me to be a blood relation and we know a lot of the same songs!!! SPOOKY, I will draw a veil over the reported events in the caravan as I was not present and anything I say would be hearsay and Gossip. Bron very craftily drafted me to be moderator in the singaround in the pub and in the hall to marshall the singing order and that materially contributed to me being less drunk then I might otherwise have achieved: Thus contributing to my general health and wellbeing in one fell swoop. My sincere thanks to Bron and the locals at Llanfair Caereinon, to Buff, the landlady of the Red Lion for a truly memorable weekend. I have provisionally booked my room for next October. |

I've been to pubs where a session broke out and you may talk to one or two people but are not necessarily part of the crowd (especially as a non-player/singer). And I went to Llanstock. Micca said it entirely, that we were all instant mates. I really felt that I knew everyone, that I could talk to anyone at all. And Jon said it too, the parting hugs and kisses, the memories are of the people. I'd only met one the group before (Bill) and I find it amazing how this Mudcat bond works. Oh and the music. These people are so talented, so enthusiastic. I don't think you could have stage-managed an event more pleasurable, more diverse - full of little pearls of natural music. I'm overwhelmed really. And I have digital video footage including, wait for it Bron ............ you doing Tarriers which is NOT ON the official video!! And I promise I won't say how much I enjoyed the nights, curled up in Bron's duvet. Thanks to all for everything. Cheers, Terry |

I will admit that I was very apprehensive about going to this do as I was worried about meeting all these people for the first time. I had chatted to several on Hearme but meeting in real life is different. My fears dissappeared straight away and I can honestly say that I have never met a more friendly group of people. I just wish it didn't have to end - sort of reminded me of the times when I used to go over to Dublin and when the time came to catch the boat, I just wished someone would kidnap me... I don't know about others but I suspect that it is going to take me a few days to get back to reality after this do. I remeber Alice commenting on the climbig down after meeting 'catters earier this year. I'm feeling a little that way at the moment - oh well, there is always next year... Jon |

Noreen, glad that the cake was consumed! The cookies were a recipe from Mudcat ... one of Caitrin's, but I can't seem to find it so here they are as originally posted, with some notes from me at the end...
Caitrin's Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350. In one bowl, beat eggs until frothy. Pour into large mixing bowl. Really large. This makes a lot of batter. Add softened butter to eggs. Add sugars and vanilla and mix to combine. Add 1/4 cup of Kahlua and mix in well. Now measure out the six cups of flour, Sifting each cup into a yet another bowl as you measure. Once all six cups are measured and sifted, add salt, baking soda, and baking powder. Mix well with a fork or whisk. Now add the dry ingredients slowly (about one cup at a time) to the egg mixture. Periodically mix in the remaining 1/4 cup of Kahlua. Once batter is done, fold chocolate chips and nuts into mixture. (Be sure to use a sturdy spoon...a friend of mine broke the handle off of a wooden spoon in this batter!)
Line a cookie sheet with wax paper and use an ice cream scoop to drop batter onto paper. (I can usually fit about 6 cookies on a cookie sheet.) Bake the cookies for 15 minutes and let them cool for at least 5 before attempting to move them. Makes about 50 cookies. Sian's notes: as I was going to test these on my P.A. at work and she's allergic to walnuts, I had a brilliant idea to use hazelnuts instead. I shall think twice about that next time: little b*gg*rs shoot off all directions when yer tryin' to chop 'em. Also, as we don't have any outstanding chocolate chips on this side of the Atlantic, I chopped up Bourneville chocolate bars (semi-sweet dark choc. for you guys Over There). Basically it took me a whole evening just to get the stuff chopped and ready! But, OK, seriously worthwhile in the end. And Caitrin is NOT lying when she says it makes A LOT! The mark of a good organiser is that it flowed naturally & everyone had a great time. So that's you lumbered with the job forever then! And thanks for the offer of accomodation. If only we'd taken you up on it we might never have had to enter the ... the ... trailer ... of .... of .... doom. Just got into work - but for once I was looking forward to it so that I could read the threads. It was a wonderful weekend & just proved that Mudcat is a huge extended family. Everyone were instant mates & such a lovely bunch of individual eccentrics. Micca & Bernard are indeed spookily similar (as you will see in the photos) - but I don't think Micca dances quite so well!! Amoret was EXTREMELY impressed with your dancing Bernard. One of the biggest surprises of the weekend was that Micca is a man & Patrish & I are women (OK - I knew about me, but lots of people didn't). Liz the Squeak - yes it does become obvious how you got your name - infectious or what!!! I owe un undying debt of gratitude to Patrish for letting us have her room (and making her sleep in with the three men!!) Of course, had we not taken the room 'that incident' need never have happened. But my lips are sealed & I'll not tell anyone what I know...... I do however know what was concealed in the melodeon case (not the melodeon) - I can confirm that it suited Mark very well & he shook it quite nicely actually. I knew he had a talent somewhere. Catrin had me in fits of laughter when she showed Linda what 'being pissed at someone' would mean to the English. I was in danger of loosing control on the way back to the trailer on Sat night, the conversation went like this: Amoret: "There's going to be some people coming back, and we're going to carry on in the trailer" Me : "Oh, we can't be too noisy though, because people are trying to sleep " (that's the responsible mother bit) Amoret: "No, its OK. Skipjack is thinking of doing something quiet and instrumental" Me (choking) : "Amoret, he's an ACCORDIANIST!". It was that night that I heard the sheep bleating up on the hills as I made my way to the secret discrete toilet (I didn't dare use the trailer toilet after what it did to Catrin!). Eric was out there, up on the hills, pillaging the sheep. Enticing them with his wellies. Were they pretty sheep? Did you care, Eric? Did you respect them in the morning? They spoke very highly of you.... I've got loads more to say, but I have to get on & do some work now (grrrr). Mark & Amoret are eagerly awaiting printouts tonight. Thanks everyone for being such great people, and especially for being so accepting of Amoret the MudKitten. She's got her confidence back for singing (it had been trampled by an unfortunate encounter with a school microphone) - and did indeed 'ditch the partner' on Saturday night & sing solo. Now she's eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Uke Banjo which we will be buying from Bill. She was unconvinced by the fiddler idea, Bill - but then give it 7 years or so.... Sorry I didn't do the all-round-the-room hugs thing - but I'm not by nature a big hugger & goodbyes get me all flustered anyway. Its the thought that counts, and I was thinking a big all-encompassing hug. See-ya Kris
