Subject: Thought for the day - October 15, 2000 From: katlaughing Date: 15 Oct 00 - 12:34 AM This seems to be quite appropriate for the Mudcat: I seek when I can the company of others who learn, for who knows when my knowledge combined with theirs might prove the answer? Each man learns a little, but the sum of their knowledge can be great.

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - October 15, 2000 From: Ebbie Date: 15 Oct 00 - 12:43 AM Good thought, kat. I'm in awe of how true this is in the mudcat community. If a Mudcat site could be set up and utilized by everyone around the world, just think of the cumulative effect! Ebbie |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - October 15, 2000 From: katlaughing Date: 15 Oct 00 - 09:28 AM LOL, not much RogerinS. Actually, the library is shrinking each move that we make and the spiders have all fled, but I do have many of my favourite books to hand, here in my lair, oops, I mean office. I like your image better, though, so let's go with it! Ebbie, thanks. I agree it would be good for the world. kat |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - October 15, 2000 From: Naemanson Date: 15 Oct 00 - 09:35 AM Sharing knowledge is only one step. There is also the sharing of respect and honoring one another for what they bring to the discussion. And when all of that is in place we can share the love we feel for each other as intended in all the great religions. Love one another is the final step. Thanks for today's thought Kat. My image is a great Victorian library with a cheerful fire, bookshelves, family portraits, and brandy on the side board. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - October 15, 2000 From: Midchuck Date: 15 Oct 00 - 10:20 AM I attach as much importance to the fact that you took a quote from Louis L'Amour as to the quote itself. One of the great storytellers of our century, and our "intellectuals" and "literary people" would scream and faint at a redneck being allowed in their midst if you admit to liking his stuff. Peter. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - October 15, 2000 From: katlaughing Date: 15 Oct 00 - 11:30 PM Yeah, Midchuck, except around here. No one on the Mudcat has called me a redneck for liking him.**BG** I haven't read any of his westerns in about 30 years, but Walking Drum remains one of my all-time favourite books and I am about due to re-read it, I think. Do you have the book his daughter compiled? It was done just before he died, with a foreward by him: A Trail of Memories: The Quotations of Louis L'Amour. I would love to see his home and library. It is in one of my favourite parts of Colorado, where I grew up and the way he describes it makes it sound glorious, esp. his library. His daughter includes this quote, from The Lonesome Gods, in the introduction of that book: "You've heard him talk. He's got a way about him, a way with words. He can make the temple bells tinkle for you, and you can just hear them big old elephants shuff-shuffling along, the priests callin' folks to prayer and the like." Sounds as though he was describing himself, doesn't it? Thanks, kat |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - October 15, 2000 From: LR Mole Date: 16 Oct 00 - 02:41 PM One of my favorite quotes from him: "He had the Irishman's love of fine-sounding words and the Irishman's aptitude for rebellion." I'm not even sure what book it's from but I had the quote on my wall for years. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - October 15, 2000 From: Bert Date: 16 Oct 00 - 02:51 PM the library is shrinking??? Just HOW do you manage to do that? We have a moratorium on buying books. But everytime we go to Goodwill we buy more. Tree says 'NO BOOKS' and often comes away with more than I do. Bert. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - October 15, 2000 From: katlaughing Date: 16 Oct 00 - 03:07 PM Well, for one, Bert, the pickin's are slimmer here; although one way I've managed to keep from doing too many is to stay away from the library sale!! It took a lot of discipline and moving one too many times. This next move needs to be the easiest for us both; that translates to lightening the load! I still have all of the old hardback precious ones, will always have them, just not adding to the pile as much. When I buy something contemporary, I generally pass it on or trade it in at the used bookstore. I know it seems odd to me and I suppose if we ever figure out just where we want to sink in some roots I will probably add a few more gems. LR Mole, that's a good one. The book I mentioned above doesn't have an index; but if I come across that quote in it, I'll post the book it is out of. Naes, that's my dream library! Even the brandy, even though I never touch the stuff...just for guests ya know?! kat |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - October 15, 2000 From: Peter T. Date: 16 Oct 00 - 03:21 PM Curious person. I enjoyed his memoirs of his Jack London like life, and thought that I would give his novels a try. Did nothing for me. Compared to Larry McMurtry for instance. yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - October 15, 2000 From: katlaughing Date: 16 Oct 00 - 03:36 PM Arrrgghhhh...Peter! I don't know how L'Amour would read for me now, but I tried Larry McMurtry and couldn't stand him! If you haven't read The Walking Drum you really should give it a try, IMO. |
