The Ten Commandments of Jamming

I Thou shalt not ever forsake the beat.

II Thou shalt arrange thyselves in a small circle so that thou mayest hear and see the other musicians. Thou shalt listen with thine ears to the songs and attempt to play in accord with the group; also, open thine eyes betimes to look about thee, lest there br some visual sign someone is endeavoring to send thee. Thou shalt play softly when someone lifteth his voice in song, when playing harmony, and when thou knowest not what thou is doing.

III Thou shalt play in tune. Tune thine instument well, and tune it often with thine electric tuner, lest the sounds emanating from thine instrument be unclean.

IV Thou shalt commence and cease playing each tune together as one, so that the noise ye make be a joyful noise, and is an abomination. Whensoever a musician sticketh forth his foot as though he were afflicted with a cramp in the fatted calf, thou must complete the rest of that verse, and then cease.

V Thou shalt stick out thine own foot or else lift up thy voice crying "This is it !", or "Last time !" if thou hast been the one to begin the song, and it has been played sufficient times over. If the one who began a tune endeth it not by one of these signs, then the tune will just go on and on, like the Old Testament, until the listeners say,"Hark ! It all soundeth the same."

VI Thou shalt concentrate and thou shalt not confound the music by mixing up the A part and the B part. Most songs, but not all, proceedeth according to the ancient law "AABB". But if thou sinneth in this regard, or make any mistake that is unclean, thou may atone not by ceasing to play - but by reentering the tune in the proper place and playing on.

VII Thou shalt be ever mindful of the key the banjo is tuned in, and play many tunes in that key, For the banjo is but a lowly instrument, which must needs be retuned each time there is a key change.

VIII Thou shalt not speed up or slow down accidentally when playing a tune, for it is an abomination. (see commandment I)

IX Thou shalt not, by thine own self, commence noodling off on a tune the other musicians know not, unless asked or unless thou art teaching that tune, for it is an abomination, and the other musicians will not hold thee guiltless, and shall take thee off their computer lists, yea, even unto the third and the fourth generation.

Chapter 3, vs 17-18 Book of khanduikus:

Thou shalt not come to the jammeth session to impresseth others witheth thine amazing talents for this also is an abomination. The song shalt be the center aroundeth which all musicians shall rotateth, not viceth-versaeth.

To each star shall be given the chance to shine; no one star shall hoggeth the session, lest he be cast down. Hogging is an abomination and pisseth off the many.

Thou shalt name thy tune aforehand, and callest the key--

Thou shalt call the soloists in turn, leaving none out--

Whenest some one is hot, give another shot, when not, move to the next spot--

Use plenty of pectin. Remove the seeds as best possible. Don't overdo the sugar, let the natural flavor come through. Don't undercook or overcook-both affect taste and consistency. Riper fruit has a stronger flavor, avoid unripened fruit. Be sure you get a good seal on your jars. Try to avoid mixed fruit combinations because the flavor and consistency are both compromised. Store in a cool place. Refrigerate after opening.

Thou shalt resist the temptation to pull the plug on the guy with the Les Paul, amp and effects box.

I kid you not, this happened yesterday. I found it is not really possible to add much with one's banjo to 'Purple Haze'.

Thou shalt double-check which key thou intendest to play in. Verily, ensure that the guy leading hast not detuned his guitar a semitone, or the abomination will strike the ears of the multitude and they shall rise up against thee. Furthermore shalt thou know how high thou canst sing and where to place the capo thereto, otherwise the musicians shall play the introduction and then shalt thou find thyself cursed to squeak like a bat or croak like a frog.

Grab.

If though beest advanced in years yea and scant of breath thou shalt remember to breathe before commencing the last long note lest though should fade away and the multitude shall know not if thou art finished

Thou shalt not proceed upon a long tale of what passed yestereve at another club out of thy turn when another waiteth to play

Thou shalt not suddenly move from a jig to a reel to a strathspey an even again unto a jig lest thou causeth broken strings, fingers or ciapins among thy brethren.

*ROFLMAO* Actually, Little Neo, I've learned that the best learning situation is a jam session (for me, that is). If I can hear a tune all the way through in my head, I can play it. Some tunes are standards, and get played all the time. Not that this has anything to do with your question.

Bring that banjo, and sing nice and loud. Folks will admire your style and find you eccentric, which is quite endearing.

"Make a joyful noise"

If thou hast worked up a great arrangement of the song, play it not at the jam session. Attempts to make thine own star shine shall lead thee into darkness.

If thou art the only chordal instrument playing, thou may playest cool substitutions. But if there should be a multiple of guitars or citterns, even two, thou should play the chord of the lowest common denominator, as that is what others shall expect to play also.

John

Thou shalt not, if thou be a fiddler of skill, play a tune which moveth between keys at repetitions. For verily the multitude of melodionists and banjo players shall wax greatly wrathful and rise up and smite thee.

Thou shalt not exalt any one man or woman of skill over the assembly. Together thou hast joined in song; together shalt thou share.

Thou shalt not take the name of another picker's favorite player/writer/singer in vain; At such, thou art in peril of being smitten with stringed instruments about thine head.

Thus Saith The BEAR.

Peace on you,

1. Ensure your signal will have the strength needed to out-blast the signal you wish to jam
2. Ensure that the time and location of your broadcast is commesurate with the programming you want to jam
3. Ensure that your frequency is correct and corrected for drift
4. Ensure you are able to get away quickly if caught (suggest: van or panel van)
5. Ensure your power supply will not fail during broadcast
6. Ensure your signal generator or tape loop (or other source of jamming sound) is functioning properly and connected to broadcast equipment
7. Ensure all levels are set properly
8. Ensure your driver knows where to go and how to shake off a following vehicle
9. Empty your bladder first
10. Jam.
