Sea music lovers -- what do you think of "Footloose" for the name of a new group of sea shanty/maritime singers? According to one source the term means: when the bottom of a sail comes loose and dances freely in the wind. Any further suggestions?

Cindy, Wickford Express

Hi Cindy, nice to hear you're starting up another shanty group (thought you'd know better after all these yrs, yuk yuk, smile). Depending on who you've got with you could try the Fruit L(H)oops or Clewless instead or Headsale or the Staystills, how bout Battens in the Buff. OK,OK Gee's don't shoot me, don't shoot me. Any way good luck & hope you're ready by Mystic, who's in with you bye the way? Barry

Hi Barry,

Well, my worst nightmare has come true: I can't seem to kill "Wickford Express," a name I thought up on the spot, stageside, with no amount of consideration; nothing special, figured we'd change it when we started a "real band." That was in 1979. Now, no matter what I bill us as, Wickford Express comes up, as in "Hey aren't you guys..." And they throw a fit when I tell them we've regrouped, changed the band's name. And, of course, they want the publicity and audience pull W.E. gets, so, again and again, we get billed as Wickford Express. Guess I shouldn't complain about success, but geez, we don't even live in Wickford anymore! "Newport Express?" Particularly liked your suggestion of "Clewless," very appropriate. Who's with me? Everett Brown, Jon Campbell, Nancy Lemme - in varying assorted lineups, depending on the gig and who's available. Yeah, it would be nice to do Mystic 2001; we're ready - do you think Mystic is?

Warning to anyone just forming a band and deciding on a name for it: Take your time and consider it well - the name you choose could be yours forever if you are successful! But, ever the optimist, I am still taking suggestions for a new name. Back to the drawingboard, Barry Bones!

Regards, Cindy

Well, there's one--Bare Bones. Or, how about, Fore the Mast? Silly Sailors? Davey's Friends? Fill the Locker?

How about 'AVAST!'

Ebbie -- "avast" (stop!) is very appropriate for Newport in the summer, as there is a lot of heaving in the streets -- from those who over-imbibe. I thank you for the suggestion, though.

Sorcha -- if you only knew how close to the bone you came with your suggestion of "Davey's Friends" -- the whole reason I am trying to rename the group is because "the Dave" has left us! And since I am not only a banjo player, but a double-bones player, and sometimes referred to as "Bones," I have reservations about 'Bare Bones," for obvious reasons. This is, afterall, New England. Thanks, any more?

Peace and harmony, Cindy

I once spoke with a person out on the left coast who was part of a "chanty" group that named itself on the spot as it were. They were talking to the people booking them and called themselves the Shifty Sailors. they are now stuck with the name.

Looking forward to hearing you at Mystic Cindy.

Brett

Thanks for the suggestions -- you guys have cheered me up considerably with your great ideas for chantey band names. I was taking this naming thing so seriously when, afterall, it is quite a lot of fun! Great having more than one brain on a project. Keep 'em coming!
