Subject: Dates for Scottish gathering
From: Jock Morris
Date: 18 Oct 00 - 07:22 AM

Folks who've been following the Scottish Gathering thread will already have seen these dates, but Ian and I have agreed that it's probably a good idea to start a new thread and get people to actually sign up for what we're proposing.

Two meetings are proposed:

11th of November in St. Andrews, venue still to be arranged. Format will be an afternoon session (1pm onwards), meal together somewhere, evening session till we drop/get chucked out the pub.

18th and 19th of November in Leadburn Inn, Leadburn MidLothian. Format will be an evening session (possibly afternoon as well?), crash at Max Tone's home and then session again on Sunday, sometime.

All details are still very sketchy I know, but the dates and now fixed as are the rough locations!

Come on folks, let me know who's interested.

Scott

Calach/Ian from Edinburgh will be there.(Singer/songwriter/whistle/bodhran).
Hey Scott? Is this limited to mudcatters or can we bring travelling support?
P.S. Got friend near St Andrews getting someone to contact me about possible venues.

Ian,

Don't see any harm in allowing other folkies who are friends of 'catters coming along; though first call on crash space at Max Tone's should go to 'catters, non catters get the tents:-)

Cheers for the welcome to my friends, MaxTone! I haven't disappeared, but you know that busy student schedule...

Calach, I was thinking the Castle Tavern in St Andrews, same as Tuesday nights? It's a nice pub, and slower on Saturdays than most, and have good taste in music. I was also thinking Lafferty's, but they're much busier. So is the Cellar Bar, and the Whey Pat.

Thoughts? -J

Calach / Ian - I just saw that today! I was most upset. What do you want to bet the new management won't like folkies? *sigh* So - my recommendations are then, Lafferty's, Whey Pat, and the Cellar Bar, all of which and particularly Lafferty's I think would be fine in the afternoon, but likely very busy on a Saturday night. If not those, the Tudor is often quiet and quite nice, but has a jukebox and occasional patrons whom I doubt would be appreciative or polite enough not to turn it on. There's another little quiet one on North Street that I'm trying to remember the name of that a friend of mine used to work at - since as far as I can tell there's never anyone there, I doubt anyone would object. When I get a free moment I'll make some enquiries.

Many thanks for the re-direct, -- I'll learn how to do Blickies, just as soon as I have time to practice. Each time I go online I spend all my time catching up with messages.
How I wish we could preview our postings, to check the format/Blickies.
I'll maybe post a thread on the subject!
Just back from monthly Leadburn sess. -- Normal October turnout is maybe 8/12 folk; tonite, the usual minibus from surrounding towns - a 9 seater - had to be upgraded to a 22, so we had 30+ for the sess. Stormin'!

Am I right in thinking these are the dates:

11th of November in St. Andrews, venue still to be arranged. AND 18th and 19th of November in Leadburn Inn, Leadburn MidLothian. ?

I've got a busy couple of weeks between now and then

Having family to see to, I can't make it for the full weekend event at Leadburn, but I would be delighted to come along for a bash.

Regards

My apologies. Next time.

Ian / Calach - any luck on a St Andrews venue for you? I say we should fight for Aikman's Cellar Bar - good place, they appreciate music, and they don't even smoke while people are singing (much). I'm serious about that - went for an open-mike session the other night and the air was clear. I saw four cigarettes in the two hours I was there. Miraculously, everyone could sing...

I suspect it'll be tight on a Saturday night though.

Nothing so far wavestar, but my friend is trying (so he says)
scabby... thanks for keeping in contact, be glad to see you at any of the dates.
No problem about previous committments, I may have had them too, but luckily didn't. It's just I get really frustrated at the folkies who want their music served sterile on a plate, and don't want to be involved with something spontaneous and potentially better than some thats-not-traditional, finger-in-their-ear, shhhh-someones-singing pretentious gig.
Sorry, I ran away with myself then.....

Hey,
Any of you guys/gals got a MIDI keyboard you could bring - I've got HD recording, with MIDI etc. but no trigger.
I just thought it might be useful for logging tunes, for ourselves, and for posting on the forum; I've never tried creating MIDI files, so it would be in at the deep end - unless any of us are genned up on the process!

I've got a keyboard, but not really sure what you need on it? Also I'm now a bit lame on transport, so don't know if i could swing it.
I may have to rely on a lift to St andrews!

Calach,
I was only thinking of maybe being able to put down the odd MIDI file whilst at my house, if the need was there; nothing particular in mind - it might expand the scope of the session if we know the capability's there!
Live streaming to other 'catters would be even better, but that's just a pipedream!

Hi guys, just back from Crail Folk Club where we were the support for Rab Noakes. (name dropper)
Anyway! Before the gig, went round St Andrews looking for decent pubs for saturday.... what a driech place St Andrews is for decent pubs!
Found two, got details of publicans and will phone them this weekend.
Possibility 1: Homelea Hotel; got a room ajoining bar; doesn't do meals, but there's plenty rerstaurants nearby.
Possibility 2: The Tudor Inn; has a large area adjacent to main bar, which we could take over; does meals, but we can't play past 10.00pm as the pub gets PACKED. (last pub to close in town)
Both are within 30 secs of each other, near the north end of town, on the same street as the cinema.
If anyone has any further suggestions, add them here.
Yours, Calach/Ian

Hey, y'all,
Anyone wanna buy a fiddle?
Went up to Montrose last night, to view the instrument auction, looking for a better clarinet for my daughter, Alex.
Left bids on a nice Selmer, a cute simple system E-flat and a never-seen-before closed hole B-flat. Didn't get any of them.
Made the mistake, whilst I was there, of leaving bids on anything that I thought would be worth having, if it came cheap enough to turn over, or keep. Oh dear! Old habits die hard.
Phoned the auctioneer this afternoon, to be told my bill's £1300 (most of which I don't have)!!!!
5 fiddles, a banjo, 2 old snare drums, a lovely Selmer piccolo, a Glen chanter and........wait for it.........Yeah, you guessed, it, a bloody grand piano!!!!!!!! ---A super cute Challen 4' Baby Grand. I've now no excuse not to learn!
Hope to pay the bill in time to squeeze the joanna into the house in time for the 17/18/19th, in which case the MIDI keyboard can go back to the van! Keep in touch on this one, Calach.
Tattie -- E-mail me for Sunday info/phone numbers. I suspect we'll still be in the house ------until somebody suggests the pub!
Rob

Thanks for coming along on Sunday night (To Jock Morris) - sorry it was so quiet. Well, quiet indoors - like friggin Beirut outside.

The weekend went well, Friday, Saturday afternoon and night, and Sunday lunchtime events were busy.

I think what killed Sunday evening was Bonfire Night.

However, look forward to seeing some of you at Leadburn..

Scabby Doug: No need to apologise for the lack of people on Sunday night; quality was high and the craic was good. Just glad I made it home without the police stopping me for noise pollution from my sheared exhaust:-)

Heya, I'm back, and tired...

The Homelea is nice, and very quiet, it's the other one I had in mind when I made the first list, but couldn't remember the name. A friend of mine last year worked there. I don't know about their attitude for music, but the owner glared at us last year when I took the bardic group to sing... but we're students.

I shall try and phone them tomorrow, if no one else will...
