Gotta make this quick, 'cause I'm waiting for a student, but if it's too easy, just keep addin' questions, all my Mudcat Baseball Fanatic friends.

1. Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in series history. Who'd he beat? What was the score? Who was the opposing pitcher? Who was the last batter?

2. The "Babe" may well have "called his shot" (new film seems to indicate he might actually have "pointed") Who'd he call it against? Who was the pitcher?

3. Joe Carter won a series with a last inning homer. Off what team? What pitcher? Who were the managers?

4. Don Newcome was the first black pitcher to......?

5. Which manager won the most World series?

See Ya

Rick

If Ruth had called his shot. Cubs pitcher Charlie Root would have knocked him on his butt. Then put one in his ear. Charlie was that kind of guy.

1. I'm not much up on football,
2. He called it against his ego, and his id was the pitcher? (or is this a trick question?)
3. Was that the same Carter who was President?
4. Pitch a goolie in an American ball game?
5. Yogi Bear and Boo Boo?
Take me out of the ball game, Enjoy it lads,
Lor

I must say this, but I know the answer to #3--SADLY.

Joe Carter's home run in the 9th inning of the 1993 World Series--Toronto BlueJays against MY Philadelphia Philles. The homerun was off "The Wild Thing" Mitch Williams...afterwards deemed by Philly fans everywhere as UNFORGIVEN. The Managers were Cito Gaston for the Bluejs and Jim Fregosi for the Phillies. I can name the entire Philles starting lineup, bench, pitching staff, and most of the coaches too...but I won't go into that.

--Matt (hoping that his Phills will win the Big One someday...but who is rooting for his adopted team--The Mets)

Matt, I sympathize. I'm told that Mitch Williams was actually hounded by the fans at his house and was forced to move. Fregosi (who was just fired two weeks ago by the Jays) often told reporters over the last two years here that Mitch took twenty years off his life!

The odd thing about that homer was that Mitch made the perfect pitch to Carter. All season (and all his career) Carter would miss by a mile on low and inside curves with two strikes on him. This time he didn't.

It took 20 years off my life too...and I was only 14! Up until Monday, it was the worst day of my life.

Don Larsen's perfect game was agin the Brooklyn Bums(now the L.A. Bums), and the last batter was Dale Mitchell. Don't recall the score, and have another question for anyone, what was Larsen's nickname?

I think the opposing pitcher was Don Newcombe.

#1: was against the Bums, as indicated above. I seem to remember Johnny Podres as the opposing pitcher, who was expected to win that day. #2: Agree with previous respondent about Charlie Root. In her book "The Babe and I," Mrs. Ruth (at the time) says the mythical event and others depicted in the corny William Bendix bio-flick were all hogwash. #4: Newcombe was first black pitcher to win League MVP, among other things. #5: I'd have to guess the winningest manager in World Series annals was Casey Stengel, but that seems too obvious. Hopefully, Torre will soon move up the all-time list. Now a question of my own: does Rick have a little too much time on his hands?

One question: Anybody know a sucker who'll take my bet that New York is going to win this year?

You got that right Gern! Sometimes I feel like that tee-shirt logo, with the caption "Dammit! I forgot to have children!" Since the cats take up very little time, and I stopped watching TV, all I seem to be doing are music and Mudcat. Maybe I'll take up Karate.

Yup, Larsen beat Sal Maglie 2-0. Don't know his nickname Clifton. (was it buzzard, or big bird or something?)

Good job folks, ya got 'em all.

Rick

Maybe you could build an extension on to "Rick's Nook". ("Rick's Eyrie?", "Rick's Place" (of all the gin joints....))....

Thanks for this, Rick. I'm glad to see there are some Mudcatters who actually enjoy baseball like I do.
