Subject: The Whale Song
From: Barry T

For years I've longed to find the lyrics to a song sung by Shirley Jones on one of the episodes of the Partridge Family. It was titled The Whale Song, and was written by Dan Pevton and Marty Kaniger. It was never released on any of their albums.

I've asked the webmaster of the Shirley Jones Fan Club website, but perhaps one of you already has the lyrics. You can read about it here, and listen to one verse and refrain here. (Warning 570k wav file!)

If I manage to find it, I'll sequence a midi (How can I resist?) and share the lyrics with you. It's a beautiful melody with a poignant message!

So, do you have a friend that is a DJ? Ask him to look in the archives of the radio station.

I've made partial progress tracking down this tune... one verse and the chorus plus my midi sequence.

Chorus
Whale song, soft and low
Sing a story as gently you go
Whale song, I hear what you say
This may be the last time you're passing this way.

Sing me a song of times that you knew
When the waters were clear and the seabirds they flew
Through a sky that was clear from the sea to the land
Safe from the fear and destruction of man.

I may have found an individual who has the rest of the verses, but he has to scour his archives to look. In the meantime hum along or make up your own verses. Nice tune, to be sure!

We have a bingo!

THE WHALE SONG

Whale song, soft and low
Sing a story as gently you go
Whale song, I hear what you say
This may be the last time you're passing this way.

Sing me a song of times that you knew
When the waters were clear and the seabirds they flew
Through a sky that was clear from the sea to the land
Safe from the fear and destruction of man.

Whale song, soft and low
Sing a story as gently you go
Whale song, I hear what you say
This may be the last time you're passing this way.

Song of the whale so sweet and so clear
But no song at all to the ones who won't hear
And if people don't listen, and if people don't know
Might the song of the man be the next song to go.

Whale song continue to sing
There's a place in this world for each living thing
So long, but just for today
'Cause people will listen and I know there's a way.

Repeat last chorus

Play Midi

Composed by Dan Peton and Marty Kaniger

Thanks, guys! Wherever you are!

Thanks for the kind words. Don't mean to nit-pik but just a couple of minor corrections on the printed lyrics - second line of the chorus should read... "sing ME a story as gently you go" and the last line of the last verse should read... "FREE from the fear and destruction of man". Glad you all appreciate the song... isn't it a shame though that the lyrics are still relevant.

THE WHALE SONG
(Dan Peton and Marty Kaniger)

Whale song, soft and low
Sing me a story as gently you go
Whale song, I hear what you say
This may be the last time you're passing this way.

Sing me a song of times that you knew
When the waters were clear and the seabirds they flew
Through a sky that was clear from the sea to the land
Free from the fear and destruction of man.

Whale song, soft and low
Sing me a story as gently you go
Whale song, I hear what you say
This may be the last time you're passing this way.
