Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fall Is Here (Charlie Maguire) From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Oct 20 - 09:09 PM Yup, I'd banish you to Starbuck's, Leeneia - but you sang the song beautifully, so all is forgiven. I love that song. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fall Is Here (Charlie Maguire) From: GUEST Date: 12 Oct 20 - 07:22 PM I've been around farms enough to know that it takes the whole family to run a family farm, so I added this verse for the singaround: And when the helpmeet leaves her desk with paperwork up to her ears and fills the house with pumpkin spice around the place, I know that fall is here. Joe said I got two demerits for mentioning pumpkin spice. I had wanted to have her putting up Halloween decorations and Indian corn, but they wouldn't scan. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fall Is Here (Charlie Maguire) From: Barbara Date: 13 Oct 11 - 11:46 PM FWIW, I added a verse to this when I sang it this year: When the swallows line the wires, Rising from the cornfields near To gather for their journey south Around the place, I'll know that fall is here. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fall Is Here (Charlie Maguire) From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Oct 10 - 09:14 PM Sally led this song at the recent Getaway gathering. Clearly it's still one of her favorites. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fall Is Here (Charlie Maguire) From: GUEST,Ella Date: 08 Oct 10 - 11:05 PM I grew up listening to this song sung by Sally Rogers and I love it! Very deeply ingrained in my memory and association with fall. Just reacquired the song and can listen to it for real again, and checking the internet for lyrics to see if if heard it all right. Now I think I must find the original version too. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: around the place, I know that Fall i From: Mudlark Date: 29 Aug 02 - 10:35 PM I love the words of this song, and the prelude that preceeded it. It's exactly the way I feel about my own small country place, where every shrub and tree is known and the first signs of fall noted with intimacy. Thank you for writing such an evocative song, Charlie Maguire (and giving us a website to visit), and thanks to you, Jim Dixon for posting it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: around the place, I know that Fall i From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 29 Aug 02 - 10:25 PM Wow, it gave me a turn to see that I had apparently posted a message in a somnambulistic state and then come upon it unexpectedly. But then I saw that I posted it two years ago. I'm so glad that Jim Dixon kindly posted the words to this song so that I can sing it around the house as fall returns. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: around the place, I know that Fall i From: GUEST,Charlie Maguire Date: 29 Aug 02 - 08:27 PM Hi Folks,
It was interesting to read all of the comments regarding my song "Fall is Here" which I wrote entirely in a dream one fall afternoon then woke myself up and wrote it down. It is still available and sung by lots of singers, and you can go to my web site as Jim Dixon has told you at
To dispell other rumors I read about here let me tell you that I write songs six months out of the year for the National Park Service-US Department of Interior-although I have also written for Minnesota State Parks and have a new CD of that work available. I performed on "A Prairie Home Companion" from 1974 until 1983, and wrote a lot of my better known songs and premiered them on that show. I am NOT related to Pop or to Bodie Wagner, but they are my brothers just the same. We have shared a lot of road times and festival times together, and they are both doing well. Pop has his own web site too under his own name.
Thanks to Jim Dixon to tell me he logged "Fall Is Here" here. I appreciate the notice and to those who wrote in to help, thank you.

Subject: Lyr Add: FALL IS HERE (Charlie Maguire) From: Jim Dixon Date: 20 Aug 02 - 05:39 PM Charlie Maguire now has his own website! There are sound samples of many of his songs there. Following lyrics copied from http://www.charliemaguire.com/FallIs.html FALL IS HERE (Charlie Maguire © Mello-Jamin Music) "I meant this song to be more than about a season of the year. It's about living on your own place, being your own boss, being proud of your work, and being aware of all the things that make up your world." --CM When my cows no longer care to go Out to their pasture far or near, But stand close in the last warm sun, Around the place, I'll know fall is here. And when the corn goes into dent, Across the fields like old men appear, And we pick it and store it all away, Around the place, I'll know that fall is here. When the limbs of the apple and the pear Lean down with their fruit so near, And my children go a-gathering, Around the place, I'll know that fall is here. And when the hunters come from town, Seeking the pheasant and the deer, With their dogs in front to point the game, Around the place, I'll know that fall is here. When the hay and straw are in the barn, Stacked to the roof, tier on tier, Smelling like a summer come and gone, Around the place, I'll know that fall is here. Around the place, I'll know that fall is here, When the evenings come early and the mornings are clear. Over all of the fields that I worked this year, Around the place, I'll know that fall is here. [Sung by Charlie Maguire on "Harbour Lights: The Second Voyage."] |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: around the place, I know that Fall i From: DonMeixner Date: 26 Oct 00 - 10:47 AM It's on Sally Rogers' "Circle of the Sun" album. Charlie Maguire tune I believe. Who is a relative (?) of Pop and Bodie Wagner, maybe, maybe not.
When the cows no longer care to go,
When the hunters come in from the towns, That's the best my memory can offer Don |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: around the place, I know that Fall i From: GUEST,John Leeder Date: 26 Oct 00 - 10:16 AM Barry Luft will pass on the lyrics, but I didn't get permission to put his email address on-line. Contact me at john.leeder@carswell.com, and I'll pass you along to Barry. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: around the place, I know that Fall i From: GUEST,John Leeder Date: 25 Oct 00 - 06:14 PM I believe Charlie Maguire wrote the song. Barry Luft recorded it, and sings it around Calgary (and a number of people have learned it from him). I'll see if Barry has a copy of the lyrics handy. Maybe tomorrow... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: around the place, I know that Fall i From: Jacob B Date: 25 Oct 00 - 05:42 PM That's it Jim. A search of the web revealed that Charlie Maguire does not have his own web site (he's now working full time as The Singing Ranger in a Minnesota state park), but I did fina a playlist for a radio station which played the song. It says that the song Fall is Here comes from HARBOUR LIGHTS/Train on the Island, which seems to mean the album Harbour Lights, on the label Train On The Island. Hope that helps, leeneia. Jacob |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: around the place, I know that Fall i From: GUEST,Jim Dixon Date: 25 Oct 00 - 01:18 AM Another possibility is Charlie Maguire. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: around the place, I know that Fall i From: Jacob B Date: 24 Oct 00 - 05:12 PM I heard it performed on Prairie Home Companion, a decade or two ago. The singer was a semi-regular on PHC back then, and I believe he said he wrote it. My memory says his name was Pop Wagner. Does that sound familiar to anyone? |
Subject: around the place, I know that Fall is .. From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 Oct 00 - 04:49 PM Several years ago I heard Sally Rogers (sp) sing a beautiful song about autumn on a farm. Now that the trees are turning, that song is haunting me. It contained the words, "..and when the hunters come from town, tum tumty tum tum and the deer, with their dogs ahead to point the game, around the place, I know that Fall is here." If anybody out there has all the words to this song, would you please post them? |
