Subject: FSGW Getaway 2001-Which dates?
From: Charlie Baum
Date: 24 Oct 00 - 11:46 PM

Camp Ramblewood has a couple of open weekends for next Fall's Getaway--if we make our decision quickly.

September 14-16, 2001
or
October 26-28, 2001

Mudcatters who are likely to come to the Getaway are welcome to share opinions and give reasons for a preference in this thread, or send me a personal message, or e-mail me. (click to e-mail).

The decision needs to be made fairly quickly, especially if we want to nab the September dates. The decision of the judges is final.

Charlie:

Here are my thoughts, more as a FSGW member and Montgomery County School Parent than as a Mudcatter. The MCPS 2001-2002 school year calendar won't be out however until December or January.

The First two weeks of September are crazy crazy crazy with school stuff: Open Houses, Getting Ready, Back-to-School Picnics, etc.. We can barely manage all of the stuff as it is.

I would therefore much prefer the October dates. Nice Cool Weather. No Skeeters. The trees starting to turn. What could be better?

I missed it. It sounded like a blast. I will try and go next year, and would prefer the October dates. Too much work-related stuff happening my way in September. JAB's point about no skeeters and cool weather makes October pretty attractive, too.

Me, too, Charlie, the October dates. It might be chilly but I'd rather throw on an extra blanket than have to contend with mosquitoes.

October is always a crapshoot...you can have cold weather the first week and 70s later. I'd prefer Sept 'cause the craft show season is not such an issue, but I know how it is for others. I'll deal with it...(looks like the votes are already tending) I do hope we can figure out SOME venue in the camp that can be heated for late night sings. (We brought a heating pad, and having it under the blankets made sleeping about tolerable)

I was a day-tripper this year, but hope to work things out to spend more time at the Getaway next year (if not as a camper). The September dates are absolutely out, since we've already made commitments for that period, but, if it ends up being those dates, I'll certainly plan on 2002.

I posted this to the wrong thread, so I'm posting again here.

Tim and I, who froze at night this past weekend, are voting for Sept 14 for next year even though that makes it very close to Journey's End (Labor Day Weekend in PA).

I wonder how many folkies who attend - or might atend the Getaway are cookie-phobics who should be on Don and Dolores Nichols' "Getaway" mailing list?

If you don't read the Mudcat Forum, please email me right away and...

Oh, all right, then, if you know a folkie who hates cookies, ask them if they want to be on the getaway list, and tell them to send a request to Don Nichols if you have his email address, or to me if you don't (since I didn't ask his permission).

The Getaway List is about - The Getaway! It's also about folkmusic resources on the Internet. Moderated, no spam allowed, very strict. It is just barely and rarely active at this point, but that could change.

if you really hate 'cookies'...as in little bits of code which can follow you around the WWW, there ARE fairly easy solutions...you can turn 'em off completely, or, because they can be useful, like in Mudcat, you can selectively edit/accept them by the use of a 'guard' program like Naviscope, Proxomitron, AtGuard, or ZoneAlarm (probably the best)...it really works

I prefer Oct because of the foliage, lack of mosquitoes and because it's colder. (I had a very warm sleeping bag that I never even zipped up this year.)

yep...the heat thing...there ARE ways to stay warm in bed...(no, not THAT way!...heating pads, sleeping bags and electric blankets!).....but staying warm enough to sing and pick without shivering is sort of important.perhaps electric space heaters in certain places?

(well...maybe 'that' way)

When Charlie, Dolores et al were checking out potential camps, they did find a heated one, but. It had fixed bunk beds and could only sleep 101 people on the lower level bunks. At our age, do we want to be getting in and out of an upper bunk if we have to go to the bathroom in the night? Anyway it's not available for next year.

So, Charlie and I have been discussing ways to provide warmth in a legal, moral, nonfattening and environmentally safe way. May start another thread later on (maybe closer to the actual time).

Miriam, is the Getaway list a newsgroup? Where and what is it? (You may have provided this information, but if you did I wasn't smart enough to comprehend. Not the first time....)

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2001-Which dates?
From: MiriamKilmer

The getaway list is a simple moderated email list - not a newsgroup - managed and moderated by Don and Dolores Nichols. That means that members get messages in their own private email boxes, and they can respond to the whole list. Don or Dolores gets to decide whether the messages are sufficiently focused for the list. To join, you have to tell Don or Dolores that you want in.

It started out as "Netaway" but Don changed the name after getting swamped with spam.

For many years (long before Gore invented the Internet) my own motto has been "Never refuse a cookie." But some people have had unfortunate experiences with the digital kind. I will tell them about Bill's 'guard' program solution to the cookie problem.

For their sake (not mine) - is it possible to read and respond to Mudcat Forum threads as a guest without accepting cookies (i.e. if you have them turned off?).

Catspaw, does that mean you're thinking about coming?

Bill & Ferrara, I downloaded the ZoneAlarm program when Bill first posted the link, and I'm very glad I did. (I haven't a clue why I go to one page and it tries to download 20 cookies - the sponsors must be doing marketing research or something. One thing I'm sure of is they don't do much to "enhance my browsing experience." Bah!) I had one IP try to dump a data packet on my computer. I don't know what the heck that was for, but I sure didn't want it.

I've got ZoneAlarm and MSIE set to ask me if I want to accept the cookies. I can accept Mudcat's (which has a reason for being there) and decline most of the others.

Miriam, yes it's possible to post to Mudcat without accepting a cookie. That's what all the "GUESTS" are doing.

One suggestion: get a golf cart to help folks who don't get around so well. I don't know if that's "do-able" but thought I'd mention it anyway.

Can we bring space heaters? Turn them on when we're around; turn them off when we're not? I was toasty at night, thanks to sheets and blankies provided by Rita and Bill. But I froze at the chow hall on Sunday night and finally had to go to the cabin and crawl under the covers to warm up.

And, thank you, Dani, for the towels and pillows. It sure made a big difference in what size bag I had to tote around!!

The days were warm and beautiful. Longsleeve shirt weather, but a wonderful change from North Florida. G-d was looking out for us, definitely.

But, I do think space heaters are the answer. Or battery-operated heated socks and underthings.

Save the weekend of October 19-21, 2001!

Beyond this thread, I'd sent out an e-mail to loads of people (everyone who cam who had e-mail that was entered correctly enough that it didn't bounce as undeliverable)--and the consensus seems to be for October, with a few exceptions. The main objection to October is the possibility of cold, but others prefer October weather (fall leaves, no summer humidity, no mosquitoes, etc.) with only a few conflicts.

I asked the camp if they'd have the third weekend of October available--equivalent to this year--and they said yes! It should be a tad warmer than the fourth weekend. So I've put in for the weekend of October 19-21, 2001. Mark your calendars!

And, Jeri, Charlie has already suggested golf carts or an equivalent.

Camp Letts was heated, and there was a working fireplace in the dining hall at Prince William Forest Park, so we have never before had to hold late night sings in an unheated room in the cold. We want to plan for that as best we can. (The fireplaces at Ramblewood are very old and it would cost a bundle to bring them up to code, so we can't use them.) So -- any suggestions? Whatever suggestions we think of will have to be OK'd by the camp.

Maybe they'll warm us 150 hot bricks to put under our feet.... Or hot potatoes? We can eat 'em for a late night snack when we're done singing. OK, let's hear some more suggestions. We can't all share Pam's fireman.

We're sending out feedback questionnaires with this year's directory of Getaway attendees. So you can help a lot with the planning for next year if you send 'em back to us!

BTW, one reason for moving to Ramblewood was to allow us to have more people at the Getaway. It has occurred to me that, mostly, only people who have already been to the Getaway read these Getaway threads. So, if you know people you think would love and appreciate the Getaway, tell 'em about it when you see 'em at Mudcat gatherings, NOMAD, etc.

Would someone post an update with all of the info for this, please? I went to the website and each time I clicked on the Oct. dates, it took me to the June 2nd message about there being NO festival at Camp Echo.

I've figured out it will be at Ramblewood, Obt. 10-21, right? Would like to know more about accomodations, costs, if it's too soon, too late to sign up, etc.

My sister, "bet", would be able to take the time and fly out and Rog and I are looking at maybe trying to drive, with side visits to our son and Spaw. A long shot, maybe, but one we want to explore, at least.

thanks,

kat

The dates are, fer sure, Oct. 19-22, 2001. It's still too soon to sign up, because we haven't announced the prices yet. They will be similar to last year's prices, and will depend onhow long you stay and whether or not you're a member of (or join) the FSGW. Give us a few more weeks to ratify prices. Mudcat will be among the first to know--prabably ahead of the FSGW, if history is any guide.

Well, I can't wait for this one. I hope this is the biggest yet, in terms of Mudcatters attending. You will love the FSGW people. They are wonderful hosts, and the programs are first rate. And there are fish in the pond, and bigger fish in the River. Tunes, food, songs, gatherings, Mudcatters..........and then we will all hang out until Tuesday and do the Mudcat Radio show......don't get no better 'n that. I will be there................and Rick, you said earlier in this thread that we had a deal......still on? Let's try to get a sizable Toronto contingent.....that would seal it as a great gathering.

All the best,

you know, what with folk-type music not exactly #1 on the charts, and the *ahem*...'aging' of the average folkie, the Getaway had been showing signs of wear and a sort of lack of depth in recent years...(I have been going since '78). It is always good, but there were real problems with 'critical mass'.

This infusion of new people partially as a result of Mudcat has been a real shot-in-the-arm, and allows 'new' blood and new friends. We have always had many friends from up & down the east coast, but it is nice to broaden one's horizons.

I hope that this merging of 'locals' and visitors from afar continues to be happy and productive. We are always tryig to figure out how to make the Getaway better.

Oh, I hope you do come, Kat -- and you too, MMario! That would be so fine.

I'm setting up the program again this year and would love to hear as early as possible from people who think they MAY be coming. You don't have to know for sure, at this stage. And if you will let me know what your main interests are, I'll try to work them into the program.

If you were there last year, let me know which workshops or concerts worked particularly well for you! I try to have variety from year to year, but there are favorite topics that we always try to include.

Rita

ps Mario, I heard you singing the "Mingulay Boat Song" -- was it tonight? Liked it (and your singing!) very well, started singing along, and later this evening I sang it at the Royal Mile Pub's shanty sing. Thanks for the reminder of a great song.

I think the Mudcat is seriously eroding his crusty exterior. Not that he's getting any better looking, but he sure is getting sweeter.

Howsomever, in this case I agree with him. The Mudcatters are a breath of fresh air for the Getaway. I'm looking forward to meeting more of you face to face, myself.

How the hell am I going to sleep without you in the next bunk snoring and making a racquet like a one lung steam bilge pump, Barry????????

Jed, you have to make it, pal. You and Mario, and all the rest would make this one hell of a gathering. And could we make some great music. Now if I can just find a way to get Dave Swan to join his bride (Pam, you just have to come again!!!!), Rick to keep his part of the deal, and Patterson to let me pick him up on the way,..........and we could have a helluva good time and a bored meeting of Patterson, Fielding, Swan and Lane, Layabouts at Large and for Hire. I want to have a quorum so we can vote on a new member. I am proposing Dan Milner be added to the Bored of Defectors as a full padnuh. I have observed his technique and find his ability to layabout to be second to none. And his wife is, and possess', the appropriate amount of character to qualify as a spouse of a layabout. I knew she was right when he and I disappeared to do a little fishing, and she just gave us this "Boys and their toys" smirk.

Besides, the only reliable link would be to www.fsgw.org and then click on the Getaway. (The actual full URLs for the Getaway are subject to change from season to season and year to year.)

Rita, I would be happy to help out in the performance workshop end. Perhaps a workshop on funny songs. I will be going to Commonground in July and will take a workshop on Worksongs with Sparky Rucker and Bob Zentz. Perhaps I'll have a few ideas in that area as well.

Fortunato- That slogan read 1932. I invented it to plug the first New Lost City Rambler concert in New York, and we distributed over 2000 tags to people who wore them without the foggiest notioon of what it was all about. On t'other side was a stylized blue eagle (remember the NRA, anyone?) holing a banjo and a guitar with the cryptic acronym:

NLCRA (or New Lost City Ramblers Admirer)

There's a copy of the tag in the old New Lost City Ramblers songbook. 1935 wan't nearly as interesting to return to.

Also; when do people show up? Will most arrive on Fri night?

No requirement to be a member, though members receive a discount, and you can join when you register.

Many people show up on Friday after leaving work; since people leave work in places from Virginia to Connecticut and beyond, arrival times may vary, but by 8:30 p.m. or so, there's always informal good music going on Friday night.

Well, the registration form is complete, but the FSGW website is an experimental exercise in changeability, as we're slowly instigating a new system that takes the burden off of the webmaster and allows committee chairs to update their info.

Try this link to see if it produces a Getaway registration form. I'll produce a formal Mudcat link later this week, along with the brochure information.
