This just in.(For me anyway).

PETE SEEGER LOSES HIS BANJO--PART 1 OF 2 On August 8 of this year, folk legend Pete Seeger lost his banjo after a benefit concert in Rosendale, New York. At first, the police believed that the instrument had been stolen from Seeger's car after the show. Seeger offered a $1,000 reward for the return of the banjo, which he had played since the mid-1940s. The reward offer quickly spread by word of mouth through the folk community as well as on the Internet. A week after the banjo was reported missing, somebody put a fake banjo up for sale on an Internet auction site, claiming it was Seeger's. Two weeks after the banjo's disappearance, it turned up in the hands of Gary Schneeweiss, Jr., who had found it by the side of the road. Seeger's name and phone number were in the case, and Schneeweiss had tried to call, but Seeger's phone wasn't working. After the phone got fixed, the call went through and Seeger got his banjo back. It's believed that Seeger lost the banjo when he put it on the roof of his car, forgot it was there, and drove off.

The "E-Bay ad" for what was hinted to be Pete Seeger's banjo was a hoax all around. Not only was it not Pete Seeger's banjo but it was not on E-Bay; someone had done a great job of setting up what looked like an E-Bay presentation. Clever, though in bad taste, and I expect that E-Bay took a dim view of it for copyright or maybe trademark reasons.

No Bob, I didn't mean it that way....I thought you might be interested in some of the comments from here including the e-bay thing. If you enter SEEGER in the filter box and set the refresh to 90 days, you should get all of them.

Sian,

Thanks very much for this very interesting read--the revival history according to Pete makes for a fascinating story, doesn't it? I printed the article out to show my bluegrass and old-timey friends.

Loved the "New New Economy" article too!

I think that article ought to be in a some permanent place in the Mudcat, so that every time someone started thread asking "What is folk", it would be linked in.

It's full of lines that are the kind of quotes to put into those kind of discussions to set people thinking and help them get their heads straight.
