Subject: Manchester UK get together
From: Catrin
Date: 27 Oct 00 - 04:01 PM

Sorry I've not posted before folks, I've been soooo busy.

Just to let you know I have not forgotten.

The dates we are looking at are 19th Nov so far (but that's negotiable).

I am still thinking about veunes. I could really do with knowing how many will turn up since this does affect the choice of venue. My favourite drinking ground is TINY so it's probably out. (I know there will be a few non-mudcat Mancunians interested).

There is a possibility of a room upstairs in a pub in Central Manchester on the Saturday night (The Hare and Hounds in Shudehill, if anyone knows it).

And possibly a pub in Stockport for the Friday night. (which has offered to be very accomodating).

Other things I'mm looking at are perhaps to all meet for an Indian Meal on the Saturday lunchtime (In Russholme - yummy!) - Other ideas welcome.

We need to talk about this folks - comments? Anyone?

Cheers,

Catrin

Catrin,

A mudcat get together on my doorstep! Sounds great.

Of course I know the 'Hare and Hounds' I've traipsed up Shudehill more times than... (well quite a lot)

I might not play or sing, and might just sit in the corner looking tired, but if that sort of person is welcome, I'd love to come

Zeb (who is Ed if we ever meet)

Catrin, I have been told about the curries in Rusholme before (I have a friend who lived there when she was a student) - it sounds very tempting...

Hi everybody!

Great response so far.

Ed - Of course you're welcome! If Llanstock is anything to go by, you may be the only 'audience'! and as such will be greatly appreciated!

Geordie - are you local? if so, PM me if you want to know about Manchester folk scene - unnacompanied singers are the best aren't they? (Well I'm one too actually *BG*)

John and Llanfair - 'twould be great to see you again!

Nynia! 'twould be great to meet you!

I'm going to put some serious thought into this, I may need to do some 'checking out' of potential pubs and get back to you. How tedious (not!)

Cheers,

Catrin

I think you could use the upstairs room of the White Lion for free - plenty enough space I think and above our usual folk club room. I will check with the landlord tonight.

Good beer as well BTW - The Frederics (Robinsons) bitter was superb on Saturday but beware the Old Tom - at 8.5% ABV it has a way of catching up on you!!!

Only problem is it is not central Manchester but about 5 miles west. The offers there anyway so let me know if you need it.

Probably easier if you PM me - I will check my box later as I am off to Bradford now (If the M62 ain't snowed in)

See yaz all

May I ask you Mancunians a favour? If anyone is browsing through secondhand or junk shops, and finds an old Manchester Liner coffee mug.White with Blue stripe and ML surrounded by a belt symbol on it. I would gladly pay you for it( within reason say five pounds or so) and the cost of mailing it to me. My old one broke and I would like to buy another for sentimental reasons. Probably some around since the company had eighteen ships when I joined and went out of business in 1983. Hope you dont mind me asking but its something I would not find around here. PM me if you come across one on your travels, Thanks. Yours, Aye. Dave

No B&B's I can think of in Swinton but 2 premier lodges within a mile - 45 quid for a room that sleeps 3 or 4 makes them quite reasonable if you are prepared to share. Nearest hotel is a small private one whos single rate is quite dear (40 pounds) but the double/twin rate is only 48 so that becomes more like it!

I think Catrins job of picking a venue is hard enough without me adding more complications though so I will not try to sell the Lion idea just because it is my local! I have PM'd Catrin some details to try and help.

See yez all - wherever it be :-)

Just another thought - wherever we may be in Manchester - the weekend of 18/19 Nov almost co-incides with BBC's children in need day (17th). Hows about we get involved somehow with that. It may not only help a good cause but played right could be good publicity for Mudcatters everywhere!

As well as that, seeing as the Beebs own folk presenter is from our fair city, I wonder if we could somehow involve Mrs Hardings kid himself???

Food for thought eh?

Comrades, something very big for Skipjack is possibly happening, and it's particularly possibly happening that weekend. It's bad juju to say what, but it involves boats, foreign countries and bad weather. It looks like I possibly can't make it, but she's a copper bottomed excuse.

Yes Dave - it is difficult. Manchester is a big city and you would think that there would be loads of places to choose from. But finding a folk-friendly place who will enjoy (not just tolerate) a bunch of computer nerd-folkies, is not that easy (especially on a weekend).

Have no fear though. It will be done. Suggestions from other Mancunians who may haunt different places to myself would be welcome.

At the moment The White Lion for one of the nights is looking good.

Cheers,

Catrin

Subject: RE: Manchester UK get together
From: Catrin
Date: 30 Oct 00 - 08:36 PM

A few hours later, I've been having conversations with non-mudcatter folkies with ideas for venues.

I was reminded of a time earlier this year when I was given (volunteered - mug!) to book a cottage for me and my mates to stay at for a week in the summer. What I decided then was that I could not expect perfection in where we stayed, but that what was important was that we all had somewhere we could be together. In that sense, the venue did not matter - as long as it was big enough. And I was right. We had a wonderful time.

So,

given that I am going to be away for most of next week

and given that Dave the Gnome has suggested the White Lion

and given that I was talking tonight to somebody else who knows the White Lion and was talking about how perfect it would be (that's two references)

and given that people travelling need to book places to stay.

and given that they will want to be doing that soon...

I suggest that we all head for The White Lion. Somewhere to congregate and sing and play. Dave the Gnome? Whatcha think?

We could still have a curry in Russholme (perhaps Saturday teatime?)

Offers from local 'catters of accomodation for distant catters?...

Cheers,

Catrin

P.S. the places I had in mind, that I mentioned on the previous thread, are out really, one's too small and the other has a 'resident' fiddle player - we would be taking over his night - which I don't think would be fair. Also, I have a gut feeling that one pub for the whole weekend makes some sort of sense.

Feedback - please?

Is it this one in Swinton?

White Lion
242 Manchester Rd

Even though the address says Manchester Road, I think it may be on Chorley Road at the junction of Chorley Road and Lower Sutherland St.

The address (242 Manchester Road) is spot on - look on the Street level map and it is at the junction of Worsley Road (A572) and Manchester Road (A6) just at the point where Manchester Road turns into Chorley Road.

Not near Lwr Sutherland Street - Sorry Brakn - only pub near there is the Foresters and I wouldn't wish that on anyone!

White Lion don't do beds but as posted earlier there are 2 x premier lodges nearby. The New Ellesmere - 1/2 mile and the Henry Boddington - 1 mile. Plenty of rooms at the moment at 46 pounds for a twin/double or family room. Central booking number is 08702 01 02 03. There is also a private Hotel about 1/4 mile away - Cordells, which is 48 pounds for a twin / double including breakfast Tel: 0161 794 5330

There is plenty of other accomodation nearby in Salford and Eccles (2-3 miles) if these are too expensive or booked up. Ring Salford Tourist information at Salford Quays on 0161 794 5330 for details.

I can put up a single and a couple as well but the double is a fold out in the dining room. PM me if you want to take me up on the offer.

Anyone else interested in trying to do something for Children in need over that weekend BTW???

Cheers and see you all soon

D the G

Llanfair - My rusty voice is infinitely preferable to my inept pipe playing I regret to say.

The tune bits are starting to get together but the drones are very unpredictable. As my speed is only now starting to build up I need the drones to give "body" to the chanter. I expect to get this sorted in 2/3 months so I will then go public!!

Will be speaking to your sister tonight re White Lion. SEE YOU THERE

I've just sent a pm to DtheG.

What I think is that we should not get into too much 'organising' - especially since, by virtue of geography, most of it would fall onto DTG to do. (He lives near the White Lion).

I think 'catters want a chance to be together, to talk, sing and play. That being the case, what would be needed is two rooms, one for session musicians and one for singers. If only one room is available, we'll have to take turns.

Therefore, my idea of 'programme of events' would run somethinglike -

Fri eve - singing/session
Sat lunch - singing/session
Sat Tea - Russholme (food)
Sat Night - singing/session
Sun Lunch - singing/session

Whatcha all think?

Cheers,

Catrin
