When we first had the auction, we usually put up a thread to highlight items offered, esp. when it was handcrafted items, like jewlery from bbc or Don Meixner.

Anyway, for those who may not notice the auction that much, just a reminder that it is an easy way to help out the Mudcat. Items do not have to be musical in nature.

I am clearing out a lot of my library and have just listed a voice technique book in which some of you may be interested. 100% of the winning bid goes to the Mudcat and I will pay postage, no matter where you are. Please take a look.

This thread starts an interesting point for me. Are there any books out there that specifically address vocal techniques for traditional music? Most of my training is semi-classical (or at least geared toward theatrical performance in one way or another), and the teachers I've had have all been EXTREMELY snobbish about any other type of singing, so it was basically "sing operatically, or get out." Grrr. Don't get me wrong--those lessons helped me really develop and strengthen my range--but it was frustrating when I was forced to sing "The Salley Gardens" as though it were an aria by Verdi.

So, I've basically learned by imitation on the trad front. I guess that's the old-fashioned way, anyway ;) But if anyone knows any good resources, I'd love to know about them.

Molly, it takes a while, but if you type in the word "voice" in the SuperSearch box at the top of the thread titles and hit Go, there are scads of threads which will come up(you'll have to scroll down the list of songs with that word in it, in the DT, to get to the thread listings.) I know there were several which discuss all manner of things related to trad. singing, all of it from some of the best people out there, IMO. I think you'd find some helpful things in them. Hope that helps.

BTW,thanks to everyone who is bidding. Looks like I'll have to search for some more like this one.

A little history about this particular book: Roger found it up on top of Boysen Peak, here in Wyoming, in the television transmitter building. Years and years ago, they used to pay some poor soul to stay up there all winter long, all alone. Whomever it was had to be pretty creative and adept at entertaining themselves, as well as not bug out at being so isolated and alone. Not many trips to town and virtually no visitors; too dangerous either way. Even now, to get up there in the winter takes a snowcat and about 2-3 hours to go the straight-up sixteen miles over boulders and sagebrush and one never goes alone, unless they have a cell phone and all manner of provisions. So...this book probably was studied and saved someone's sanity on a long winter's night!
