Subject: The Anchors Away From: GUEST,Kat McMahon fakat99@cs.com Date: 29 Oct 00 - 04:37 AM Has anyone seen "The Irish and How they got that way?" by Frank McCourt? One of the songs they do has the lyrics: The anchors away, the anchors away... It tells the tale of one left in Ireland watching the ship leaving for America. Does anyone know the song? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Anchor's Away / The Anchor's Aweigh From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Dec 04 - 03:09 PM As far as I can tell, it's not a film but a stage play or musical revue. The original 1997 cast recording of "The Irish ... And How They Got That Way" (Varèse Sarabande VSD-5916, 1998) gives the title as THE ANCHOR'S AWEIGH. It is sung by Ciaran Sheehan and Donna Kane. I transcribed this from a few sound samples: The anchor's aweigh. The anchor's aweigh. Fare thee well, fare thee well, remember me. Weep not, my love, I trembling said. Doubt not a constant heart like [mine?]... The notes I've been able to find give no origin information. |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE ANCHOR'S WEIGHED From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Dec 04 - 01:44 AM Nutty: Yes, it does look like the same song! But the version used in the play must have been "folk-processed" a bit. From The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music: THE ANCHOR'S WEIGHED Braham. "Sung by Mr. Geo. Simpson" [no date] 1. The tear fell gently from her eye When last we parted on the shore. My bosom beat with many a sigh To think I ne'er might see her more, To think I ne'er might see her more. "Dear youth," she cried, "and canst thou haste away, My heart will break; a little moment stay. Alas! I cannot, I cannot part from thee. The anchor's weigh'd. The anchor's weigh'd. Farewell! Farewell! Remember me. 2. "Weep not, my love," I trembling said. "Doubt not a constant heart like mine. I ne'er can meet another maid Whose charms can fix my heart like thine! Whose charms can fix my heart like thine!" "Go then," she cried, "but let thy constant mind Oft think of her you leave in tears behind." "Dear maid, this last embrace my pledge shall be. The anchor's weigh'd. The anchor's weigh'd. Farewell! Farewell! Remember me." |
