Subject: MUDCAT Mac USERS GROUP?
From: wysiwyg
Date: 29 Oct 00 - 04:56 PM

God help me, I've got a Mac on the way. And I SORT OF know WINDOWS by now.

1. What do you have, and for how long?

2. Would you consider yourself a beginner user, or intermediate, or advanced, or a paid expert?

3. What are the best Mudcat threads you recall on Mac-related concerns, if any?

4. Got any good Mac links to share here or in the Mudcat LINKS section?

5. You gonna help me out? What can I do for you in exchange?

6. Am I going to burn in hell as a result of this decision to convert, or will I find I'm more SAVED than ever??

I need to know.

~Susan

Praise, don't sweat too much. Remember that Billy Gates stole his Windows from the original Mac OS. It serves both companies to keep them similar. They are not that different. Instead of a start menu, you have a little apple, same concept.

I haven't really ever used a Mac. I was a bit nervous 2 weeks ago when I was hired to teach a web design class IN A MAC LAB. About 5 minutes of pushing buttons and just fooling around, I figured it out. No sweat... but then again, I am a computer genius.

The right click (windows) can be accomplished on a Mac by holding the (only) mouse button in for a second or two or by holding the control key and clicking.

Excuse me, but the system Praise is procuring has with it a Kensington programmable rollerball with four keys which provide 6 directly programmable key clicks (two of them from combining 'chords") which can be tailored to suit the needs of the user; and as for keyboard shortcuts, they are there as a convenience, a lesson which Microsoft quickly borrowed from Apple in its early effort to catch up once it realized there WAS something to this GUI business after all.

In additon her system has on it software which can emulate a 486 Windows 98 platform to accomodate those close-minded regressives who are only in it for the bucks or who haven't yet gotten up to fulfilling their promises such as Hearme.

Her system also has complete drop-down contextual menus which provide all the convenience needed.

Regards,

Amos

Max is right - they aren't that different.

My dad uses a Mac and sometimes I find it frustrating because, whilst I know Windows pretty well, some things on the Mac are in different places. But they are there. Just takes a bit of time to find them.

I really can't understand those who say that Macs are totally wonderful, and that switching will produce 'computer nirvana.' If that were so, their market share would be a bit bigger...

Macs can be frustrating if you download a lot of software - you'll often find that what you want is only available for Windows. If you just want to do basic stuff, you'll find your way around really easily.

(The 'long' click vs the right click is quite intuative too)

Regards

Zeb

Um, Alice...DOS is a thing of the past now. Old DOS programs don't even run on Windows 97 machines. I've been forced to use Macs in the Art department. The extension thing is a real pain in the pockets.

The extension thing is a lot easier to handle than 360 "dll" files that get overwritten arbitrarily in obscure subdirectories with no notification. Windows would do well to hav a DLL Manager similar tot he Extensions Manager. Either way, small extension-like files (whether they are called libraries or not) have to be handled.

Praise....I think that having a Mac will make your mudcat life very frustrating. You will not be able to participate in 'hearme', nor will you be able to join the chat room during the radio show. You will be limited to mp3 files and you will find it difficult to buy or download software for your Mac. Yes, they are easy to use for the basics but I'm finding mine to be very limiting.

LL, we will be using Hardi's laptop for HearMe. It has been a concern. I think it will do radio though, I believe it has been doing radio for awhile in its present location. It also has a lot of sound software I have seen in use. I hope it will at least end my frustrration about not having a reliable unit to write from. That's the main thing right now.

You can download install and run Hearme on the system Praise is getting. Maybe no-one noticed the post upstairs -- it has a complete emulator which runs Windows.

As for only mp3 files, I am at a loss for words -- what could you mean? What format file would you possibly want to handle that can't be handled on this set-up? name one! Oh...maybe Microsoft Project 2000. Well, unless you run in emulation mode.

I'm telling you, she's getting the best of both worlds; the only thing better would be a G4 Dual Processor system, such as the one I'm writing this from...

Amos, HearMe sez now that it needs Pentium to run on, and won't run on a 486. Isn't the emulator a 486 emulator? I'se confoozed. What about all the people who say their Mac won't run HearMe? Is this a new approach?

Does that mean you can run HearMe now too? Hold the phone!! Amos can do HearMe????????????????? Huh!! Holding out or what???

I'se so confoozed!

But I still want my Mac!

Oh and Amos. It's OK. Take it easy. No need to get your panties in a wad (do men DO that???). It's a user group thread, not a user rant! (Just kidding! Every cat thread is a rant at some point!) How about, "Forgive them for they know not what they criticize." ??? Remember, it just needs a good marketing plan. You know once I am up and running I just may have a few ideas on that... hmm, maybe the positive approach would work... naw, way too simple, could never work... that love thing, can't last long.... wal but it's been workin' pretty good for me in some other areas... I do need a new job... hmmm... is that a big enough challenge for me... then I could trade up to the dual processor rig myself... those sound sticks, yeah!!!! Heal what ails... hafta sleep on it. Yuh. Leave it to me. Stay cool, man.

Praise,
I've been using Macs since 1986 and have never felt hard-done-by. The new machines are blisteringly fast, and with an emulator programe like Soft Windows or Virtual PC you'll be able to run the few programs that don't port for the Mac (and both emulators run at Pentium equivalent).
You'll also have the advantage of running programs that Wintel folk don't have, like the Mac versions of the Digital Tradition and abc programs like BarFly, which knock the socks off anything comparable on the other platform. At the end of the day, both systems have their fanatical adherents, both will do most of what you want and both will drive you mad.
Given a choice, I'd stick with my Macs, though.
And any problems you encounter, just PM me and I'll do what I can or point you in the right direction.

ICQ has a version for Macs. Go to their product page. As far as being limited to MP3 - it's my understanding that Macs can handle just about any sound files PCs can. (RealAudio, MIDI, .wav (?).) Am I wrong?

I just keep getting messages that say I don't have the program to translate blah blah blah ... same with music files that people send to me... I can't play them unless they're in a Mp3 format. Would someone please tell what an emulator is?

I used Real Audio long before I used MP3's on my Mac, and it is a system I bought in 1997, just upgrading it to System 8.6 last year. Macs have been the preferred choice of many musicians and artists for quite some time. No problem with sound files, and if I had a G4, I could get into HearMe.

I use PCs and Macs. They're not that different. They both go wrong.

First thing you need to know is that "command" (the button with an apple and a kind of curly H-like thing on it) does a lot of the same things that "control" does on a PC - cmd-p prints just as ctrl-p prints on a PC, cmd-a selects all, just as ctrl-a does.

You don't have right-clicking buttons (unless you buy a programmable mouse) but holding down the alt key at the same time as clicking the mouse does most of the same things.

Macs have *much more polite* error messages, but their errors are just as annoying.

And don't worry - there are a lot of helpful Mac users (as well as helpful PC users) on Mudcat.

Hearme is no problem for me on the Mac - apart from the fact that the G4s are in the office, and I haven't got the bottle to sit in the office singing to a machine, however sexy it looks!
The machine I lug around with me most of the time is an iBook, which is a great piece of kit apart from the fact that it doesn't have a mike hole (or whatever the hole you plug your mike into is called), and I can't yet be arsed to get the USB dongle that functions as a mike hole.
Unfortunately the G3 PowerBook, which would work wonderfully for Hearme almost anywhere, is on semi-permament loan to a colleague who lost his usual laptop under the wheels of a cycle courier. Berk!
However, another is on its way. One day, then...let this be an awful warning (as any who have heard me sing will testify!) As for music files - there are any number of programs that'll play them, from Apple's own QuickTime, through Audion (about the best for MP3s), Sound Jam (there's both a free and shareware version), and SoundApp, which will let you play and fiddle around with virtually any sound format.
Let's face it - Macs were made for making music; leave PCs to the number crunchers and the anoraks!

Cobble I too use macs every day of the year for my job. And have used them for the past 8 years.

I LOVE MAC's

I LOVE MY G4

I'm a MAC SNOB too and really don't like pc's very much at all. I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole...

Have just been asked by the works IT section if I would consider going to pc's as there are only 4 of us in the whole organisation that uses them. And the IT support don't have a clue about us - we have to tell them what is wrong.

I had to be scraped off the floor - there is no way I would swap over...

So, don't worry they are really really easy to use. They were designed originally for an 8 year old to be able to just sit down and use straight away.

TOP BANANA!

Yes, I think different(ly), too. Apple's 'think different' slogan still bugs me. They say it is supposed to be "think... 'different'", but they have still been annoyed by the grammar police. My main Mac that I am using is not an Apple - it's a Motorola Starmax, ...really different.

I have not looked into exactly qhat it emulates.. I believe it is comaparable to 486 performance. The main reason I haven't gotten into HearMe is because (a) I haven't found time to get it set up and (b)I have a huge weakness for sitting around singing, and it would burn up even more time!
