Subject: RE: Origins: Oranges and Lemons (say the bells of...) From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 27 Nov 18 - 06:47 AM Further to the link above - the provision of the oranges and, then, lemon cake was funded by a legacy - 'Holborn Estate Legacy'. The same legacy that founded St Clement Danes Grammar School - which I went to in the 70s. I have some more in-depth details somewhere which I will try to find over the next couple of weeks. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Oranges and Lemons (say the bells of...) From: EBarnacle Date: 27 Nov 18 - 01:56 PM I suspect that there is something missing here. A book I read recently mentioned that decapitation was reserved for high crimes and the upper classes. Why would the "chopper to chop off your head" be included in a list of bells tolling on the way to an execution? Perhaps there is a more concrete historical tie. |
