Everyone has songs with particular associations; I'm thinking more of unavoidable baggage that comes with the tune or words...

For instance, "Shattered" (not folk, OK) encapsulates my entire Freshman year in college. I can almost smell the coffee from the machines at Eaton...And there are other songs I can't hear without a whole mess o'associations coming up. I can't hear the Weavers' version of (not the title) Brother Can You Spare a Dime without remembering a particular conversation about the depression I had with my Dad when I was probably about 14... and so on. What are your strongestly-associated songs? Just curious...

DaveO nearly reduced me to tears at his Hearme concert with a song about the "Nightingale". A while back,someone sang it to me and changed Phyllis to Mary. I thought I was past the hurt but ...

And "The Bird in a Gilded Cage" always brings to mind Aunt May and the day she bobbed her and sisters' hair (hair which my grandfather had not allowed to be cut since birth). Then got them involved in the filming of some silent movies. "The Alabaster Box' was one. I would kill for a copy of it. And the alligator lamp with a red light in its mouth designed to scare the crap out of unsuspecting suitors. There's more but you get the idea.

"Chiquitita" by ABBA. I'd just been released from the army and I had just fallen in love with a girl that still haunts me and the whole world seemed open for me when this song was played over and over and over and...

When I hear it today, I just can't help feeling some kind of ... err ... *gulp* - do you know what I mean?

No deep contemplation with this, just the experience of being reminded of the feeling of being HAPPY.

Too many to list. I try not to listen to stuff I like when I'm going through a bad time, so I don't ruin it for myself in the future. It took me too long to figure this out.

Works the other way too - every time you phone a helpline or a complaint line and they put you on hold, they seen to play Vivaldi's Four Sesons, and then forget you. Lovely piece, but now every time I hear it anywhere I get this irritated feeling associated with the phone waits.

I wouldn't know where to start on this one. Sometimes a song brings up a specific so vivid you are taken to an exact time and place....even a particular moment. I've got a few like that...........

John Gothard singing "You Won't Get Me Down in Your Mine", a capella, ca 1974, Victoria Folk Music Society, absolutely riveting performance that coloured my feelings for years after.

"Runaway", Del Shannon, first boyfriend, rampant passion and zest for life, still can't hear the opening notes of the music of that song, forty years later, without the old familiar rush.

"Money for Nothing", Dire Straits, same rush, much different circumstances and memories, way too personal to relate.

Oh Geez, where do I start!

Rod Stewart - You're in my heart = Paul, my first love, who was drowned when we were both 18.....

Hazel O'Connor - Stay now (the one from Breaking Glass, with the incredible sax solo) = David, whom I dated for about 3 years , waited another 2 years for, thought he'd been killed in China (so did the British Embassy!) and mourned for a year.... He reappeared, safe and well and married.....

The Cuckoo Waltz - every answerphone I call has this thing on it and I loathe it for the same reasons quoted for Vivaldi above.

Everything possible - Roy Bailey singing it = Phoebe. I sang her this as her lullaby for the first year of her life, and I hope she takes the words to heart.
