Subject: OBIT: Norma Sweet has passed away

This morning around 10:00 Noma Sweet passed away. Norma was know as Granny Sweet. She was a fiddler and a teacher of fiddle to countless children and grownups in Central New York. Norma taught fiddle in the Hannibal NY library every thursday night for more years than I can recall. As much a lesson as a Jam, everyone got to play. And she was a wealth of tune knowledge that will be missed. As I recall she loved to play swing fiddle. She called them old pop tunes but they were the piano bench sings that people sat about and played and sang from when she was a child. An Old Timey style from a more elegant age.

Norma wasn't widely known beyond our area but her students are and will be.

Don, sorry to hear about her passing. Do the Dady Brothers and the Flying Column know? All the best. Seamus

Don, that is so sad. I am sure everyone will miss her, but especially the children. My mom and dad played some of those tunes, as that is what they grew up with; you are right, they did come from a more elegant age. I am sorry to see them pass out of memory through such loss; hopefully her students will keep them alive. She must have been an extraordinary woman.

I wish I'd met her. The best way to honor her memory, I think, is to follow her example; to play the music for the love of it, to share it without necessarily looking to make a living at it, or to get famous from it.
