What a shame that when someone came to make a radio programme about their language they didn't have a song from their own culture to sing.
No wonder the language is becoming extinct.

That sort of confirms my feelings about the origins. When I heard the lady singing the English version, I thought it was pretty obvious that it was a country song, and had been written in English originally.

The song "When the White Azaleas Start Blooming," was written by Frank Luther (Crow), 1899-1980.

(sometimes attributed to Bob Miller).
Luther also wrote "The Old Spinning Wheel" and "Seven Years with the Wrong Woman."
His wife, Zora Layman, had a hit with Bob Miller's orchestra and his "Seven Years with the Wrong Man."

See Wikipedia article, Frank Luther.

Yes, I heard that too. I assumed it was a song from that tradition, who borrowed from whom?

11 years after ... i have just heard this song on BBC radio 4 today sung in its original language. I didn't hear which language it was but it sounded an obscure one - perhaps a native American language?

Here is the text of White Azaleas as recorded by country singer George Morgan, some time in the 1950's:

When the white azaleas start blooming
I'll come back to you
When spring's in the air
With its freshness so rare
We'll make our dreams come true

When the white azaleas start blooming
Up in the mountains so high
We'll build a nest
Where we'll find happiness
Sweetheart for only you and I

That's it, just two verses. I don't know if there's more that Morgan didn't sing. The song appears on an old Columbia LP titled, "Morgan, by George!" on Columbia. (Late '50's) Authorship is indeed attributed to Bob Miller.

George Morgan was a rather talented, mellow-voiced and very under-appreciated country singer whose career covered the late forties into the early sixties (I think). He's best known for his theme song, "Candy Kisses" which he wrote and recorded in 1948. That song was recorded by many others and I think was a crossover hit in the pop music field. I don't know if any of Morgan's recordings have made it onto CD.

Regards,
John

A web search indicates that "When the White Azaleas Start Blooming" is attributed to Bob Miller (1933) and was recorded by Louise Massey and the Westerners in 1934. It has also been recorded by Bing Crosby, the Swift Jewel Cowboys, Rex & Noelene Franklin, and Wilf Carter. Paul Smith recorded a song that he called "When the White Azaleas Bloom" - this may be a variant title. I seem to recall a version recorded by Eddy Arnold in the 50's but I am unable to confirm this.

I have been unable to find the lyrics in text form, but I found these sites that let you download sound samples:

T. Texas Tyler.

The Johnson Family Singers.
