Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Strupag Date: 15 Feb 03 - 07:00 AM Hi Just come across this thread whilst I'm listening to, probably, the best programme in the world. It's in the Scottish Gaelic language but the music is very eclectic. It's called Tiompan and the presentor is Maggie MacLennan and it's on BBC Radio Nan Gaidhail which is on the Sky 920(if you are in UK/Ireland) and is on the web at the BBC Radio site. Sadly it's now just finished but do yourself a favour and listen next week Saturday between 11 - 12 GMT Andy |

Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: GUEST,Chris Jones Date: 12 Nov 00 - 08:06 AM I just found out about the folkscene mess one hour after I wrote that message. There is information on the whole thing at www.folkscene.com. I wrote to Ros and Howard and will help them with $$ if needed -- they are great people. KPFK may have some legitimate legal concerns, but after 30 years of helping KPFK, this is no way to treat the Larmans. Nevertheless, Ben Elder's and John Cavis's show on Sat am are very good. And Liz Burkett in on Sundays on worldmusic with bluegrass. |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Mike Regenstreif Date: 11 Nov 00 - 10:53 AM Richie, The Thursday 9-11:30 am (Eastern time)broadcast of Folk Roots/Folk Branches corresponds to 2-4:30 pm in London, England. Archiving is still down the road. John, Unfortunately, FolkScene, Howard & Roz Larman's program, is still off the air at KPFK. Mike Regenstreif |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: John Hindsill Date: 11 Nov 00 - 10:31 AM GUESTChris: Thanks for the tip on Lou Curtiss. I used to buy used folk music from him in the 1980s; started my Calypso collection, there. Are you sure about the Larmans & KPFK? They had a contretemps with the station and had ceased broadcasting. Have they patched up their quarrel and returned? I have not so heard---John |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: GUEST,Chris Date: 11 Nov 00 - 07:18 AM Thanks for all the great suggestions - also, check out worldmusicradio.org on weekends from San Diego - especially Lou Curtiss' show - and he is on again on Sunday nights on sdsu. Also, kpfk.org in LA is beginning to stream and has John Davis on Sat am and the fantastic Folkscene with Ros and Howard Larman on Sunday night. Who would have guessed that the best use of the internet is to replace Muzak? |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: BlueJay Date: 11 Nov 00 - 04:56 AM I really like Hober's mix of acoustic music, a really wide variety. Lot's of nice surprises here. I'm listening to "Swing '42" by David Grisman and Tony Rice right now. I especially like Hober's feature of listing the song, artist and album of what's being played at the time, which has just changed to "Blackbird" by Gordon Bok. Plus, you can click and see what the last ten songs played were. Definitely one of the best radio stations on the net, right up there with Mudcat Radio. Thanks, BlueJay |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Ritchie Date: 11 Nov 00 - 04:17 AM At the moment, Mike, I'm listening via the internet to some 'rap' but it's 9.15 am in the UK, so in Montreal ? Nice playlist, I'll try and work out when I can Listen, but what's the chance of archiving the show ? regards ritchie. |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Mike Regenstreif Date: 07 Nov 00 - 10:54 AM I like Folk Roots/Folk Branches on Thursday mornings from 9-11:30 (Eastern). But, then again, it's my show. There's lots of info on the show and the link to listen in RealAudio on the Folk Roots/Folk Branches site. Mike Regenstreif |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Ritchie Date: 07 Nov 00 - 10:44 AM hey how hard is it to set up an internet radio site ? I've got loads of music that people should be listening to. My favourite site is run by Charlie Gillett on wen radio. Ritchie 'open your ears, open your mind' |

Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: GUEST,Russ Date: 07 Nov 00 - 09:53 AM There's gold amidst the dross at www.live365.com. My personal favorites are "Appalachian Old Time Throwdown" and "Rat's Won't Stay Where There's Music - Old Time Music" |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Jon Freeman Date: 06 Nov 00 - 10:08 PM Praise, I think that was the one I listened to 2 shows after the mandolin concert on the site Alice gave a link for. Some good stuff... I must remember this Sunday to tune into the Celtic show at www.wfdu.fm. 7am works out as 12pm for me - quite a good time of day for me. Better give www.hober.com a clicky too. I tuned in for a bit yesterday and enjoyed it. Jon |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: wysiwyg Date: 06 Nov 00 - 09:42 PM I think these should all go, along with WFMT-FM Chicago's weekly Midnight Special, into the LINKS section, too, but someone else'll have to put them in. If you do, please search out the URL for WFMT. It's good stuff, longtime tenure in the folk world. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Ron Olesko Date: 06 Nov 00 - 07:27 PM Yes, we are in the Eastern Time Zone. As long as Bill mentioned our show together - TRADITIONS, I would also like to mention another show that I do - THE SUNDAY SESSION. Every Sunday morning at 7am ET I host THE SUNDAY SESSION which features Celtic music. Tune in via www.wfdu.fm Enough plugs!!! :) Ron |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Jeri Date: 06 Nov 00 - 06:42 PM Jon, it looks like WFDU is in New York. Same time zone (EST) as Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Jon Freeman Date: 06 Nov 00 - 06:36 PM Bill, that is 3-6pm in what time zone and if it is not Mudcat Time (EST), how does it compare to that time or GMT? Jon |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Bill Hahn//\\ Date: 06 Nov 00 - 06:23 PM You may consider this shameless self promotion, but Ron Olesko and myself (Bill Hahn) think you would enjoy weekends on WFDU---especially Sundays from 3-6 PM when we air the TRADITIONS program. All genres of folk are the substance---along with some great interviews. We are on the web: www.wfdu.fm Bill Hahn WFDU's longest running program---over 20 years. |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Sourdough Date: 06 Nov 00 - 12:05 PM I tried Hober and was amazed by how tasteful the selection of music is. It is not all traditional but it is as they say in their description, all "handmade" music. Their criterion is that it is music that a group of musicians getting together in a field could play without resorting to effects or electricity. It is a broader collection of music that I would think I would want to listen to but there is something about listening to Lightnin'Hopkins follwed by Billie Holiday that helps to remind me about the variety of music that is around. I listen through a 56k modem which usually connects between 45-50k. THe sound quality is wonderful. Sourdough |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: John Hindsill Date: 05 Nov 00 - 01:19 PM Thanks for trying, Joe, but those links don't seem to want to work. The folkscare address IS wrong (blush, blush); it should be: www.zipcon.net/~highroad/tgfs.html ---John My mistake - I should have added http:// to what you had given - corrected now - sorry JoeClone

Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: John Hindsill Date: 05 Nov 00 - 11:34 AM Thanks for the tip; I'm going to try that site later today.
Here are two that I listen to:
www.wumb.org/wumb2.html - Somebody posted this one here some time ago.
www.zipcon.com/~highroad/tgfs.html - This is a part of the Folkscare site, and, strictly speaking, isn't a radio site. They do play a melange of 60's folkmusic.
I can't do links. Perhaps Joe Offer or ? can do it.

Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: thosp Date: 04 Nov 00 - 09:16 PM i've been listening to Hober for about a year --- although it's not 100% folk ---- i think it's the best station on the net (and maybe off the net) it's mix is great -- and i've heard more old timey there then anyplace else --- let me stop before you start to think i work for them |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Internet Radio From: Mark Clark Date: 04 Nov 00 - 08:25 PM Chris, Thanks for posting this, I'd never heard of Hober. This seems to be a pretty serious effort. Nice music and it seems like they expect to remain stable. - Mark |
Subject: Best Folk Internet Radio? From: GUEST,Chris Date: 04 Nov 00 - 06:29 PM Being able to listen to folk music on internet radio is great. Has anybody tried Hober.com? Are there better sites for traditional folk music? |
