Subject: Lyr Add: OH BOY DANNY (parody of DANNY BOY)
From: jeffp
Date: 04 Nov 00 - 06:35 PM

Here's yet another parody of Danny Boy, written over several pints by myself and a good friend, Peter Benson, a local folksinger originally from Yorkshire.

OH BOY, DANNY
Peter Benson and Jeff Porterfield

Oh, Danny boy, they claim that you are Irish
But we both know you're English through and through
And if you really want to know what I wish
I truly wish that I had never heard of you
'Cause every March they make me sing about you
And every drunkard thinks that he can too
And when they miss that high note it's so painful
That if you heard it I think it would kill you too

Oh, Danny boy, when Irish eyes were smiling
It was before they ever heard of you.
In Galway Bay the tides are still retiring
Because that song you caused has made them blue.
So don't come back in summer or in springtime
Don't show your face at state or county fair.
Some drunken sot will sing your praises loudly;
And we find that we must ban your Derry air.

So Danny boy, we'll raise our glasses to you.
And thank the Lord you've left for God knows where.
Black Velvet Band is being sung in lieu of you,
And we would rather go to Hell for her.
But we remember how you raised our glasses,
And made our voices ring the whole night long.
So Danny boy, although we love you dearly
Hit the road and take your misbegotten song.

Hope you like it.

jeffp

(lots o giggles)--Very good Jeff, and quite a realistc picture! I vote we replace 'Danny Boy' with the Pogues version of 'Young Ned of the Hill' as our official St. Pat's day song...all that cursin' Oliver Cromwell to hell an all...really makes ya want to DRINK!

Good lyrics.

Another nice one for the "Murdered Collection", Jeffp
Keep em comin' ----I reckon the genre really started with Tom Lehrer's "The Irish Ballad" - in the DT, Here, I hope ---- not based on any particular song, but parodying the style.

Calach,
Post your "Panda" song as Lyr Add. Just keep it away from Panda Smith, who was miraculously (for you!) absent at last Monday's meeting.
For those who ain't seen the songs mentioned, they're HERE

Subject: Lyr Add: Oh Danny Boyle
From: Nigel Parsons
Date: 31 Jul 12 - 07:21 AM

OH DANNY BOYLE
words: Nigel Parsons

Oh Danny Boyle, that start was a sensation.
It 'raised the bar' for any future games.
You showed the best of our island nation,
There was no need to employ famous names. (the Queen excepted!)
You showed our nightmares with the 'Child-Catcher'
Safe in their beds, the children were not caught.
A wave from Churchill, not from Maggie Thatcher.
And so our only other dread was Voldemort!

You raised a scene of England in its idyll.
Maypoles & cricket on the village green.
Then, up above, you built a 'dark satanic mill'.
Ideas too broad to fit a tv screen.
But come you back, at last, when games are ending.
We hope Kim Gavin* does as well as you.
As onto Rio our goodwill we're sending.
As we all stop, and pause, and bid the Games "Adieu!"

*Artistic Director for the closing ceremony.

Cheers
Nigel

Previously posted 'below the line'. Where the thread quickly dropped out of view, and where some people 'just don't go'.

Cheers
