This is all I have been able to find out: the song "Bell, Book & Candle" was written by Boo Hewerdine. It was recorded by Eleanor Shanely on her album "Desert Heart" (1997), by Eddi Reader on her album "Angels and Electricity" (1998), and by Boo Hewerdine on his album "Thanksgiving" (1999).

The phrase "Bell, Book & Candle" refers to the Roman Catholic rite of excommunication, but in popular culture it has become confused with witchcraft and exorcism. John van Druten wrote a play by that name about witches.

According to my trusty 1981 edition of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and fable, Bell, book and candle is the popular phrase signifying excommunication by the Roman Catholic Church. After pronouncing sentence the bell was tolled as for one dead; the bible, the book of life, was closed; and the candle, signifying the soul, was extinguished. There seems to be some confusion in the song-writer's mind between this and exorcism, but we mustn't let that spoil a haunting song (sorry, couldn't resist the pun!).
