Well, gang, it appears that the correct answer to the question is: "NOBODY WILL WIN IT ON TUESDAY". It is likely to be a few days before Florida's count is officially determined.

My newspaper this morning has the following quotes:

If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure."

"I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future."

And it says they were made by Gore!!

Perhaps we'll hear later that they were said by Hilary Clinton, or Mel Carnahan or the Pope or Bob Dylan

Jeri- very interesting. As you can see by the botched post I cut and pasted something I was sent. Sounds like someone is getting double mileage out of idiocies!

If those two ran for office together, would the slogan be "Under every Bush is a Quayle"? Or 'Every Quayle needs a Bush"?

Ebbie

J. Danforth Quayle said:
"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure."
"I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future."
"I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and democracy - but that could change." (May 2, 89.)
"One word sums up probably the responsibility of any Governor, and that one word is 'to be prepared'." (Dec 6 89)
Now this could be a case of simple misattribution or - and this is scary - is Bush stealing lines from Dan Quayle?!?!

I have done my civic duty and fought through the ravening horde of about 15 people to vote. (Well, I think we only have about 3,000 residents.)

I say we put them all on Pulau Tiga for a month.

WITH Richard *snicker* And maybe Susan, just for good measure.

Whichever one of them manages to withstand that sort of torture deserves to be president. ;)

How about we put all the candidates in the woods -someplace dark and swampy- with a gun and whoever survives, wins. It would be cheap (ammo is not expensive) and it would cut down on the number of politicians, which is always a good thing.

We may disagree about who's approach to governing is most effective but we don't have to be enemies. And I thought that was what all these discussions were supposed to be about. Not unsubstantiated allegations. Not personal attacks (particularly on each other). Not about name calling and empty rhetoric. But there I go, preaching just like my candidate (but please don't call me Al).

I made my prediction after the last debate; I said it would be Gore unless there was some kind of surprise. I know the OUI was considered surprising to some, but I don't think it moved anyone out of one column and into another. I still believe that a majority or the undecideds will decide not to change things and pick Gore.

There are two things that I find interesting about this election. If you compare candidates from this election and the last, it's pretty clear that Bob Dole was more qualified than George W. and Bill Clinton has more negative baggage than Al G. So, if the Dem candidate is better this election than last and if the Repub is worse this time than last, and the Dems won big last time, why. . .??? I don't understand how this election could be in doubt.

#2 (pun intended)For the past couple elections, it's been the democrats who have had to hold their nose and vote for their man. This year it's the Republicans. We need to find a better way to pick our leaders.

How it will go??...................Oh well, what the hell. I have been dead in this since last December so here is my prediction. It is so razor thin, but I will tell you what I think. By my count Gore has 168 electoral votes sown up, Bush has 205. Among the tossup states I believe my guy will win Arkansas (squeeker), Florida (what a surprise!!), Iowa, Michigan (how could he lose with the brainpower he has here....LOL), Minnesota, Missouri (Carnahan factor), New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin. This will put him at 302 electoral votes. There are a couple of them there that others don't agree with me on, but let's see what happens.

And remember folks, The Only Good Republican is an Irish Republican LOL

Die is cast, work is done, what will be will be. I am tired and glad it is over. See ya tomorrow.

If this thread is an indication of how American voters feel, whoever wins may perform above most peoples' expectations. I hope so. I hope that Americans get a better president than they expect. Being born rich, having a concern about the companies that fuel the economy, having previous experience in government, these things don't make candidates worse humans than you or I. Well I can't speak for you but…

We have several decent leaders in the upcoming Canadian federal election. Even the right wing bastard seems like a reasonable enough fellow. Our previous leader may have told a few lies but he's a hoot, loud and folksy, like Chuck and Sandytoes, although I don't think Chuck and Sandytoes tell lies. Our left wing party is lead by a woman born into a rich family. She seems to be genuinely interested in people. Her biggest problem is that she is too nice so voters don't take her seriously. A fourth party is lead by a right wing nice guy. His party was once one of the top two parties in Canada but now he has it on its death bed. He's been around Canadian politics for a long time and, in my mind, he has consistently been a loser. He probably represents Canadians better than the other leaders, since we are a country of losers, but most of us don't want to admit that in a voting booth. We'd rather pretend that we a bright and sophisticated and suave and superior to most of the folks who run for office.

John Travolta told Rob Reiner something like, 'When we were good we were never as good as they though we were and when we were bad we were never as bad as they thought we were.' We might keep that in mind when we cut up those people with enough public spirit to represent the wild and outrageous views of their constituents.

What I find interesting are the Zogby & other polls that have shown for months and still show that over two-thirds of the American electorate categorically opposes the planks- individually or collectively- in the Republican platform. Yet the race is still 50/50?

I fear we will be waking Wednesday to a Pres. Dubya as long as the voters can be this mindless & see no connection between Dubya & his party's agenda.

Hope I'm wrong, tho- Greg

Before I predict, let me say a few things-First, it didn't take a rocket scientist to pick the last election--and, for all of you who comment on the fact that we have two rich boys to chose from, don't forget that last time, we had two poor boys to choose from--

Next, GW's only claim to fame is that he is the son of a president that we voted out of office, he has no major issues, and the economy is great--Gore has made no major mistakes, and there is no Willie Horton ad (GW, incidentally, was the driving force behind that)

Pretend that you never heard word one about any polls, who would you pick? And remember that the only polls that count are the ones where people vote--

All that said, I pick Gore--and by a surprising margin--(Bush may fall as low as 37%, which is the magic number that Bush Sr. hit(if I remember correctly) and Bob Dole (the only presidential candidate to publically acknowledge what most of us suspected--that Republicans can't get it up), and corresponds to the approximate percentage of registered Republicans--

California will go Gore--forget that Bush spent 5 million on TV ads, remember Michael Huffington! Florida will go Gore, as will Michigan and PA--

Ralph Nader will fall way short of his 5%,(I say about 2%), but the Green Party will elect a number of local candidates, most noteably in DC, which will make DC statehood a hot issue--

After this, the crystal is dark again--

Well, still not many real predictions, LEJ, Doug, Ebbie and DB (DB 'a c**t hair' - what the hell is that, or do I even want to know). So, I looked in at the top three polls this morning:

** Zogby (MSNBC/Reuters is a popular opinion poll) says Bush 46 and Gore 44
** Battleground Poll (a poll aimed at most likely voters) says Bush 46 and Gore 37
** Portrait of America (a poll aimed at "best cross section" of voters) says Bush 48 and Gore 41

While each of these polls has earned respect for measuring popular opinion, Battleground Poll has the best track record for accurate predictions. It looks like the polls are thinking like us; it's hard to call - but it may be that Ebbie is right.

Anyway, it's bound to be some American...

But I'd just love to see the winner walk up to the mike when the results have been declared, and he says "Fooled ya, didn't I?"

Whatever happens, remember the 20 year rule means that one that gets elected this time is due to die in office (well Regan technically didn't...)
