Anyone care to explain to me what is with "Killing the Thread?" I guess I understand the title reference--how you can say something purposefully or inadvertently, that shuts down discussion on a topic--but why is it up to 400+ posts without a sequel? Something that long, I ain't gonna open with my backwoods modem connection.

Willie-O, In case you can't read it, the original post by Allan C was:

So you cleverly (you think) worded your finest thoughts on the subject of the thread and after a final glance, you pushed the "Submit" button. And then you watch to see if your addition to the discussion promotes further comments. And you watch. And you watch. And the thread meanders ever closer to the bottom of the forum page. Then it sinks into oblivion. Was it something you did? Was it something about the way you worded your last posting? What happened?

...Does this scene seem familiar to anyone else?

After a while, it got a little bit silly with several people deciding that they were going to have the last word and therefore be the one who killed the thread (at least that's my interpretation).

I guess that a part 2 would have spoilt the fun and probably would have killed it off long before 400+ posts had been made.

Jon

You have more or less outlined the original topic. I honestly had no idea what a terrible can of worms I opened when I began that thread. Now it has become a travesty that is being perpetuated by people who are determined to have the last word. It is now an exercise in stubbornness.

No, leave it well alone, Willie-O. Allan C started it, in all innocence, with a thought much in line with what you guessed - wondering how he had inadvertently put the kiss of death on some good threads (as most of us have done). It had became a self-perpetuating joke (increasingly unfunny) when I saw it last (around the 150 posts mark) with endless suggestions on how to kill it. There will be many who contributed, including me, who hope it never sees light again. As for Allan C, I expect that Max and the Joe clones have put a price on his head by now. Don't know where they can transport him to, though. He's already in Australia.

It wasn't your fault Allan. I thought the question was a good one.

Maybe the thread wranglers could change the title to "Thread for Catters with too much time on their hands". Thanks guys, this has been puzzling me for weeks. At least, when I have time to worry about it.

But of course the competitive asshole in me wants to know: who are the finalists?

That's pretty ironic that it would end up being "the thread that wouldn't die."

Well, better I go split firewood.

Cheers

While Alan of Australia is safely away in another hemisphere, Allan C is close enough (in South Carolina?) to Mudcat Central to be worried - if Max were the type to get upset, that is. S'not Allan's fault that 433 posts were made though.

Actually Fionn, Allan C. is in West (By God) Virginia.

Willie, its now simply a joke. Many of us have offered to let Max wipe it out, but he hasn't because he too is a bit warped. It disappears for awhile and then someone being ornery opens it back up. There was a sort of agreement at one point that "IT" was the ONLY thread we would run....NO PART 2's!!!!

Will it ever go away? Probably not. The group seems to have a few core members, but there are others who decide to join in or drop out now and then, so...........

Ignore it......We're all assholes.

In some ways I'd rather be in Australia. But I have always been able to enjoy wherever it is that I am at the moment.

Fortunately, I am so far back in the sticks that Max might never find me. I'm not too worried though. He passed up a good opportunity for retribution when we were both at the Getaway.

I don't really feel guilty about starting that thread because Father Joe has granted me absolution.

What will you bet that this thread will bring up that thread again?

Allan C, your remark reminds me of a biblical verse my very-much-against-her-will newly-relocated aunt wrote on the outside of a mailed envelope: I have learned in whatsoever state I'm in therewith to be content.

Ebbie

Far be it from me to post here simply in the hopes it will be the last post.

(P.S.--no further posts are required on this thread.)
