Subject: LYR ADD: SKINNAMARINK
From: Peter T.
Date: 04 Sep 97 - 05:22 PM

As requested:

SKINNAMARINK
(Sharon, Lois, & Bram)

Skinnamarinkydinkydink
Skinnamarinkydoo
I - Love - You!!

Skinnamarinkydinkydink
Skinnamarinkydoo
I - Love - You!!

I love you in the morning and in the afternoon
I love you in the evening, underneath the moon
Skinnamarinkydinkydink
Skinnamarinkydoo
I - Love - You!!

(final add. phrase:)
Skinnamarinkydoo, I - Love - You -- Too!!
(Boop, boop, ee-doo)

Chords (slash each line): G Gdim/G Gdim/ G Gdim D7/
Am7 D7 /Am7 D7/ Am7 D7 G/ (D7) G G7 C/A7 D D7/G Gdim/G E7/ A7 D7 G/ (final add. phrase:) G E7 A7 D7 G (D +7 G)

copyright 1985 by Grand Trunk Music: Sharon Hampson, Lois Lillienstein, and Bram Morrison.

The tune is a bit like a sliding vaudeville version of "Tea For Two", lots of rocking back and forth, canes out for the "I (beat, beat) Love (beat, beat) You". It is somewhat infectious (sort of like Barney vs. the Elephant (there is an Elephant on S, L, and Bram)). There are hand movements I have never learned, and I have never even seen the programme! I learned it at a campsing. I just know that when it is played, graduates of S,L, and B. light up and go to work. Vaudeville is not dead, it lives in the children's hour.
Yours, Peter

There is a french version of this as well. Any parents know the words? Don't forget the spider; he is WAY cool, sez the 4-year-old.

Come clean Peter, we know you're a Elephant fan -- I'm sure I've seen your profile on the Frosted Flakes commercial.

Subject: Lyr Add: "SKIDDY-MER-RINK-A-DOO" MEANS "I LOVE YOU
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 23 Nov 04 - 02:05 AM

From the sheet music at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music:

"SKIDDY-MER-RINK-A-DOO" MEANS "I LOVE YOU."*
"SKID-DY-MER-RINK-ADINK-ABOOMP" (Means I Love You)**
Words, Felix F. Feist. Music, Al Piantadosi. 1910
"Introduced in Chas. Dillingham's production of the American musical comedy 'The Echo' "

1. Down on a Boola Boola Isle,
Where the mermaids chant,
Reigns big chief Crocodile
Beneath an oyster plant.
He loved a sea-nymph selfishly,
Queen of the Gay White Wave.
Each night in his shell he'd go to sea
And in tuneful scales he'd rave:

CHORUS: Skiddy-mer-rink-a-dink-a-boomp, skiddy-mer-rink-a-doo,
Means I love you.
Skiddy-mer-rink-a-dink-a-boomp, skiddy-mer-rink-a-doo,
Means I'll be true
Skiddy-mer-rink-a-dink-a-boomp, skiddy-mer-rink-a-doo,
All the time he {sang/sings} this rhyme
Skiddy-mer-rink-a-dink-a-boomp, skiddy-mer-rink-a-doo,
Means I love you.

2. But when the midnight moon was pale,
King Fish Kokomo
Came floating over with his tale
To say he loved her so;
But she was true to Crocodile,
Said "Koko-Nut, go 'way;
I know, in a very little while
You will hear my lover say:" CHORUS

*Title as given on cover of sheet music, and as indexed by the Levy Collection.
**Title as given at the top of page 1 of the sheet music.

I had never heard this song until my granddaughter sang it at a nursing home last Valentine's Day. (She was 3 at the time.) She absolutely loves this song - maybe Joe was right - it appeals to the preschool, Barney crowd!

I've heard and sung this song all my life. The chorus is the same as you show here, but the lyrics are a little different. The version I know is as follows:

Skinnamarinky-dinky-dink!
Skinnamarinky-doo!
I LOVE YOU!

Skinnamarinky-dinky-dink!
Skinnamarinky-doo!
I LOVE YOU!

I love you in the morning
And I love you late at night.
I love you in the evening
When the moon is shining bright.

Ooooh! Skinnamarinky-dinky-dink!
Skinnamarinky-doo!
I LOVE YOU!

I love you.
Skinnamarinkydinkydink,
Skinnamarinkydo.
I love you.
I love you in the morning
And I love you in the night.
I love you when I'm with you
And I love you out of sight.
Etc.

Mrrzy. compared with most kids programmes of the time, it was brilliant - full of folky type songs and kiddy jokes and often educational as well as entertaining. And no violence!

I always thought it was from the song The Beggarman as sung by Tommy Makem. The fourth verse in part:

Over the road with my pack on my back,
Over the fields with my great heavy sack,
With holes in my shoes and my toes peeping through,
Singing, "Skinny-ma-rink-a doodle-o and old Johnny Dhu."

The note with the song to Tommy Makem's mother Sarah Makem, the book The Irish Songbook is copyright 1969. I have frequently heard the phrase quoted with this specific song cited as the source.

I thought I had proof read the thing before I submitted it. sorry.

This is what I have so far, and would be pleased if anyone can give me a fuller version.

Tiddly Winky Tiddly Winky Tiddly Winky Woo
I love you
Tiddly Winky Tiddly Winky Tiddly Winky Woo
Love me do

I love you in the morning
And I love you in the night
I love you in the evening when the stars are nice and bright (missing bit)

And now I've told you how I love you
In my own peculiar way
I want to nestle close beside you
And I want to hear you say...

(The song now repeats from the beginning)Tiddly Winky Tiddly Winky Tiddly Winky Woo
I love you (etc.)

I love you in the morning and in the afternoon
Please come down and spend the afternoon
A-skiddle-adinky-dinky-dink
A-skiddle-adinky-doo
I love you!

He sings it over and over again and it is so cute.

I think he may have made up the second line though.

Bram tells me that Skinnamarink is in the public domain - but that version is registered. I assume that means SOCAN (Canadian) whereby you can register arrangements of songs, not only authorship.

Skinny Malink or Skinny Marink - from Scottish dialect, very thin person or animal.
I was so thin, my mom called me a skinny marink my whole childhood. I thought it was a word her family made up.

Quotes from the OED and other sources:
Quote:
<1892 "Twa SKINAMALINKS o' the genus horse."—'Brechin Advertiser' (Scotland), 6 September

<1904 "Wee SKINA~MALINK craturs dottin' up the passages in U.F. kirks carryin' the books."—'Erchie, My Droll Friend' by H. Foulis (pseudonym for Scottish author Neil Munro), iii. page 15>

<1916 "SKINNY~MALINK, a very thin person. 'O, she's a regular SKINNY~MALINK.' Usage jocular."—'Dialect Notes IV' [[American Dialect Society]], page 289>
