There was a hit in the 50's about twins, caleed "20 tiny fingers, 20 tiny toes". Not that one?

And in 1982 a rather anti-royalist British poet (John Hegley?) penned the following:

Verses on the Birth of Prince William
Ten tiny fingers
Ten tiny toes
Ten thousand pounds a week
For life, I suppose

The one I remember from "Children's Favourites"/Uncle Mac on Saturday morning radio in the late 50's/early 60's (showing my age) was also 20 tiny fingers - think it was Doris Day or Alma Cogan who sang it.

Twenty tiny fingers, twenty tiny toes,

Two angel faces, each with a turned-up nose,

One looks like Mommy, with a cute little curl on top,

And the other one's got a big bald spot, exactly like his Pop, pop, pop, poppadop, pop, pop, pop, pop-pop..

And that was just the chorus!! A song about twins I do believe, unless my maths is wrong! Tattie B

Stargazers is right. Didn't Alma Cogan do "Where Will The Baby's Dimple Be?"?

Subject: Lyr Add: TEN LITTLE FINGERS AND TEN LITTLE TOES
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 29 Sep 10 - 04:02 PM

From the sheet music at Indiana University:

TEN LITTLE FINGERS AND TEN LITTLE TOES (DOWN IN TENNESSEE)
Words, Harrp Pease and Johnny White. Music, Ira Schuster and Ed. G. Nelson
New York: Leo Feist, Inc., 1921.

1. I met a pal from Tennessee,
And with a smile he greeted me,
For he was feeling happy, mighty snappy,
Jumping up and down with glee;
He got good news from home today,
And that's the reason he felt gay,
I thought it was simply great,
Just had to congratulate,
When I heard him say:

CHORUS: "I've got ten little fingers, and ten little toes,
Down in Tennessee, waiting there for me,
I never had a baby call me "Dada,"
How proud I know I'll be,
When I hear it calling me,
Oh gee! I'll kiss ev'ry finger,
I'll kiss ev'ry toe,
At Home Sweet Home I'll linger
for they'll need me there I know;
Although it only weighs ten pounds and just one day old,
I wouldn't give it up for all the world and its gold,
For I've got ten little fingers and ten little toes,
Waiting down in Tennessee for me."

2. He said, "I'm leaving town today,
I hope and pray there's no delay,
I'm going to get my ticket, double quick-it,
Not a thing could make me stay;
I long to see my little prize,
And look into those baby eyes,
Just try to imagine me,
Back home in old Tennessee,
Oh, what Paradise:

CHORUS: "I've got ten little fingers, and ten little toes,
Down in Tennessee, waiting there for me,
Oh, how I'll hold it, in my arms enfold it,
When night time shadows creep,
I will lull it fast asleep,
And then I'll count ev'ry finger,
I'll count ev'ry toe,
Close to his side I'll linger
For they'll need me there I know,
If he looks like his mother what a child he must be,
But if he looks like me then he's got my sympathy,
For I've got ten little fingers and ten little toes,
Waiting down in Tennessee for me."

Subject: Lyr Add: TWENTY TINY FINGERS (from Alma Cogan)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 30 Sep 10 - 05:31 PM

Lyrics copied from http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/radio/lyrics1.htm and checked against several sound samples.

TWENTY TINY FINGERS
Roy Bennett, Sid Tepper
As sung by Alma Cogan

CHORUS: Twenty tiny fingers, twenty tiny toes,
Two angel faces, each with a turned-up nose,
One looks like mommy, with a cute little curl on top,
And the other one's got a big bald spot exactly like his pop,
Pop, pop, pop-a-dop, pop, pop, pop-pop.

1. I put on the light in the middle of the night
And whispered, "Dear, let's go."
He grabbed a sock and called the doc.
He told me, "Don't be slow."
He got me there with time to spare
And then he sat on pins,
Until the doctor shook his hand
And told him, "You've got twins." CHORUS

2. We've got cribs and bottles and bibs,
All round our three-room flat,
No time to see what's on TV,
No room to swing a cat.
We're on the run; we're never done.
It's like a steeplechase.
Oh, they came in and they took over
Like they owned the place. CHORUS

3. Twice the laundry, twice the milk,
It's twice the baby clothes.
It's double this and double that.
Oh, how the money goes!
But Pa and me, we both agree,
When all is said and done,
We've got twice the blessings
And we've got twice the fun. CHORUS

Brilliant Jim - full marks for persistence - a 10-year-old thread!
Must show both versions to my daughter, as she's going to make me a granny in December - scans suggest only 10 fingers and toes!

Subject: Lyr Add: TEN BABY FINGERS (Edelheit/Sanders/Carlo)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 04 Oct 10 - 08:46 AM

No mention of toes in this one, though!

From the sheet music at Mississippi State University:

TEN BABY FINGERS
Words, Harry Edelheit. Music, Alma Sanders & Monte Carlo.
New York: A. J. Stasny Music Co., 1920.

1. Just picture a happy mother,
Imagine the first baby there,
Then picture their love for each other,
As she hums this melody rare:

CHORUS: Ten baby fingers brought me happiness.
They mean the world to me,
For each night they are caressed,
With many kisses pressed,
Then with a loving pray'r they're gently blessed.
Ten baby fingers came from Paradise
In answer to my plea.
Just as dear as the beads of the rosary,
Ten baby fingers are to me.

2. I prayed for a gift from heaven,
And my plea was heard up above.
The answer to me was given,
In ten baby fingers to love.

The Internet Archive has recordings of TEN LITTLE FINGERS AND TEN LITTLE TOES (DOWN IN TENNESSEE) by

Billy Jones & Ernest Hare, 1921 (go here, or click to play).

Billie (sic) Murray & Ed Smalle, undated (go here, or click to play.)

In both cases, the song is arranged as a duet in "dialogue" fashion, so the lyrics differ somewhat from the ones posted above.

I remember some of the lyrics from my Sweet Adelines neighbor!

I've got ten baby fingers and ten baby toes
Down in Tennisee, waitin' there for me
I've never had a baby call me "daddy"
I'll be going back there soon
By the light of the August moon
To see my ten baby fingers and ten baby toes
Waitin' down in Tennisee for me

I lived on tenth street, house was number ten
Took ten years to build by ten lazy men
Got one stinker, only one, but then
Ten years from now I might have

Ten baby fingers and ten baby toes (repeat)

I think this is what you are looking for!

This I learned from my sister in the 1940s
------------------------------------------

Oh I've got 10 baby fingers and 10 baby toes.
They're ahead of me and growing constantly.
When I was only 10, my shoe size was 11.
Now I'm 33 and they're still ahead of me.

My Ma says they're too big.
My Pa says they smell.
But I don't care I love em
and I love big feet as well

Each night when I retire to get some sleep and some rest
When I take off my shoes and socks I'm nearly undressed

Cause I've got 10 baby fingers and 10 baby toes
and all the pint-sized people envy me.
