Subject: Mudcatters near Ithaca, NY?
From: hesperis
Date: 11 Nov 00 - 12:48 AM

Hello all.

I am visiting near Ithaca in the first part of this week. Are there any 'catters near enough for a visit?

I've heard there's a really cool music store there, too. (Or in a smaller city nearby.) Checking that out for sure!!!

Unfortunately, this trip means that I might not be on Mudcat for the duration of the visit. I can check the forum tomorrow, but that's about it 'till next week.

Really looking forward to the trip!!!

PM me specifics!!!!!!!! Which days??? Me for sure, maybe Hardiman, and MMario is over that way too, and there are others within a couple hours who may be able to get away... Burke... Irish Sergeant...

Ithaca Guitar Works, Chris Broadwell. Has website.

Also there was a thread recently about Bath, NY that had good Ithaca info-- search on BATH, 30 days.

I'd dig these up for you but my ISP is on slo mo tonight.

You coming by yourself? Doesn't flattop need a little vacation about now too? What about the rest of your wacky gang? What, they dont act right in the car and you won't give them rides anymore? (Tie them up, you know, bound and gagged, come on!)

Whatcha coming for anyhow?

Come on!! We want details!!!

I'm a little over an hour away from Ithaca when I'm home, about two hours out when I'm at work. Raggman's on the commons is a great place to eat, BTW

Raggman's, my former employer when I was at Ithaca College. What's an hour away from Ithaca--aside from Penn Yan (my hometown)?

Great!

I'm visiting my mother, who is visiting a friend. It's somewhere nearby, but not in that city. I can come into Ithaca or nearby on tuesday, I think. (I'll want to visit with my mum on monday.) Have to check with people...

I just found out there *is* internet access there that I can use, so I'll PM both Praise and MMario when I arrive, late sunday night. I don't know Lucius, but if we do a mini-gathering, that'll be ok too. (I am actually a bit shy.)

flattop always needs a vacation, but unfortunately, work gets in the way.

If I'm the other side of Ithaca than you, we could probably meet there, so as to have less driving all round.

Now I am going to have to go look at your pictures, so I know who you folks are!

See ya!

Hes: I'm in Syracuse. I don't know at this point if I can get down to Ithaca which is 45min-hour or so depending on how much lead my foot has. Unfortunately, I'm tied up looking for work to tide me over until this bloody lay-off ends (Hopefully soon). I'm not real familiar with the good eating places in Ithaca but there should be quite a few. After all it is a college town. What town outside of Ithaca? HAve a great visit. Hello all!

Tuesday is open at this point, so MMario, just say what time is good for you. The rest of us might start earlier, (at the Guitar store,) but I want to meet you, and Hardiman too!

Guitar store and then dinner, sound good?

Irish Sargeant - It's near Candor. So Ithaca would probably be easier to get to all round. Besides, music!

Praise - I might be going out this afternoon, (shortly,) so calling tonight would be better. (If I miss your call I'll call you.)

I am getting excited!!!!!

Ithaca Guitar Works is open till 5:30 tomorrow, so Hesperis, you may want to get there a little earlier. There is a great Commons area just off it, with all kinds of great shops to stroll around. How about all who can, meet up at 5PM at Guitar Works then? Then dinner at Moosewood so MMario can find us easily, and then wander around or whatever?

Moosewood and Guitar Works are in a mini-mall with benches, etc. around, so if there are instruments that could work.... I bet the acoustics would be great for singing too!

Hess, I will call you this evening. Now all we need is for Biskit to be in the area tomorrow!

Oh, man! I already took my 600 mile round-trip journey for the week - don't think I can do another one so soon :-) I lived in Ithaca until I was 9 and my sister stayed there a bunch of years later. We go back sometimes for Grassroots (my sister knows all the Puryears and other organizers) and I have one close friend out in Newfield. I can't tell you how much I wish I could hop in the car and go have dinner at Moosewood with you all! My father used to teach in Dewitt when it was a Junior High School -- before it was ever a mall!

Have fun.

Hello!

Here's a full report (unless I've forgotten something since yesterday, of course):

Got to Ithaca in midafternoon, bought way too many books, went to the Ithaca Guitar Works, bought strings for my Mandolin because one of the E strings had snapped the night before when I tried to tune it, wandered around the mall, bought a panflute at this AWESOME drum store, went to the Moosewood restaurant at around 4:30 because I needed a refill, they weren't serving till 5, so I had a nap on the couch in the lounge area.

Of course, as soon as I settled in to nap, I heard someone come through the door, so I had to look. Praise looks a lot like her pictures, so I recognized her at once. There was a guy trailing after her, that had to be Hardiman.

So I got up and smiled at Praise, so she would know it was me, and then said that I had a surprise for them.

I led them around the corner, to the table I'd picked out earlier. When Praise saw Little Hawk sitting at the table, she burst into tears. I guess she thought I'd brought flattop down with me, she must have been really disappointed.

Anyway, we all sat down and ordered food, and then started talking about everything imaginable. We started with the Orillia Non-clique, I think, and all of us picked on flattop because he wasn't there to defend himself. And why he thinks I need to blow my nose any differently than I do already is beyond me. (But I digress...) For some reason, we didn't pick on sophocleese, or on any of the honorary members.

Then Little Hawk started trying to convert Praise to his brand of spirituality. It was funny to watch, particularly after the stupid accusations Praise has been getting on Mudcat lately. Believe me, Little Hawk is much worse for that than Praise ever could be. He'll talk your ears off on any subject imaginable, and on a few that aren't.

Hardiman went out for a smoke, and Praise cleared off the table, then demanded a lesson in finger-picking. So we told her some stuff for normal guitar, cause neither the Hawkster nor myself ever played slide geetar afore.

Then there was much more talk, about everything and anything. Eventually, MMario showed up, and we talked about ren faires and acting, for a while. We also all had strange stories about animals, and shared them all around. That was wierd, but very funny.

(I don't talk much, especially if I need to eat, because I am such a slow eater that if I'd talked, we'd have been there long past closing time. We did take some pictures, and I'll be putting them up when we get home.)

Then the musical instruments came out. Little Hawk played a few songs, then Hardiman, then I sang 'Forest Enchanted' along with my Mandolin. Praise, did you sing something then? MMario sang that ballad of Lord Reynalds Son, or whatever Lord it was. Alan of Australia wrote it, loosely based on the story of Beth Gelert. Beautiful song, horribly tragic story. I like the ending with the shield, though, that wasn't in the poem I know. Good performances from everyone who did perform. Somebody else in the restaurant started playing spoons during one of Hardiman's pieces, and I tried to play the panpipes that I'd got one week ago. (I kept on messing up the intervals.) That was fun too. And it was good to watch someone who can actually play Mandolin.

We talked for a bit after that, and then decided to leave. Big hugs all round. MMario told us to drive safely, because there are a lot of deer around.

We actually saw a couple of deer on the way home, a male crossing the road to go to a field to nibble, and then a little later, a female. Little Hawk was driving slowly though, and we missed them by several feet. We almost hit a skunk the night before that. Hawk swerved to avoid it, and it took faster than usual for that skunk to cross the road. Usually they just swagger, this one was actually hurrying. It didn't spray the car or anything, thank goodness!

Good food, good friends, good music - yeah, it was fun.
See ya next time!

Also see the thread MMario could not resist starting last night, Moosewood and MudCats.

LOL!! I dared Hess to post that I burst into tears!!! No-- Susan, be honest-- I didn't dare her, I suggested it!! LOL!! Of course I was perfectly happy to see Little Hawk! How else could we have had a chance to pick on flattop??? I, of course, was discreet, having only praise to offer! And a BSEG!

Yes, we had a great time. I hummed a few harmonies with the cold I have keeping me from singing anything. Truth is, I couldn't think of any lyrics, with my fever getting up there, and all the LOL, till just before leaving, and by then we had pretty much done the music thing.

It was Hesperis who pointed out that the supposed "Proselytizing Praise" had sat through all of the talk on reincarnation without saying much. I had sat there... listening... thinking.... comparing what I heard to my own experience, listening.... wondering what is proselytization, and how is it best to respond to it... and wondering if they would notice I just listened.

They asked me why I had not interrupted or participated in the talk about spirituality. I responded that this is not the kind of thing I go into with people individually without some prior relationship having built a foundation for the farthest frontiers of thinking about these matters-- that foundation taking time to develop-- because a discussion with me will tend to go that frontier where they have been struggling or questioning or wondering-- and then blast out past that point. Unlike sharing what I have experienced and learned, as I often do in my writing, a personal discussion I am party to tends to focus on the other person, and the attention I bring to bear on that tends to move them forward in their own area of interest.

I also explained that evangelization is not where my spiritual gifts happen to lie-- that my orientation is to listen, to help, to offer good news about what is being shared with me, not necessarily good news about Jesus... and that what I have to share about my own spirituality is that what I had heard the others share is encompassed within my relationship with Jesus. And then we moved on.

As Hardi drove us home, I reflected on the realization that this had been a first meeting with Hesperis and Little Hawk and that we had only seen MMario a few times before, yet there had been instant communication, accurate joking, and joy. I thought back the few short months it had been since we had made our first MudMeet with MMario and Irish Sergeant. I remembered how excited I had been, before it, and how excited Hesperis had been the night before this meeting... and I hoped her first MudMeeting had been as glorious as mine. Her small sweet smile and dancing eyes, and the warmth and ease of the hug she gave me when we left, answered that question. I think you'll see all of that reflected in the pictures, too, on all of us.

I wondered, too, about the people sitting around us as the corner we first occupied alone got filled up with other diners, and then since we stayed so late, as they left and it was just the staff closing up. They must have thought we were all such good, good frieneds... assumed we had known each other a long time. They'd have seen people of different ages, genders, dress codes, personal habits, musical gifts, ideas.... tumbling all over each other in joy, joy, joy. It would have been the joy they would remember, I think.

Ya know in a romantic movie when the couple is dancing, smiling, late, oblivious to the closing routines of the staff, and the staff have that cute little smile as the couple finally notices they've closed, and they leave? It was just like that.

To wear and see that kind of smile... it is worth every flame, frustration, and foolishness we can experience in this amazing Mudcat Community. It's worth even more. It's certainly worth the drive to meet a Catter. The curiosity and joy, the way people can't WAIT to get their hands on each other in person-- it carries away everything else.

I recommend this experience. I want to have it next with someone I don't agree with at all, and see what changes. I want to have it with someone who thinks I am the devil incarnate, whatever that means to them, and see what happens, or with someone I feel that way toward, if I can think of anyone that way. I want to see if that all gets carried away. Any takers?

Hesperis, god bless your sweet beautiful soul for bringing this about, my dear sister in the heart.

~Susan

yuppers. It was a good time with good friends we were meeting for the first time. What more could one have saked, except praise be well enough to sing, and about 48 more hours to enjoy it in. "Men use the URL!"

LOL!!!

Hey. I have a question. It just hit me. If I had been feeling better, I might or might not have felt like singing. But you know what? I would have asked Hardiman to lead us in a round of prayerful thanksgiving for each other and the time spent.

Tell me true, each of you-- would that have felt right? And if so, should we do it right here?

Tell me true.

Wow, hey, what a great evening that was! First of all, Ithaca turned out to be a beautiful town with a lot of great stores. We got a whole lot of use books. One of them is full of photos taken around 1900 of Nez Perce and other Indians on various reservations out west. Stunning pictures...the Native people still looked very much of their own culture. You can see how much has been lost when you look at those pictures, and you can also see the pain in their eyes. They had been rendered powerless and dependent for some time already in 1900, but they had not forgotten who they were yet.

Another book was on Origami...for Hesperis.

2 cookbooks...one on East Indian cookingk, one on Chinese...YUM!!! Can't wait to try out these recipes.

An original hardbound first edition of Joan Baez first book, "Daybreak". Yowsa!!! I can put it alongside "Tarantula" and "A Voice To Sing With".

Then the drum store...that was great!

Then to Moosewood. There was a guy playing guitar and singing for a bit, so I played some harmonica with him.

Then our fellow mudcatters showed up, for the best part of all...

Praise turns out to be a GREAT listener. Just quietly takes it all in. She's also got a wacko sense of humour which threw me a couple of times. Hardiman is a thoroughly likeable gent, and he told some hilarious stories, plus the lyrics to a parody of the old Mel Torme Christmas song that was one of the funniest things I've ever heard. MMario showed up later and turned out to be lots of fun as well. What a bunch of characters we all are. Pity flattop couldn't be there.

I thought Praise was crying because she had finally met the legendary Little Hawk...??? (Joke!) Actually, she didn't cry at all, except when she saw the bill... (another joke!).

Well, all I can say to add to that is....It's kind of cool to be back in New York State again...and I think that Mudcatter getogethers are the greatest idea since having opposite sexes!!!

Thank God for the Internet.

- LH

My first Getaway weekend was my first chance to meet 'catters in the flesh, then came Allan C and Bill's Adventure, and then... and then.... I am still blown away by the power of the internet to bring people together in this way.

Moosewood is one of my favorite places on earth, and I LOVE thinking of you guys making music there!

Thanks for sharing.

Dani

I do apologize to all for not being able to make it. When I got up Yesterday, I was sick as a dog that just ate more than his fair share of amphibian life forms. Racked on the couch all day. Again apologies and it sounds like I missed a great time. Don, actually, I go back to Emkay tomorrow eve. but I'm still looking for freelance writing jobs. Thank you for your kind offer. Where has the flyin' column been playing recently and would you be interested in covering "A Soldier's Lament" Let me know would you? I am feeling much better today. It's amazing what a lot of rest and a couple of quick brew-ups (Tea) will do for mind and body. Do keep me in mind for any future soirees. Take good care all, kindest reguards, Neil

Been to the one in Ithaca? We were in the little corner just past the "bar", under the street window that is up overhead, at the foot of the stairs-- outside the main dining room-- across from the loo's.

Praise:It's a great idea but at this point I'm working 2:30-10:30 pm.I will keep you apprised. I'll have to do some checking to find out where the folkies hang out in this burg. I'm not much of a social butterfly. I do hope you're feeling better. I thought I read a post that said you were ill but it has been a while. Any way if I don't hear from you before, Susan, you, HArdiman and Monica have a great Thanksgiving. Kindest reguards, Neil

Neil, I am improving slowly from adrenal exhaustion and taking some time off after a bad job situation. Hardi and I often go a-wandering on his day off each week, Fridays. So a dive up your way is not out of the question, and maybe we could get MMario to take a mental health day off and join us. Time will get tighter for me after the first of the year, so...

Where the folkies hang out there... would that not be wherever we meet? *G*

~Susan
