Subject: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 11 Nov 00 - 02:01 PM In case anyone is interested, it's my turn to do the Edale Rambler Folk Train. The train leaves Manchester Piccadilly station at 18:43 (6:43pm) on Tuesday 14th November, arrives in Edale around 19:30 (7:30pm), return trip is at 21:07 (9:07pm) arriving back in Manchester just before 22:00 (10:00pm). I'll be singing and playing on the train, and in the Rambler pub at Edale. All you pay for is your train ticket, and food and drinks in the pub. See you there? Be there, or be elsewhere! |

Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 12 Nov 00 - 08:55 AM Bernard I only just saw this and I've been meaning to try the folk train for a while. It had never occured to me before that I could be at the wrong end of the tracks! So I will be there in spirit only as I would feel I was missing out on the silent journeys to and from The Rambler. |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 12 Nov 00 - 09:07 AM Is that you? The animated pic on the homepage Can I copy it and send it my friend - she plays piano accordian and it would cheer her up no end Roger |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 12 Nov 00 - 11:23 AM Yup - it's me, frightening tho' that may seem! It's an animated GIF, which won't animate unless it's included in an HTML script, or you've got a suitable GIF edit program... feel free to copy it, but don't blame me if your chickens go broody as a result!! Anyway, the train is a normal scheduled service which runs between Manchester & Sheffield - you could still make the pub session (around 7:30pm). I believe they run a folk train from Sheffield to Edale, but I don't know any more than that. Try ringing Becky Flower (01663-746377 )or Tony Wills (0161-427-5207) of the Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership, who organise the 'Folk Train'. Let's just hope that Rail Crack don't mess it up with leaves on the tracks... |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Nynia Date: 12 Nov 00 - 12:15 PM Bernard Hi, re. "The Runaway Train" did you know this was a real incident. It happened in 1963 at Kirkcudbright (as in centipede) station when a train from Tarf failed to stop, ran through a buffer, across a main road, and crashed into a Mr Patterson's shop & house. Mr Maxwell was the station master and also Provest, he was non to chuffed, but as it happened at the begining of carnival week it was great free publicity. The branch was a victim of Beeching a couple of years later. THE RUNAWAY TRAIN The runaway train came over the hill and she blew The runaway train came over the hill and she blew The runaway train came down by the Dee And headed straight for the deep blue sea And she blew The local inhabitants turned in their sleep as she blew The local inhabitants turned in their sleep as she blew The local inhabitants jumped to their feet As the carriage charged across the street And she blew Bob Patterson lay in his bed with a snore, as she blew Bob Patterson lay in his bed with a snore, as she blew Bob Patterson lay in his bed with a snore But he jumped as the carriages banged his door And she blew His daughters dreamed of the Carnival Ball as she blew His daughters dreamed of the Carnival Ball as she blew His daughters dreamed of the Carnival Ball And the buffer went right through the restaurant wall And she blew The Porter stood with a smile of bliss as she blew The Porter stood with a smile of bliss as she blew He said as he stood with that smile of bliss Castle Douglas had never a stunt like this And she blew The Provest he stood with his tongue in his cheek as she blew The Provest he stood with his tongue in his cheek as she blew The Provest he stood with his tongue in his cheek And said "What a start to Carnival Week!" And she blew ANON Hope you found that interesting I found it in "The Lost Railway Lines Of Galloway" by Alasdair Wham. As part of a Uni course I am currently researching how text is (I feel) moving back towards orality. I'd be very interested to hear some background on "The Folk Train" history, organisers, how it's run etc. If you could PM me anything that would be brill. Thanks Nynia :-) -) ) |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 12 Nov 00 - 01:00 PM Nynia - I'll give you a general reply here, and get back to you with more details when I have them... I haven't seen that version of the song before! As you know, the original song is of American origin, and dates back to the era of the wood burning locomotives with the great big funnels - similar to the animated one on my website. The song isn't in my repertoire, but I'll be playing the tune on my accordion (to give my throat a rest!) during the trip! Background info: The Folk Train happens on the second Tuesday of every month from October through to May, with every second and fourth Tuesdays during the summer season (June - September). A similar event is run from the Sheffield end - I think it's on a Thursday, but I'm not sure. The journey is a normal scheduled service (Manchester to Sheffield), so there are daily commuters on the train as well as folkies. Usually the 'turn' is a band or group - I think I'm the only soloist daft enough (and loud enough!) to tackle the gig. During the trip from Manchester to Edale I have to battle against the noise of the train - a two or three carriage diesel, usually - until we arrive at Edale, and pile into the Rambler pub. It's relatively quiet in there, and they have plenty of excellent bar food, reasonably priced. As the pub is in the Peak District, fell walkers and ramblers join in the fun. Around 9:00pm we pile out of the pub, and back on to the platform to rejoin the train on its way back to Manchester - again, I have to battle against the noise of the train... if my throat holds out! I don't know much about the history of it - I'll ask Tony on Tuesday, and PM you with the results...

Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 12 Nov 00 - 01:48 PM SRFN has a bit about Sheffield/Edale folk train but no mention of Manchester/edale. The Sheffield to Manchester rail link has fast trains that do not stop at the villages on route and a restricted slow service that does call at them. I think the folk train idea came about to get bums on seats on the slow train in the evening thereby justifying the train stopping at the villages. Also the Rambler hopefully gets some custom and everyone is happy.I think SRFN should update their info to include the manchester end. Nice tunes on your homepage Bernard ! |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 12 Nov 00 - 02:00 PM Thanks, Roger! I know that the Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership haven't even got a modem in their computer, let alone a website! They're only in the office part-time, but Becky is hoping to get 'on-line' soon - particularly since I told her how cheap modems and ISP's are these days! |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 12 Nov 00 - 09:50 PM Thanks for that information! Strictly speaking, the Manchester-end trains are outside the South Riding Folk Network's remit, but I'll see to it that the details get included at The Folk Train -provided, of course, that Hope Valley get their finger out and tell us what they're doing... Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Noreen Date: 13 Nov 00 - 10:51 AM Bernard- Good luck and I hope you have a wonderful time! Noreen |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 15 Nov 00 - 12:09 PM A more detailed Folk Train clicky Hope you had a good night Bernard Roger |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 15 Nov 00 - 06:14 PM It went well enough - although it was a strain, being my first booking for over twelve months... Never mind - at least the punters were happy.

Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Catrin Date: 16 Nov 00 - 04:05 AM Bernard - I am really sorry I couldn't make it! I've got a very busy weekend coming up! (You might have heard aboutit!) I'm glad to hear it went well. Maybe next time.............. Cheers, Catrin |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: JulieF Date: 16 Nov 00 - 05:53 AM Have fun Bernard The Sheffield Fiddle Society's experience of playing the folk train ( to be repeated jan14th I think) was that you had problems if you were trying to play in 3/4 when the train was moving in 4/4 - they ended up swaying against the motion. Its certainly worth a trip from either end. All the best Julie |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 16 Nov 00 - 02:52 PM The rhythm of the train I was on defied definition! What with the ballistics of a very large 120 bass accordion and my 17st frame, we had a swinging time!! Once I was wedged into a doorway, things became a little more predictable, but one young lady on her mobile phone was completely flummoxed by the whole thing! Anyone who hasn't yet experienced the Folk Train - either Manchester-Edale, or Sheffield-Edale, should give it a try... |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Noreen Date: 17 Nov 00 - 08:17 AM When's your next appearance, Bernard- mayhap we could arrange a Mudcat prescence on the folk train? Noreen |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 18 Nov 00 - 11:38 AM Don't know. To be honest, I don't really care at the moment. None of my 'mates' turned up to support me - my first gig in over a year - and it's triggered another 'downer'. Perhaps it's time to 'knock it on the head'? |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 29 Nov 00 - 05:35 PM DIARY DATE! Subject to confirmation - I'll be at the Rambler pub in Edale on Tuesday January 25th from around 7:30pm, sharing the 'stage' with the Sheffield Fiddle Society. I won't be on the train (Sheffield - Edale) on this occasion; Robin Garside, who normally appears with the Fiddle Society, is unavailable for this particular gig; I've been asked by the organiser if I'd be prepared to step in and attempt to fill the gap... I'll be going to Edale by car on this occasion (from Manchester) - the Manchester train times don't quite fit the schedule for the Sheffield run, not unsurprisingly!! More info on my website nearer the time... |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: JulieF Date: 30 Nov 00 - 08:14 AM Bernard - there's a more than fair chance that I'ld see you there then (dependant on daughter's homework panic level) Julie |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 30 Nov 00 - 03:53 PM Jollydee! Well, that's one more Mudcatter than last time!! Hope to see you there!! |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 14 Jan 01 - 12:30 PM |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 14 Jan 01 - 01:54 PM January 25th!! That would make it next week (today being the 14th). I'm not on the train, just at the Rambler in Edale, and I'm going by car - particularly as the trains are a bit hit and miss at the moment!! |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: John Routledge Date: 14 Jan 01 - 05:25 PM Bernard - Looking forward to meeting you on 25th.More than likely by car with SO. Hoping for a clear night to see rim of Kinder.Cheers GB

Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 14 Jan 01 - 05:32 PM Okay! See you there! It's quite likely that those of us who've got there by car will carry on a session after the Sheffield Fiddle Society have departed on the return train, so if you wish to bring instruments, please do! |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Bernard Date: 14 Jan 01 - 05:55 PM CORRECTION!! The date is TUESDAY JANUARY 23rd. I've just had an email from the organiser, and I was given the wrong date! Sorry for any confusion! |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Noreen Date: 16 Jan 01 - 11:33 AM Sounds good, Bernard. I'd like to be there. Noreen |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Llanfair Date: 16 Jan 01 - 11:42 AM I'll see if I can make it, sounds good!!!!! Cheers, Bron. |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 22 May 01 - 08:41 AM The Folk Train goes out again this evening (Tuesday 22nd May), this time with singers and musicians from the South Riding Folk Network The train leaves Sheffield at 7:16 pm, returning from Edale at 10 pm. |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: John J Date: 22 May 01 - 12:17 PM Hello Malcolm, did you get back ok on sunday? I beeped you as I pulled out onto the main road heading for home....you were at the bus stop, don't know if you spotted us. Good weekend weren't it?! John |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 22 May 01 - 12:22 PM It certainly was. The bus didn't materialise, but I was lucky enough to get a lift. Still no trains running from Leeds to Sheffield, though, so it was quite a long journey! |
Subject: RE: Edale Rambler Folk Train From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 07 Sep 01 - 08:57 AM 25 September 2001 - Robin Garside Robin usually fronts the Fiddle Society, who appeared earlier in the year, but he is of course a seasoned performer in his own right. Artist, computer expert, audio engineer, band leader, instrumentalist, folk singer, blues singer, shantyman and cook |
