Thought you'd like to know Kentucky was written and sung by Karl Davis of Karl and Hardy and also the Cumberland ridgerunners. Both were on WLS National Barn Dance. Karl and Hardy had a picking style and close harmony which influenced the Everly Brothers, though they themselves never got the recognition they deserved..
best friend and neighbor of Karl's daughter.

I am trying to find a version by Homer and Jethro of the song "Kentucky". I had it as a single when I was a kid. Can't find it by them. Does anyone recall them ever recording it? Thanks,

Masato, you have a typo in the first sentence of your last posting. It should read 'Karl and Harty'. His full name was Hartford Taylor.

"Karl [Davis] and Harry Harty [Taylor] recorded the song ["Kentucky"] first in January 1941 for the Columbia label, and the record was especially popular with lonely southern servicemen who found themsleves thousands of miles from the land they loved. But in 1947 the Blue Sky Boys (the Bolick Brothers) recorded the song, and it really became a bestseller, reportedly running up sales of almost half a million copies; it has since been recorded by dozens of country singers, including later Kentucky groups like the Osborne Brothers and the Everly Brothers. On the strength of its beauty, and its popularity, Karl Davis was made a Kentucky Colonel in 1970. It was one of the few tokens of recognition he received in later life for his immense contributions to country music." There was a totally different song entitled "Kentucky" written and recorded by the Virginia band Heights of Grass on their "Ghost Riders" album in 1978. I used to do it but it's been years and someone or something has erased it from my memory banks. Can't find the lyrics on the net and my ex-wife wound up with the album.

Written by Karl Davis in 1942, who said, "I wrote the song as a tribute to my home state. I grew up in Mount Vernon, Kentucky. About four years ago [ca. 1969], I was made a Kentucky Colonel on the strength of having written it." (Horstman, Sing Your Heart Out, Country Boy, 3rd ed., p. 17)
Probably the Louvin Brothers' version is the most famous; sound clip is HERE). The Blue Sky Boys' singing can be heard at The Record Lady's Real Country Archives ("Real Country Archives Page 7"). This is the link to RA. Other artists, such as the Osborne Brothers and Mac Wiseman, sang it.
