Subject: Lyr Add: BIG CHESTED WOMAN (from Joe Keene)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 08 May 17 - 08:54 AM

I found this recording on Spotify. I have boldfaced the words that are different from the version I posted earlier.

BIG CHESTED WOMAN
Words and music by Chuck Ramey (Charles R. Ramey), ©1971.
As recorded by Joe Keene on his album "Merely Foolish" (2012—originally released as a single, 1979).

[VERSE 1] Oh, the harvestin' was over.
The alfalfa and the clover
And the timothy was curin' in the mow.
We cleaned out the barn and spread it,
And we got some lime on credit,
And we plowed it in and put away the plow.
Then Pa said, "Son, I can't afford it,
But you ought to be rewarded,
So here's fifty bucks to go to Evansville."
So right there I made my mind up,
And I got my shoes all shined up,
Then I grabbed my hat and I said: "By Ned, I will!"

[CHORUS 1] I'll meet some great big-chested woman,
And to prove that I've got nothin' up my sleeve,
I'll love that great big-chested woman,
And I'll make that gal my wife before I leave.

[VERSE 2] Well, I seen the Coliseum,
And I seen the new museum,
And I took in all the nightclubs one by one.
I learned to dance the mashed pertaters
And went to three or four theayters

And I rode some elevators just for fun.
Then I went to see the flickers,
And I drank some fancy liquors,
Had a barbecue, a fiddler, and a beer,
But I dern-near tripped a wicket
When I went to pay my ticket,
And I got a look at that there young cashier.

[CHORUS 2] She was a great big-chested woman,
I could hear my self a-sayin', "I love you."
I kissed that great big-chested woman,
And I married her before the week was through.

[VERSE 3] Wedding night at seven-thirty,
We checked in at the McCurdy,
And I took a room up on the seventh floor.
I went down for sody-water
And when I got back I thought I
Must have opened up somebody else's door.
She was layin' in her nightie,
And I tell you friends, I mighty
Nearly dropped my sody-water then and
there,
For above her solar plexus,
She was flat as central Texas
And her great big chest was hangin' on the chair.

[CHORUS 3] Beware of great big-chested women.
They are padded with intentions to deceive.
If you like great big-chested women,
Just remember that to see is to believe.

The publisher of this song is Joe Keene Music Co., and Ramey also wrote some other songs that Keene recorded: "Beagle Hound," and "There's a Rope behind the Door," so I think it's likely that this is the original recording.

By the way, Evansville, Indiana did indeed have a McCurdy Hotel, but it was converted to a retirement home/nursing facility in 1970. It also has a Coliseum. The "mashed potato" dance step was popular in 1962.

Bob performed once or twice a year at Lewiston, MI's Redwood Steak House in 1974-6 or so. He enjoyed the town, and would be a guest at the home of a particular family during his stay. The father/son pair of the host family recorded his performances - if only I could recall their name. Undoubtedly, in such a small town, someone with the time could probably seek out the recordings.

My recollection of some of the lines are different from those posted by Mr. Dixon, but then, over years of live performances, I would expect some changes. Also, my own memory could be failing - which is why I sought out this site. Thanks!

[VERSE 1] Well, the harvesting was over.
The alfalfa and the clover
Was all cut and dried and put up in the mow.
And I bought some lime on credit,
and I took it out and spread it,
And then I greased and put away the plow.
My Pa said, "Son, I can't afford it,
But y' ought to be rewarded,
So here's fifty bucks to go to Evansville.
But then I made my mind up,
And I got my shoes all shined up,
And I said to him, "By Ned, I think I will!"

[CHORUS 1] I'll find a great big-chested woman,
A girl with knockers so big you won't believe,
I'm going to find myself a great big-chested woman,
And I'll marry-up with her before I leave.

Well, I saw their Coloseum,
and I took in their museums,
and I went to their theatres, there to here,
_(?)_________
and even drank myself a beer.

And I rode the escelator, just for fun.

I was in line at the Bijou for my ticket,
and I nearly flipped my wicket,
when I got a look at that there young cashier!

[CHORUS #2]

VERSE 3] Wedding night at seven-thirty,
We checked into the McCurdy,
And we got a room way up on the seventh floor.
I went for a glass of water,
And I tell you, boys, I oughter
have grabbed my clothes and run right then and there,
Because above her solar plexus,
She was flat as central Texas,
And those massive breasts were hangin' from a chair!

I found the video of Allen Dale singing this song at YouTube, and I did my best to transcribe it, but there are still some gaps and uncertainties. I would appreciate any help resolving them.

The name Wayne Iglehart is taken from Allen Dale's spoken introduction, so it could be misspelled. I have been unable to find him in any database of songwriters.

GREAT BIG-CHESTED WOMAN
Wayne Iglehart(?), 1940s

[VERSE 1] Well, the harvesting is over.
The alfalfa and the clover
Are cut and lie here(?) curing in the mow.
We cleaned out the barn and spread it,
And we bought some lime(?) on credit,
Then we plowed it in and put away the plow.
Pa said, "Son, I can't afford it,
But y' ought to be rewarded,
So here's fifty bucks to go to Evansville(?)."
So right then(?) I made my mind up
And I got my shoes all shined up
... ... ...[I can't understand this line at all.]

[CHORUS 1] I'll find a great big-chested woman,
And to prove that I have nothin' up my sleeve,
I'll woo that great big-chested woman,
And I'll marry her before I take my leave.

[VERSE 2] Well, I saw the Main(?) Museum,
And I saw the Coliseum,
And I visited all the nightclubs one by one.
I window-shopped at Seder's(?)
Where I danced the mashed potaters
And I rode some escalators just for fun.
I went to where the candles flicker
And I drank some fancy liquor,
Had some barbecue ... and a beer,
And I nearly flipped my wicket,
When I went to pay the ticket,
And I got a look at that there young cashier.

[CHORUS 2] She was a great big-chested woman,
And I could hear my heart just sayin', "I love you."
I wooed that great big-chested woman,
And I'd married her before the week was through.

[VERSE 3] Wedding night at seven-thirty,
We checked into the McCurdy,
And we got a room up on the seventh floor.
I went down for sody-water
And when I got back I thought I
Must have opened up somebody else's door.
There lay my darlin' stripped to stockin's,
And I tell you it was shockin'
To see that buxom beauty lyin' there,
'Cause above her solar plexus (that's her chest),
She was flat as central Texas
And her great big chest was hangin' from a chair.

[CHORUS 3] Beware of great big-chested women,
'Cause they are padded with intentions to deceive.
If you like great big-chested women,
Just remember what you see you can't believe.

Thanks Rick, that is a funny song, but not the one I am seeking. I still hope someone recognizes it, and can point me in the right direction.

Well Bouzouki, I can't help you with THAT song...other to say that it's a satirical take on a very common theme in folk music. The song "A very Unfortunate Man" is one of the variants.

But.....coincidentally (although it won't be much help) my mother, Dorothy, was good friends with Ragtime Bob Darch. Although she was primarily a "straight" musician, she loved Ragtime, and could play it reasonably well. Hopefully someone here can up with the answer.

Rick

Does anyone remember a honky tonk piano player named "Ragtime Bob Darch", He used to play at the Silver Rail, and the Hayloft,25 to 30 years ago, in Toronto. He sang a song about a man picking up a pretty girl in a bar, only to get her home to find out that all het best atributes were fake. The only line I remember is "and above her solarplexis she was flat as central Texas, and her great big chest was hanging on the chair" It could have a title like "she was a great big chested woman".Any help with lyrics and chords or a source for the song itself would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
