Hey there, I'll be in San Francisco attending a conference from Jan 2 through 9th, would love to meet any fellow mudcatters in that area...

Mrrzy, on January 6th there'll be the monthly chantey sing (which I host) aboard ship at San Francisco's Hyde Street Pier. Radriano, Riggy, and Melani are regulars there, with Pam and Dave Swan, Winters Wages, and Elise showing up when they can. BSeed and Joe Offer also attended the September one. (hope to see you guys back) Hope to see you there. Let one of us know if you'd like to go and we'll get you there.

Whoa, sounds too cool! Let's see, the 6th is Saturday, right? That's the night of our big author dinner (NO I can't get out of it much as I'd rather) but how late will the festivities stay festive, maybe I could come out later? Will PM you later in the year unless this turns into a thread that stays fresh...

I'll be in the area for the SFFMC New Years Celebration, tho probably not thru Saturday. Maybe we can work out some way to get together before then. Is your conference in the city proper or surrounding area? PM me if you're interested and I'll tell you how to find me there.
Blessings,
Barbara

The chantey sing runs from 8pm to midnight. If you're free later that evening after the dinner, come on by.

Yay, thanks for the blickie, where the blazes was it? I looked under San Fran, and mrrzy, and catters, and everything I could think of... Whoo woo! And don't worry, I won't be a mass of blue when I get there, the cycle rolls on and upward again... whew!

OK, am trying again (am at a cybercafe with no idea how these machines work...)

The last gateshift ends at ten, but people still come by after that. Just slide open the gate, closing it behind you, and come in. The schooner C.A. Thayer is the first sailing ship you come to, about a third of the way up the pier, on your left. Go down into the hold of the ship, and that's where we are. There'll be a break at about 10:15, where people will be getting hot cider, tea, coffee, cocoa from the ship's galley. I don't think PJ, Dave, or Riggy can make this one, but I think radriano will be there. Said chanteyranger. And I hear Joe Offer might come too... Anyone else?

Flash bulletin! Saw PJ and Dave yesterday, and it looks like they will be there. Confirmed that Riggy will be out of town. That's the lastest from the CR Crier.

Well, Mrr, I'll try, but won't make any promises. Driving home from San Francisco through heavy fog last night was a little more treacherous than I like - and it's tempting fate to do it twice in a week. Praise didn't understand that it's a hundred-mile drive each way for me, so she kept after me until I agreed to meet her at the airport.

Posted the details, forgot the broad brush strokes:

It is at the Hyde Street Pier, 2905 Hyde st., at Jefferson st., Fisherman's Wharf. There are about 5 or 6 bus lines that go near. ...You can also call the ranger office at (415) 556-6435 for more info. The sing starts at 8, with the gate opening at 730. I'll put you on the gatelist (it's done by reservation, though it's free)... .

Hey, Mrrz, where are you staying? I've been thinking about going to the chanty sing(depending on the progress of my cold--getting reacclimated to the Bay Area after a week in Hawaii has been a bit rough, particularly since the heat in my classroom--from which I'm posting now--is undependable, to say the least). Also, what's on your agenda for Monday night? I have a group that jams weekly--mostly old timey and gospel, some blues, fiddle tunes, contemporary folk. There are anywhere from four to ten of us of a week, guitars, bass, banjos, harmonica, autoharp, piano, fiddle (three peripatetic fiddlers).

Seed, we'll sing "Old Maui" to help you get acclimated!

Joe - you're welcome to stay overnight at my place in Berkeley, if that would help you out on the long drive situation.

Oddly enough, I'll be in SF that night, and I might be able to drop by.

If you could add me to the gatelist, I'd appreciate it.

Are you the same Kevin Murphy I knew from the Ridge Project student co-op back in, I think, '78? Lots of Kevin Murphys, but thought I'd ask. Anyway, call (415)556-6435 and leave your last name and how many people will be with you, if any, and you'll be on the list. See you there.

I'm planning on being there, since Mike's out of town and I'm on my lonesome. Dinner beforehand, anyone? Only play Old Maui if someone ELSE will remember all of the words. I botched it last month. I've been humming it, though, having just returned from there myself!

Flash bummer of a bulletin: Riggy and Winters Wages are away, radriano has the flu. PJ and Dave a longstanding prior engagement...most of the cream of the chantey sing crop. But, as of now, there are 224 sign-ups. Hopefully Skip Henderson will be there. Yikes.

Darn. Looks like I'm going to chicken out. I have a full day of singing and teaching tomorrow and Monday, and I just don't think I can handle four hours of driving and stay awake. Have a good time, kids.
I think I'd better stay home and do lesson plans.

Sourdough, I'm glad you didn't bring a camera. People staring at me doesn't make me half as nervous as a camera does!

It was a terrific evening! It was really neat to meet m-catters I don't know face to face. Hope to see you all again there.

A terrific evening indeed! There were about 230 people there, and in the abscence of the stalwarts mentioned, a whole crew of singers came out of the woodwork and lent a hand. There were some rarely heard (at least rarely heard at the chantey sing) songs mixed in with standards, sung by Longtime chantey sing regulars Melani and Elise, among others, and it was great to meet Sourdough and Mrrzy.

2001 marks the 20th anniversary year of the chantey sing. We'll have an aniversary celebration sometime later in the year, maybe in August or September, in which I'll post an invitation thread to you all. It could make for a great mudcat gathering.

A very enjoyable evening and for me the first chance to attach faces and 3-d personalities to blue clicky names.

Elise, I did bring a camera! However, the feeling I had was tha it would have been out of place to take photos. THe atmosphere was right for it so I didn't. I was afraid I would help turn it towards being a more self-conscious affair than it was. I liked it the wa it was and will do my best to be at the next one.

Perhps we could take a Mudcat documentation photo - one group picture of the Mudcatters in attendance.

No wonder this sing has lasted for twenty years, it is a little gem of an evening. You spend it on board a ship that rocks slowly in the wakes of passing freighters. The audience and the performers are one. People sit on the bare wooden planks and ribs in the hold of this 105 year old ship that sailed the West Coast for generations. She has made a number of voyages to Fiji and the Hawaiian Islands, too, and even one to Australia. We have the opportunity to go aboard and sing songs, many of which were sung in the forecastle of this ship and on her decks by hundreds of men, the last of the wind-sailors.

A contented Sourdough

Sourdough and Mrrzy, it was great meeting you. Sourdough, take pictures during the break--that shouldn't bother anybody. Besides, I'd love to have one of Elise in all her knitted woolen glory! Great evening!

It was truly marvelous. I had been spending the week meeting authors and occasionally customers with whom I'd had lots of exchanges, so it was kind of an interesting continuation to go to something so completely different and do the same thing! And the exception that proves the rule was there - I recognized chanteyranger immediately, whereas authors never, never look like their emails/phone voices!

The question becomes, since this was the first time I'd done it not en famille - Can I sing? In public?

I am pleased to hear that the Shanty Sing went well. I'm still on the hind end of the flu but, trooper that I am, I am back at work. Sorry I missed meeting you, Sourdough and Mrrzy.
