Subject: RE: Help: Gaelic word for 'Thank you'???? From: MsMoon Date: 15 Nov 00 - 07:48 PM While folks have got their Gaelic lexicons out, I've been searching for the word for "moon" and any handy related expressions...like "new moon", "moonlight", etc. What I'm looking for is something I can use for a new e-mail address, since I'm of Irish descent, and my last name is Moon, and I've long since given up hope of being able to use anything English with Moon in it as a log-in. It'ss too late for that! |
Subject: RE: Help: Gaelic word for 'Thank you'???? From: GUEST,Sean Mac Ruaraidh Date: 15 Nov 00 - 02:13 PM Hi, Surely the time it takes to say it depends on whether you say it in 6/8 time or 2/4 time. Maybe its best said in Single Jig mode ! Also - what about the emphasis - I would put it on the 'maith' rather than the 'go', 'raibh' or 'agat' ! Cheers, Sean. |
Subject: RE: Help: Gaelic word for 'Thank you'???? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 15 Nov 00 - 01:53 PM It may look like a long sweep of words, but spoken it doesn't take any longer than saying "thank you" (T'tha n'k yough). |
Subject: RE: Help: Gaelic word for 'Thank you'???? From: Fiolar Date: 15 Nov 00 - 01:09 PM It is possible to use the Irish word "buiochas" (bwee cus) which simply means "thanks". It is worth pointing out that the pronounciation for Irish words using English word "sound-alikes" is a best a poor substitute. M |
Subject: RE: Help: Gaelic word for 'Thank you'???? From: GUEST,JTT Date: 15 Nov 00 - 08:54 AM There isn't really any short version of "go raibh maith agat", but Aran people slur it into "gurra maaaht". |

Subject: RE: Help: Gaelic word for 'Thank you'???? From: GUEST,Paddy(1) Date: 14 Nov 00 - 06:05 PM To explain:
"Go raibh maith agat" literally means "May good(ness) be with you"
It is rather complicated when you think of it!
But we Irish never use one word when we can get away with four.
Go raibh = may (something) be
mait = good (i.e the "something", in this phrase)
agat = with you

Subject: RE: Help: Gaelic word for 'Thank you'???? From: GUEST,Sean MacRuaraidh Date: 14 Nov 00 - 01:56 PM Hi, I believe the pronunciation differs depending on which part of Ireland you're in. I learnt Irish for a while at school in N.Ireland and when I met someone who'd learnt Irish in Cork their pronunciation of common phrases was quite different I claim 'go row my uggit' is the correct way to say it ! Subject: RE: Help: Gaelic word for 'Thank you'???? From: Fiolar Date: 14 Nov 00 - 01:14 PM By the way - "go raibh mait agat" is pronounced "gu rev moh agut." (moh as in "moth" without the "t". M |
