Well, I finally got it together to put out a CD on my mp3.com site.

Its an eclectic mix with some solidly Celtic offerings and some more acoustic-folkie stuff. Mostly originals with a few trad items. I've been holding off announcing it until I uploaded inside & outside cover art, which I just did.

Price, for now anyway, is the mp3.com minimum of $6 US plus shipping.

I haven't gotten my own check copy yet but I'm fairly confident that it will turn out nicely since the recording was pretty good quality, although one was done on my humble 4-track.

Feel free to window-shop. And you can get one CD free from mp3.com by signing up for something called eCharge, their online transaction service I guess it is...

Aye, tis in the bluid. Ma grandad was alleged tae be descended frae Lochiel. Likely a pack o' lies but we hae the look alricht.

"Squint-Nose Willie-O"

Thanks to everyone who's checked out the music.

Must say I got a bit of sticker shock when I ordered a couple of copies for myself--the mp3.com shipping costs to Canada are kinda outrageous, though they're reasonable in the States. I'm gonna order a batch to go to my inlaws' in Vermont and pick them up at Christmas!

Willie-O ~ I was just about to ask you when you were going to be putting out a cd. I've been enjoying your web site and especially like your song Anna Grace. Me thinks you must be doing that song in something other than the normal EADGBE tuning?

Truth to be told, in plain English, that photo was stretched vertically a bit, my head is not quite that Celtic-shaped. (i.e. tall and narrow) The nose remark is nothing personal, kat--the literal meaning of "Cameron" is in fact "squinty-nose" and I see a distinct family resemblance in many who share that surname with me without being related within the past 150 years or so.

"Anna Grace" like "Spring On the Mississippi" and almost all the instrumentals on the site/album (except "Gogama") are played in DADGAD on the guitar. The rest are in standard.

Like many mp3.com albums, this is still somewhat of a work in progress. In the near future, soon as I have time/money (ha) I will be doing some more work on some of these tracks. For one, Anna Grace which I have never really gotten a finished recording of that I liked. (The current version up there is from a cassette dub of a digital recording--I'll remaster it directly from digital to mp3 as one of the details in the near future.)

I'm also thinking I'll split the content into two CDs when there are a few more tracks ready: one all-Celtic and one more roots-folk. (Canadiana?)

Once again, it's heartening to hear people say nice things, thanks all.

The Long Walk Home", my melancholic air, is crawling up the mp3 charts gradual-like, currently residing at #63 Celtic. Never thought I'd be running around trying to get into the Top 40, but that's my promotional project for the week. It's a pretty nice tune featuring some splendid playing from fiddler James Stephens and low whistle player Duncan Gillis. Oh yeah, I play on it too...

Hint, hint.

Oh shoot! I just ordered mine from MP3, never thinking of an autograph, Bonnie!! Rats! Oh well, I know I will enjoy it anyway.

Thanks for the info on noses, Bill, interesting to know it's a squinty and yer not a squished head.**BG**

Congrats on the Top 40 Crawl, I'll do my bit to help pick up the pace.

Bless you both...Bonnie I am notoriously bad at mailing anything to anyone...just ask anyone. I still don't have my own proof-copy (I have to buy them just like anyone else--but half the price eventually comes back to me). I'm going to get a bunch sent to my in-laws' in the States where the shipping is a lot cheaper and pick them up at Xmas.

So your choices are to go ahead and order it from mp3.com, or wait until sometime after Christmas and I'll have some. Either way I'll autograph it when I see you next! (The autograph will not do anything for the CD's collectible value, I don't think.)

Anyway, I was thrilled to log in and see my first copy sold, other than to myself...thanks again kat.

Sure, Willie. Hey, I went back to see if I could vote to bring it up the charts, but didn't see where to do that. Is it based on sales, or is there somewhere else I can register my not so humble opinion to help you out?

Its not voting or sales. The charts are compiled by a (secret) algorithm involving how many times your music is listened to and/or downloaded on a given day. They only count the first time a particular computer plays a particular song--you can't get a better ranking by playing the same song over and over. (Thank god for that, my life is obsessive enough)

Well Bill, now you have a second copy sold unless someone bought one in between Kat and I.
See Kat and I are very well known music critic around here and once the other Mudcatters catch on that we purchased your new CD, for sure there is going to be a flood in demand.

Good luck! Hope you have enough copies to fill all the orders.

Bon

Actually, kat or bonnie, if the spirit moves you you can start a thread on mp3.com extolling (or denouncing) my modest virtues. Click on the "world/folk" link at the top of my page, then when that takes you to the world/folk charts, click on the Messageboards link to see what's goin on...

W-O, just rollin in it....

I GOT MINE!!! WOW! Bill, i really love your voice and the pickin' is excellent! Phoaks if you haven't ordered this one, you should. Great bunch of songs. "Spring On The Mississippi" has to be my fave of the moment and Paddy West is really close, too.

Anyone who'd like to add a note about Bill or his CD, on mp3, can reach the thread I started by clicking here.

Thanks, Bill, great songs!

...my 77 year old daddy downloaded your mp3 music and burned me a personal CD copy! I have really enjoyed it! Is that you playing the mountain dulcimer? Is it illegal to do what we did with your music? I haven't a clue...If so, I never met the old geezer in my life! Take him away!

Hey, thanks folks. Harpgirl, anybody's 77-year-old daddy who knows how to download and burn cd's is worthy of sustained applause in my books. Please thank him for me. It's perfectly legal because the songs are all available for free download to do with as you will for non-profit purposes. The buy-a-CD option is for the convenience of those who want it, and to help subsidize the artist (who gets 50% of the purchase price.) Most highly successful mp3.com artists actually make a lot more money through the Payback for Playback program, which pays them a few cents for every song listened to or downloaded off their site (the money comes directly from mp3.com, not the listener).

There is no mountain dulcimer played anywhere on any of my tracks. I think you're hearing my Martin O-18 in DADGAD, which is extremely mid-rangey. That is me playing it, though. Unless it's the cittern part on "Paddy West", played by James Stephens. Or my mandola on "Long Walk Home" or "Gogama". I think that about exhasts the possibilities.

After I got my own initial copy in the mail last week, I rearranged the song order and will continue to tinker with some of the tracks.

The new promotional project for the coming week is "511 Highway" which was recorded in The Schoolhouse last month and has a great off-the-cuff mandolin solo by guest picker Dan Whiteley.

All for now...

Willie-O

...boy do I feel like a fool, for the umpteenth time today! I could have sworn that was a dulcimer. I'll have to use that tuning. I love it! My daddy would be happy to tell you how smart he is, by the way!

Just wanted to say I am still really enjoying my Willie-O CD and hope that some of the newbies will take a look at and listen to the links. (I am assuming they are still good links. Hope I am not wrong.)

May I say, again, well done, Bill!

I was wondering why I was getting like a zillion hits on my mp3 site this week. Now I see it's thanks to the indefatigable katlaughing, who is a higher-powered publicist than she probably realizes.

...and I am not kidding. Have a look at the Ottawa world-folk charts which are directly attributable to kat saying nice things about me...I'm not usually in the top ten, but now...(click on the link to fill in the rest of the sentence.)

Man I love Mudcat and the great people here. I don't get to spend nearly enough time in this scene anymore.

As for the "new" CD, The Grindstone Tapes, it is a compilation of some 4-track recordings from the late 80's, mostly made with my pal Rebecca Barclay on vocals and some guitar. We haven't put custom graphics up for it yet, and we might add more music (I don't see much of Becca these days, she lives in Toronto and ran off to Ireland a few weeks ago, bit of a free spirit you understand) so you might want to hold off ordering it, The Grindstone Tapes is kind of a pre-official release. Becca is supposed to be adding some artwork and she is in fact a rather great artist, so I'd wait! The title is because we recorded some of it on Grindstone Island, a kind of summer-camp retreat for lefties in the middle of the Rideau Lakes.
