Help: transposing in Noteworthy

Well, everyone, I have been having a good time preparing enjoyable versions of the the ancient Spanish "Cantigas de Santa Maria." There is a party coming up, and people are going to play them on recorder, flute, harp, guitar, mandolin, viola da gamba and percussion. Should be fun.

However, I have a problem with Noteworthy. Say, for example, I have a Cantiga in B-flat. This is not a good key for us, so let's say I want to change it to C. When I try following the directions, I wind up with a perverted version which is bristling with accidentals and sounds funny. This happens whether or not I change the key signature before raising the piece 2 (or should it be 3?) "semitones."

I just love their directions - they spend 75% of the text on a strange scenario where someone wants to play trumpet along with a computer. Give me a break!

I tried asking for their help - it was a waste of time.

you raise 2 semitones in the transpose section, I think you've found that..... but it won't sound the transposition until you go into the midi ('staff properties' ' midi') and reset the transpose there to '0'

the accitdental are probably because of 'enharmonic notes' which the program is not sure what to do with...

If you use "Audit Accidentals" from the "Tools" menu, that should do the trick. It's in the Help, but only if you can find it! It says:

"This command can be used to remove any unnecessary accidentals assigned to notes in the active staff. It compares all notes with the running key signature, and if the accidental it contains matches the running signature, then the accidental is removed.

Thanks for the suggestions and offers of help. I will look for "Audit Accidentals." As for sending the music to other people, I haven't yet figured out how to make Juno do that.

So far I have 17 Cantigas ready to go. At present, I transpose them by entering them into an old program I have called EZ Piano. EZ Piano is great at transposing. Then I use Noteworthy to print an elegant finished product. However, it would be nice to be able to skip the extra steps involved in using two programs.

I give the Cantigas informal names. For example, we have the Rippling Cantiga, the Bellydance Cantiga, the Chiming Cantiga, the Lullabye Cantiga and the Cantiga of the Seven Veils. We may have to have a second party so we can play them all.

leenia, what is your initial source of the music? If you are getting them as MIDI files, they can be opened directly in NWC and transposed very easily. This is a three step process - first, you do the staff transpose command, then replace the key signature, then audit accidentals. It's really a quick and straightforward process once you get used to it.

I wrote down your instructions, Ivan, and tried them. I tried changing a new little tune from C to G. The first question is, is that 8 semitones or 7? I tried 8 and got G#,A#,C,C# D# E. (Obviously not in G) "Audit accidentals" did nothing. Then I told it to go down one semitone (G# to G etc) and it popped in a key signature of six sharps, then turned the notes into an equally meaningless mishmash.

I am beginning to wonder if anyone there plays an instrument.

from their FAQ: Is there an easy way to change the key of a song?

1.Use Tools: Force Accidentals to assign an accidental to each note. 2.Select the key signature, and change it using Alt+Enter. If no key exists, then use Insert: Key Signature (or K) to enter a key signature at the beginning of the staff. 3.Select Tools: Audit Accidentals to update notes to the key. 4.If necessary to change the enharmonic spelling of notes, select Tools: Transpose Staff and specify an interval of "0".
