You wouldn't be involved in a play called 'Waiting for the Parade' would you? 'Marta' sings lili Marlene in German against the rest of the cast singing in English ... very effective. (I played 'Marta') .....LL

Two comments to MMario's links:
- the first leads to a postwar (II) slightly anti-American parody (it would make even more sense with the last line being: 'noch eins, Lily Marlene,...) and not to the original German lyrics.
- the second link is great; you'll find not only the lyrics in English and German, you'll find also the history of that song (in English and German).

Somewhat related . . Bill Caddick wrote a very powerful, disturbing song called "Lili Marlene walks away", about a reality of military occupation . . Well worth looking out for.

Interesting that you should mention Bill Caddick. I am learning John Of Dreams right now. I noticed in the DT that the information says the Tchaikovsky melody to the song originally came from Piva Piva, a lullaby from southern Italy. Any more information about Bill Caddick songs? GeorgeH, where can I find "Lili Marlene Walks Away"?

There's a book, out of print, called "The Great Lili" (1979, Strawberry Hill Press, dist by Stackpole Books) that you'd probably find worthwhile. It's been some time since I went through it, but it certainly covers the history of the song, and I remember versions of the lyrics.

I've never seen "Lili Marlene Walks Away" in print so I guess I might have to transcribe it to post it here!

Probably Bill's best-known song is "Unicorns" - I know that's been posted here; also his "The writing of Tipperary" was discussed here, and if it wasn't actually posted then there was a link to its words on Suzanne's web site.

He's one of the finest songwriters the UK has produced; I've no problem with putting him on a par with, say, Richard Thompson.

This page (click) had partial lyrics to several Bill Caddick songs. This one is pretty ragged. Can anybody fill in the blanks?

Lili Marlene Walks Away
(Bill Caddick)

Joseph is the ? song just selling souvenirs in the war
Outside a bombed out church where no one wants to worship anymore
Beneath the houses and rueing flats
When men and children chants like celebrats
They give our thresher is their say
Lili change the legspulls on her nylons and prepares to walk away
Lili Marlene walks away
Jesus is the old woman begging on the corner on the street
Where the little children sell themselves to anyone they like to meet
A piece of chokolade ?
A candybar ? little ?
Our father ? down in ?
Lili combs her hair looks on her party dress and turns to walk away
Maria is the virgin of the madress in a backroom upperstairs
? comming queues at night in the ? between her legs and upper breast
A pack of cigarettes buys in the sex
A ? board ?
Our father ? down in ?
Lili checks the lipestick gives the greatest smile and turns to walk away
Out to buy the milk to feed his baby growing thinner everyday
The quicker to come ? along the lonely alley way
A gets ? death of night
Communion underneath the broken light
I keep them come to us today
Lili smooths the stockings in a state of brace and slowly walks away

February 12, 2008
Debra Cowan just came out with a recording of this song, which will be on her yet-to-be-released CD. Here's what I hear on her recording.

Lili Marlene Walks Away
(Bill Caddick)

Joseph is the legless soldier selling souvenirs of the war
Outside a bombed-out church where no one wants to worship anymore.
Beneath the houses and ruined flats
Women and children crouch like cellar rats.
"Give us our daily bread," they pray.
Lili paints her nails, puts on her nylons, and prepares to walk away;
Lili Marlene walks away.

Jesus is the old woman begging on the corner on the street
Where the little children sell themselves to anyone for a bite to eat.
A piece of chocolate or chewing gum,
A candy bar or any little crumb;
"Our Father, where art Thou?" they pray.
Lili combs her hair, puts on her party dress, and turns to walk away;
Lili Marlene walks away.

Maria is the virgin on the mattress in a back room up the stairs
Disciples come in queues at night and kneel between her legs and offer prayers.
A pack of cigarettes buys innocence;
A jar of coffee for the sacraments;
"Forgive our trespasses," they pray.
Lili checks her lipstick, gives her brightest smile, and quickly walks away.
Lili Marlene walks away.

Out to buy the milk to feed his baby growing in her every day,
A quick encounter on a dustbin lid along a lonely alleyway
Against a barrack wall in dead of night,
Communion underneath the broken light;
"Thy kingdom come to us," they pray.
Lili smoothes her stockings in a state of grace and slowly walks away.
Lili Marlene walks away.
Lili Marlene walks away.
Lili Marlene walks away.

Nice recording, Deb!

MMario, the lyrics you linked to above (in the DT) are the lyrics to a German parody, not the original song.
The link you gave for "several versions" does have the full German lyrics and an English version that's pretty close to an actualy translation, as well as the "officia" English version.

Actually, MMario, the real German lyrics ARE in the DT here:
Lili Marleen.

The link you posted was to "Lili Marlene (informal)" - which is the parody.

One or two of the details may have been wrong, but the song told a greater truth. As a response to Lady Astor's ignorant and cruel remarks it's pretty classy. I like it too.

Alan, I think it's Lady Astor's remark which is regarded as apocryphal. If it's not I'd like to find some proof of where and when she said this.

She did deny making the remarks later. But the story/rumour was pretty widespread at the time (hence the song) and it was easily believed as many people say it was in keeping with her (snobbish) character.

I got cut off. No one has ever provided any written evidence of Lady Astor's remarks. Thus I regard the story is apocryphal and politically motivated at best and libelous at worst. Christopher Sykes biography is worth reading.

I think these are the right lyrics for the song - they certainly seem to make more sense than the rather bizarre transcription below!

Lili Marlene Walks Away
(Bill Caddick)

Joseph is the legless soldier selling souvenirs of the war
Outside a bombed out church where no one wants to worship anymore
Beneath the houses and ruined flats
Women and children crouch like cellar rats
Give us our daily bread they pray

Our Father, where art thou? they pray
Lili combs her hair puts on her party dress and turns to walk away
Lili Marlene walks away

Disciples come in queues at night to kneel between her legs and offer prayers
A pack of cigarettes buys innocence
A jar of coffee for the sacraments
Forgive our trespasses they pray
Lili checks her lipstick gives her brightest smile and quickly walks away
Lili Marlene walks away

How to buy the milk to feed his baby growing in her every day
A quick encounter on a dustbin lid along a lonely alleyway
Against a barrack wall at dead of night
Communion underneath the broken light
Thy kingdom come to us they pray
Lili smoothes her stockings in a state of grace and slowly walks away
Lili Marlene walks away
Lili Marlene walks away
