Subject: RE: Dolly Collins, David Munrow From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 15 Nov 00 - 04:11 AM This thread title brought back memories. In 1968, it would have been, the first time the now Mrs S and myself went out as a couple was to a Shirley and Dolly Collins concert in Aberystwyth. Probably wouldn't have gone myself except there wasn't much in the way of visiting music so I tended to go to anything. If the old memory is working I think it was actually supposed to be Arthur Brown (of "Fire" fame)but he cancelled (probably set himself alight at last). Found myself enjoying it, didn't one of them play something like an Indian harmonium? Realised there was something in the English tradition thing, even though I still prefer jazz, blues and the s-word. RtS |

Subject: RE: Dolly Collins, David Munrow From: Peter T. Date: 15 Nov 00 - 08:42 AM I am not sure it was much of a mystery. His friends were shocked, but not surprised (I was connected to them very peripherally through a close relative who was a member of the Consort). yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Dolly Collins, David Munrow From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 16 Jun 23 - 03:05 PM One of the ways that David Munrow came to my attention was in providing the soundtrack for the BBC series, Elizabeth Regina. I tuned in to see Glenda Jackson taking on the title role. Today word is out of Glenda Jackson's death, at a ripe old age and after a long and astonishing accomplished life. And now I cannot think of the Elizabeth Regina series without hearing David Munrow's Early Music Consort. |

Subject: RE: Dolly Collins, David Munrow From: GUEST,MikeofNorthumbria (sans cookie) Date: 18 Jun 23 - 05:28 PM David Munrow was involved in many remarkable musical events. For example, on the Young Tradition's record "Galleries", he accompanied them brilliantly on 'The Agincourt Carol'. Furthermore (as stated above) he played a key role in some of Shirley and Dolly Collins' classic recordings. Also worth noting was his wonderful background music for the BBC's Radio version of 'The Hobbit'. I saw him perform live only once - in Sunderland - and found his energy and zest as impressive as his technical wizardry (on a bewildering variety of instruments). His premature death was a great loss to the world - but we still have his music to enjoy, and to learn from. Ave et vale David! |
Subject: RE: Dolly Collins, David Munrow From: Manitas_at_home Date: 18 Jun 23 - 06:04 PM I used to play his melodies on a kazoo. Then I found the Early Music shop and switched to cornemuse and cornettino (both of which I still have). He gave me a love of early music which eventually led me to traditional folk music. |
