I have been looking at my new X-Mas Homespun Tape catalog and I am considering a video on flatpicking. My concern is that some great guitarists are not always great teachers. There are tapes by Russ Barenberg, David Grier, Norman Blake, Dan Crary and Steve Kaufman. Has anyone used one of these tapes and if so, any comments on the overall quality, presentation of information,etc...? Thank you for any comments. Tom

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them Tom. These folks don't need to be great communicators verbally. Everything gets slowed down and you can see EXACTLY what they're doin'. Beats tablature 100 to 1.

I have the Steve Kaufman one which is flat picking for beginners but gets into some more interesting things further into the tape. It's excellent! Steve's a great, methodical teacher, and really takes his time breaking everything down including all aspects of the technique. He's also an excellent flat picker. You wouldn't be sorry investing in this one.

Tom, the only ones I have used are several different things by Kaufman. I cannot speak for the others, but Kaufman is really good. If you decide to go that way, I would recommend either the 3 Video tapes, "Learning to Flatpick" or if you want CD's the Parking Lot Series is also very good. Either will start you out at a beginner's level. All you will need to know are some basic chords. He'll take it from there.

About the others, I would assume that Rick has used materials by others besides Kaufman. I will say this. If it's from Homespun, it's going to be good. Happy Traum is committed to putting out good materials. If you prefer the styles of one of the others, that may be the best way for you to go. As for me, if I could just learn to play "sorta, kinda" like Steve, even at a beginner/intermediate level, MAN....!!!

I have bought a lot of the Stefan Grossman Co. tapes for my library, so please keep making suggestions, anybody. They go like hotcakes, and I came under some fire for spending a lot of $$ on them, so any help identifying the very best on any instrument is much appreciated. -- MA

I suspected that the Grossman tapes might be pretty good as he has put out a lot of them. Is there any style this guy doesn't play? I still can't make up my mind but thanks for all your comments. Tom

This would be an appropriate nmoment to point out that Tony MacManus, less well-known but every bit as accomplished as any of the aforementioned, has recently released two instructional videos on Stefan Grossman's label. A must for aspiring Celtic guitarists.
