Subject: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: Easy Rider Date: 17 Nov 00 - 09:02 AM I'm playing my first paying gig ever, (Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar, Folk Music and Country Blues) on Friday, December 8, 2000, at the Good Coffee House of the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West (at 2nd St.), Brooklyn, NY. ( www.bsec.org 718-768-2972). I hope you some of you, in driving distance of Brooklyn, will come out and cheer for me. The evening starts at 8:00 PM, and I will be one of six performers that night, so I may, litteraly, have fifteen minutes. The evening is a benefit for the BSEC Sunday School. Tickets are only $8.00 at the door. Coffee is free, and snacks and desserts are usually for sale. Come early; get good seats. I look forward to sharing some of my favorite music with my friends. Thanx, |

Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: Naemanson Date: 17 Nov 00 - 09:31 AM Go for it! Relax, enjoy and don't concern yourself over petty details (like there isn't much of an audience). |
Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: Geoff the Duck Date: 17 Nov 00 - 09:36 AM What a strange idea - singing folk songs without a goodly supply of beer on handpump! Best of luck with the gig Enjoy yourself Geoff the Duck |
Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: Mrrzy Date: 17 Nov 00 - 09:53 AM You go, guy! And let us know how it goes, oh do! |
Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: GUEST,Brian Date: 17 Nov 00 - 09:53 AM Sorry I won't be able to make it (a bit far across the big pond!). Best of luck anyway. I agree with Geoff's point about the beer though. I once did a Sunday afternoon gig in a church hall. Sang all afternoon on cups of tea! At least, I got to the pub for lunch time (in the bad old days of 2pm sunday closing). Cheers Brian |

Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: paddymac Date: 17 Nov 00 - 01:03 PM ditto - ditto - ditto all the above. It is an uncommon thing to play most varities of "folk" in a "dry" atmosphere, but you can catch as good a buzz from a receptive audience as you can from the work of some of creator's least creations (yeast), and without the caloric penalty. |

Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: Easy Rider Date: 17 Nov 00 - 11:54 PM "Louis Collins" is a song, by Mississippi John Hurt, one of my favorite guitarists. I play it, but not well enough. I plan to do two of my other favorite MJH songs, though, "Payday" and "Nobody Cares For Me". I'll also do Dave Van Ronk's "Green, Green, Rocky Road" and "Cocaine". If I feel real good, I'll even attempt "The St. Louis Tickle". Thanks for all the good wishes and encouragement. If any of you come to the show, please come up and introduce yourselves afterwards. Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: bflat Date: 18 Nov 00 - 12:03 AM Easy, Warm wishes for your first. Don't forget to get a picture. Ask a friend to bring a camera. Love Van Ronk....nice choices. Oh and smile a lot. Enjoy! bflat |
Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: Geoff the Duck Date: 18 Nov 00 - 10:49 PM I always thought that Lewis Collins was the bloke in "the Professionals" - I was never quite sure who was "Bodie" and who was "Doyle", but they ran about on the telly a lot! He definitely played "Gavin" in the Cuckoo Waltz with Diane Keen and David Roper. Quack GtD. |

Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: Easy Rider Date: 21 Nov 00 - 08:51 AM My inflatable guitar! Yeah! It has a sweet sound (the sound of friendship), but my inflatable doll plays it all the time and won't let me use it. |
Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: Little Neophyte Date: 21 Nov 00 - 09:12 AM My inflatable guy doll just loves playing with his inflatable instrument too. Little Notty Neo |
Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: Willie-O Date: 21 Nov 00 - 09:29 AM Have a good one there Alex...I don't know why people think it's so weird to play folk music without alcohol there...they do call them coffee-houses after all. Usually the difference is that you have an audience instead of a noisy social club, people shut the f*** up and listen! I am a bit concerned though about the free coffee. Caffeine is a drug you know. I hope there's a strictly enforced age limit and a three-cup limit for everyone present (otherwise there will be those who can't hold their caffeine and won't shut the f*** up about it.) With so many performers, if you a choice of when to play, ask for either the second set or right-after-intermission, the peak times for audience attention. Go for it guy |
Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: GUEST,Liam's Brother Date: 21 Nov 00 - 10:48 AM Easy Rider mon frere! Keep in the back of your mind that EVERYBODY in the audience came to enjoy your company and your music and you'll have a good time. As I'm sure you know, the performance room at The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture is a lovely place to play, so just lean back, smile and have a great gig. Sorry to say I have another plan for that night.
All the best, |
Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: P Mitchell@work Date: 21 Nov 00 - 04:23 PM What a great, heart warming thread! Best of luck with the gig. It would be great to know how you got on. I bet the time on stage just flashes by, so make sure you start to enjoy it at least an hour before you go up to play! I'm about to do my first big gig for years. It'll be at the Pagan Fed' National Conference. So, if anyone's going, I'm on at 8:30 pm ish. I'm nervous as hell and would like to meet some friendly people on the day. paul |

Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: Easy Rider Date: 22 Nov 00 - 09:35 AM You're right, Liam's Brother, The Meeting Room at BSEC is a "lovely place to play". I was married on that spot 22 years ago, so I expect to feel right at home. I'm sorry you can't be there. I hope you can come to the Good Coffee House on May 4, when Larry Pattis and El Mcmeen will be performing. They are GREAT fingerstyle and Celtic guitarists. |
Subject: RE: My Fifteen Minutes of Fame From: GUEST,Fretless Date: 22 Nov 00 - 11:38 AM Break a leg, 'Rider! The Good Coffee House is a great place to play. I used to book the gigs and cook the books there about 20 years ago. It is wonderful that the program is still going on, including the free coffee policy. As for the mix of beverages and music, the GCH's policy was a dream compared to what life was like running music programs while dealing with under- and over-aged drunks at the Eagle Tavern in Manhattan. And the GCH provided lots of opportunities for after-concert BYOB staff/performer/friends play time after the formal concerts. Enjoy! |
