Subject: Lyr Add: SHAKIN' IT TO THE GROUND
From: Mark Cohen
Date: 18 Nov 00 - 12:21 AM

I heard this song at a workshop at the 1990 Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, Washington. Got it on tape, but the woman who sang it said she never learned who wrote it or anything else about the song. Anybody got any info? Sorry, I'm not good at posting tunes.

SHAKIN' IT TO THE GROUND

Preacher man shoutin' that gospel out, thumpin' that bible, pumpin' that crowd
Hallelujah, shout out loud, shakin' it to the ground
Me and my baby sittin' in a pew, shoutin' amen and hallelu
Gettin' into that whoopdedoo, shakin' it to the ground

CHORUS: Shake, shake, shakin', shake, shake, shakin'
No more foolin' 'round, shakin' it to the ground

Well in the garden there was a snake, an apple he wanted Eve to take
So he gave that tree a shake, shakin' it to the ground
Eve she gave her man a bite, it opened up his appetite
They spent that very night shakin' it to the ground (CHORUS)

Samson he was very strong, but only when his hair was long
Delilah shaved him to the bone, shakin' it to the ground
But when his hair grew back again, in the heathen temple he made a stand
Took a pillar in each hand, shakin' it to the ground (CHORUS)

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho, he said, "Those walls have got to go"
So he told the boys to blow, shakin' it to the ground
Well, some blew sharp and some blew flat, Joshua sang a line of scat
The walls fell over just like that, shakin' it to the ground (CHORUS)

Me and my baby went back home, doused the lights and killed the phone
In the bedroom all alone, shakin' it to the ground
My baby told me, verily, that she would like to marry me
'Cause I shake better than Jerry Lee, shakin' it to the ground (CHORUS)

There may have been some folk processing going on here, since "scat" is from the 40s and Jerry Lee is obviously from the 50s. Any help out there?

Aloha,
Mark

Well, it's been almost a year since I last requested info about this song, and still no luck. Lots of new members in the meantime, so maybe someone will recognize it. I sent a Noteworthy Composer file of the tune to Joe Offer, so it should be available. Any help?

Aloha,
Mark

You might ask Masato, Dicho, ddw, and Earl via PM... I'll keep an eye out. The MIDI is not on the Mudcat MIDI page yet-- can you send me a copy of the tune?

~Susan

I've been looking for it, but to my regret can't find it.
