Harpgirl!

I would not expect too many details from Derry, NH. They are very non-committal folk around there. Did you know there's both a Derry and a Londonderry, NH! How's that for non-committal? Our only hope is Barry Finn.

Seriously, sorry to be missing all the great singing that must be going on there. Bonnie and I both had gigs tonight otherwise we would bellowing all over Barry's house right now.

All the best,
Dan

I left at about 1:mumble. They were still singing, (Barry and family, RiB, Kendall, CamiSu, SINSULL, MaryMac, Joe Offer, Naemanson, John Nolan and people I'm forgetting) and still had plenty of great food - not to mention enough beverages to float a battleship. My voice had had it, and I wanted to get home before I fell asleep. Everyone appeared to be having a great time - I sure was. We didn't have one huge pile of people at one time - just a moderate pile Someone would leave and someone would show up, and there was music all day and all night.

BTW, Joe Offer got Barry's cookie back for him, so maybe we ought to start a "welcome new member" thread.

I'd write more, but I'm wiped and I need to crawl off to bed. There is brunch tomorrow.

It was great! I was there too, Jeri! And meeting so many wonderful people was such a trip... added to Jeris list: BatGoddess & her person Tom, Peg from Boston, Susan A-R, the Woodchucks, Lucius from NH, assorted lurkers. The privilege of having Ewan McVicar and Debra Cowan at my house on Friday and bringing them to Barry's on Saturday was wonderful. And the music- on and on and on. The Woodchucks were there, too. Wavestar, I really enjoyed your mum- she told a great story, and we discovered mutual acquaintences in the sheep world!
The Manchester UK connection didn't work, but we spent some time on PalTalk, singing with Alison of OZ, morticia, Jon Freeman, Mrs. Duck, and a few others.
I left early with my daughter, knackered but happy. The golden moment for me was sitting on the couch, listening to the music, looking around, and thinking, these are people I know and care about and feel so comfortable with in 3D- what a place!

Animaterra, I was just trying to list the people still awake and singing when I left. If I had tried to list everyone...oy.

The story...about the little girl who went down to the sea shore to fish instead of the lake, and had a run-in with the People From Under the Ice (can't remember the name) was great! Wavestar, your Mom is one heck of a storyteller!

Kendall did Loreena, and had a couple of fiddles playing along. Let me tell you, Susan A-R is one of those people who can find just the right notes to play to make a song sound like magic! Lucius started Banish Misfortune, and she did the most incredible 2nd part...

Ewan's song, "All the Tunes in the World," to the tune of Southwind, with everyone gathered 'round the computer...I hope that came across OK on PalTalk, because it sure sounded great where I was.

It was worth it to go just to hear Peg sing Bob Franke's "Two Little Girls" (not sure if title's correct) - not many singers give me goose bumps.

I'll shut up before I start naming every single person and song. My memory's not that good anyway, and there were lots of people and songs...

...oh boy!!! What songs were sung? By whom? Joe Offer was there???? He hasn't been home for months! Was BruceO there? Did Barry sing any work songs? Was Margarte Christl there? Did she sing? What was the highlight for you Jeri?

I think I may go back in a bit. I listed some of the highlights, but there were just too many to remember! Me singing Fire Down Below and having everyone join in - there's nothing like that feeling of support you get when you start a song and wonder if you'll be left high and dry on the chorus, and then everyone joins in loud and strong and lifts you up with their voices...

BruceO - no; Margarte (?) - no, I don't think so. Barry did a couple of sea shanties, but I don't remember other types of work songs. He had to be dragged into the room because he was running around doing "host" things. Joe Offer was really there - many of us saw him. :-)

THANK YOU BARRY FINN--ET AL.

So nice to put names with faces, and hear sone great tunes, many of which were "new" to me. I know that I've heard Barry's sword dancing song before, but years of children's doggerel has rinsed it from my mind. A great diversity of song and style, and tons of guitarists with room for everyone. A personal highlight for my wife was listening to people sing into (and out of) Barry's computer. Our one complaint, not enough time--oh and my four year old son didn't like the Bourbon Balls (his loss).

Harpy and I have about the same exuberance level I think.........C'mom, c'mon.....we gotta' know it ALL!!!!

Bottom line is that its so wonderful to hear of freinds enjoying each other's company that it gives everyone a boost just reading the reports. Neat details I like are hearing about SusanA-R......I have enjoyed her for so long here and its easy to believe she "knows the right notes".......just one of those feelings you get about people. Thanks Jeri, you're always great for filling us in and "Spaw really do appreciate it."

And Lucius......Have your son send ME the Bourbon balls!!! Sinsull's I believe?

I just got home from a fantastic time. I met many of my old friends for the first time. The music was great! The song circle was well under way when I arrived around 4:00 PM. It was still going strong though greatly diminished when I staggered off to my bed at 2:30 AM.

I had a lovely time and want to make sure that Barry and Justine feel the appreciation for hosting the party. They did a great job.

And now I have heard Woodchuck's Revenge (Midchuck, Mizchuck, and Bigchuck), Jeri, Bat Goddess, Animaterra, Dan Schotz, John Nolan, Kendall, Lucius, Sinsull, Marymac, Susan A-R, Peg, Barry, Joe Offer, Roger From Baltimore, and several more who I heard but never learned their names.

Also in attendance and performing were Jeff Warner, Bruce MacIntosh, and Dave Hollowell.

I hope this is only the first of many Mudcat gatherings I attend.

I sang, as near as memory serves me, Crossing the Line, Eat Bertha's Mussels, Christmas In The Trenches, Dramamine, Polly Von, Jeanie C, Mary Mac, Beans Taste Fine, and possibly one or two more. I sang along with most of the others.

(And for those who worried about my decision to sleep in my car, I did fine. I had a bed made up in the back of my wagon (two thick foam pads, two sleeping bags, and two pillows). I slept warm and comfortable. It had an aura reminiscent of camping which is one of my favorite activities. There were also several people who expressed concern about the cold. It was not cold. The temperature never got below 25 degrees F and for me that is only chilly. The measure of my comfort is that I slept 6 full hours when I expected to up and gone by 7:00!)

This was an amazing event and enormous fun. I am still in a haze from it. Jeri, Kendall, Batgoddess, Barry, Naemanson, Joe and so many more, some of whom I never did meet formally, It was such a pleasure to meet you all and to share the music and companionship in such a fine setting. I am hoping that we can have a similar gathering in Vermont in the spring sometime. MMario, you should avoid reading this thread, for if you due, your green hue will surely never fade.

Thanks again, Barry & Justine!!! What a lovely party! Great to finally put faces to people I feel are old friends -- and better yet, sto sing with them!

Let's see, Jeri "forgot" (yeah, sure) the words to her parody (from an idea by moi) of "Bay of Biscay", so we started out by singing "Bay of Biscay" instead. I also murdered "Living in Braintree with You In Methuen Is Almost Like Living In Lowell" before the song circle actually got started. Then, what? Tom (Curmudgeon) and I did "Dundee Weaver" and next time round the circle, something, then "Three Score and Ten" and "Backside of Nantucket Point" and left right after I did "Pour Me Another Tequila, Sheila" (well, somebody started cowboy songs and Shel Silverstein was mentioned . . .) Oh, yeah, the one I forgot was "Back and the Sides."

My "person" (thanks, Animaterra!) Curmudgeon/Tom sang "Cold and Raw" and McPherson's Lament (with incredible fiddle & vocal backup!!!) and "The Devil and the Farmer's Wife."

Curmudgeon apologises for having forgotten to sing the "Thanksgiving Round." It would have been perfect.

Gee, Barry, I guess it's too late to come back for brunch.

Not much singing today, but it was good to sit around and chat since nobody did much of that yesterday. I also had a nice argument with John Nolan.

Naemanson, are you reading this? Guess who got to take home the leftover bourbon balls? HAHAHAHAHA!!! (Thanks, Justine!) Now I just have to figure out how to give SINSULL back her tin, which appears to be an antique.

I did Prospect, Providence (written by Keith Marsden), Fire Down Below, Shine Like a Diamond, Oh Sinner Man, and I think that's it.

Spaw, Barry has a Wiemerhienererer...Wiemerheinee..one of those pinkish dogs. Nice dog, but drools a bit. She seemed to love the attention (and the food).

And since I'm so brain dead I haven't said it yet, THANK YOU, FINN FAMILY!!!

Ditto. THANKS BARRY AND JUSTINE AND KIDS (please pardon me, daughter-child-woman because I knew your name until shortly after we left this morning, but am having a name-disorganisation moment, and you did a lovely job with the theme from Romeo and Juliet. Very brave as well)Yes I had a wonderful time, and then discovered that Susan A-R and I have ties in Cyprus, (I know her AFS brother from Famagusta) and through her brother, who is also hosting this year.

I also found out what song circles are like! I've never done this before. Not really being sure what was required, and being up to my eyeballs the last month or two or twelve , I just did what is hardwired, which is mostly stories. And Jeri, the girl is Allashua, and the nasty people under the water are the quallapilliut, so now you know why you couldn't remember the names. I had to write them before I could remember, myself. But it was great fun to put faces to names. However if we ever host one of these things it better be when it's warm, cause our livingroom is half the size of Barry's.

Hugs to everyone I missed!

Cami Su

Sounds like it, Greyeyes. The rum ones I make have sugar, a little cocoa, mashed up vanilla wafers and rum - can't remember anything else. Form them into little balls, and them roll them in stuff - nuts or sugar. I wonder how Frangelico (hazelnut liquer) would work...

Thanks for the names, CamiSu - I never would have remembered them on my own.

I'll second what you said about Barry's daughter (who's name I never did learn - I'm sorry). Not only is she pretty and brave, but patient and polite to annoying adults (me) who asked her to give up the computer. His son also seemed to be very quiet about us taking over the room with the TV (and games). (At that age, I would have raised holy heck.) Barry and Justine, ya got some great kids.

Oh, and by the way, it was Bruce *McIntyre* and Dave *Hallowell*, Naemanson. I meant to make that CX before, but then I got side-tracked in songs. Susan A-R, what was that wonderful song you did standing in the doorway? I loved it, want to hear it again, learn it or something, and I can't even wrap my brain around the subject. (Information overload.)

We could make all sorts of nudge nudge wink wink comments about bourbon balls, but . . . (but actually I think they were all made about 30 years ago). They were delish -- Jeri's just really lucky they have no calories. (Me, too. I certainly did my share on polishing them off!)

Marymac and I left at about 4AM when Barry announced he was going to bed. I never expected a Mudcat man to turn down a night with two Mud felines but both Brett and Kendall did. Just as well. Marymac, like me, does not snore. I am too tired to give a recount. But thoroughly happy and sad that I went and it is over. I will give my version of the tale tomorrow.
To the Finns: THANK YOU. The night was magic. You made something very special happen.
Jeri - the tin is always part of my gift. Enjoy it. And think of me when you fill it with pennies or pens or whatever. The only way I accept them back is when they are filled with something homemade.

Jeri, the deal I struck with Sinsull is that you have to fill that tin with rum balls for the next gathering! She just forgot to mention that.

If Bruce and/or Dave sees my goof on their names, I apologize and plead exhaustion.

Just a quick pop-in. Thanks to Barry and Justine for the get-to-gether. The food and drink was ample, the house warm, and the company excellent. I sang and listened for about 12 hours, from 2 PM to 2 AM. I had a long drive the next day and preferred to sleep in a bed rather than at the wheel.

OH, it was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!! Most of the time I sat between Midchuck and Kendall. Both have wry and distorted sense of humor so I truly felt at home. Midchuck has written some great parodies. He sang "And My Socks with a Gun" a parody of that moldy bluegrass song "Fox on the Run". It's the story of getting up to see if that sound was really an intruder and being on the "cellar steps in my boxers and my socks with a gun". He parodied Merle Haggard's "Momma Tried" with a song about too much cholesterol called "Momma Fried". And he knows some great cowboy songs. The Woodchucks Revenge sang together, but they seemed less "a group" than just three friends having a good time who just happen to know the same songs.

Well, my boss walked in and it's time to go to work. Whew! What fun I had!!!

Roger's rendition of "Four Little Pigs" was classic. And his "Not Built For Speed" (Title?) was ...what's the word? Painfully close to home? TEE HEE I was late and had to settle for "Socks and a Gun" on CD on the way home. Max might want to play it on the Radio one night - too funny for words. And I missed Kendall's "Lorena" but heard "Phoebe Snow". It hurts to hear him sing it. (For the record: Sinclair is my mother's maiden name: Sin; Sullivan is mine: Sull. The rest is all rumor).Susan A-R did a plaintive "I Never Will Marry" - so pretty. More as it comes back.

Kendall,
Fishing for compliments? OK. You made the song so real that it made me wonder if every man has a "Phoebe" tucked away somewhere in his mind. AND I won't listen to Bryan Bowers singing it anymore. His version isn't even second rate. You made my heart ache - that's what I meant by the "pain". Isn't that what you trying to do? GEEZ! From now on the best you'll hear is "Kendall did a nice job on..."
Which reminds me of another nice job: Brett doesn't only sing beautifully, he can cook too. That stew was meant to be eaten on a cold night around a campfire with a bottle of something good being passed around and a banjo player nearby. Brett is a big, fuzzy, handsome man somewhat like a bear. But from the way he carresses his guitar, I would trust him with a newborn baby. If I don't get back to work, I'll get fired. And I haven't even begun to muse about Susan and her fiddle, Jeri and her fiddle (Members of the "Fiddlin Floozies"), CamiSu and her magnificent, commanding tales. And Ms. Woodchuck who is dwarfed by her menfolk but holds her own beautifully. And the children. There are a few tales to be told there too.

It was a great time and I wish i could have stayed longer (arrived around 1 pm on Saturday with Judy and had to leave at 6:30 pm).

Met some great people, ate some great food, heard soem great songs!

Thanks so much to Barry and Justine and their daughter Natalie and their son (I forget his name, sorry) and their awesome DOG for having us to their beautiful home and beings the most hospitable and laid-back hosts we could hope for.

Jeri: thanks! The title of that song, BTW is "I But a Little Girl."

Others I sang: The Wind that Shakes the Barley; Westlin' Winds; and Dark Alan (in Scots Gaelic). Had I stayed longer I would have liked to sing more...

High points for me, musically:

Jeri's singing "Fire Down Below" with all joining in: very powerful!

Kendall's song about Robin Hood...

Allison's song about Winter Solstice...

The song the Woodchucks did about Hank Williams, and the Girly Show at the Tunbridge Fair...

Roger from Baltimore's song about non-anorexic women...

Barry singing just about anything...

Ewan McVicar singing the song with the pig sounds!

I know I missed a lot of great music and will endeavor to stay longer next time!

MMario; I will be in Elmira during the Christmas holidays so let us all know what is happening! If I can borrow the car I may come to Skaneatles, you never know.

No, I was not fishing for compliments! Just pulling your leg because of the way you framed your statement. I knew exactly what you meant, but, I gotta keep up with you! Thanks for the compliment.

I'm still basking from the glow. Another wonderful thing was that the Finn daughter NATALIE and son GABE got along so well with my kids that they were able to last hours longer than I had expected! (This is also why I remember the Finn kids names, with gratitude!!). I still can hear Peg's lovely voice, Susan's enchanting fiddle, Jeri's powerful tones, Kendall's warm gravel, and the thick, rich, warm blending of voices and instruments that rang and rang and followed me all the way home! I shoulda taken someone up on the offer of a motel room floor, I had to leave far too early! Thanks again for an incredible day!

HHHMMMMPPPHHH! Thanks AT for reminding MaryMac and me that we couldn't even get the Mudcat women into our room. Jeri's voice suits her personality - all sure and strong and powerful. The shock is her violin. The sound creeps up on you and lulls you. Then with a start you realize where it is coming from - sweet, soft...and sure and strong and powerful. Sorry, I can't help it. I am still coming down off the cloud.

And Joe Offer who goes from shy and formal to devilish in the blink of an eye. And no matter who sings what, three notes into it he is nodding smiling and checking his notes to see if he has the chorus ready. He booms out his own selections and gently harmonizes with everyone else. Had to give him a big hug before I left. He was not the elf I expected and certainly can't be a clone of anyone - there can't be two.

Hey, Sinsull, I wasn't checking notes to see if I knew the choruses - I was checking to see how many Joe Glazer songs we sang...
More people need to know more stuff about Joe Glazer. I went to a museum in Lawrence, Mass., on Sunday and saw a movie about the "Bread and Roses" strike of 1912. the move credited Joe as the "labor troubadour." Good title for him. As far as I recall, the only Glazer song that was sung was "Mills of Marble" - but it was a particularly good song and a song particularly suited for the area where we were.

Gee, I thought they were all Joe Glazer songs.

Seriously, it was a good time, and a pleasure for a newbie mudcatter like myself to see faces and hear voices before getting to know only the names. It was also a pleasure to see some familiar faces.

I was there until about 8 o;clock, and wanted to stay longer, but had to get back to the White Mountains and be rested for the morning.

By the way, someone (Jeri, I think?) asked for the lyrics to one of my songs. I'd be glad to post it, but could you remind me which song it was you wanted the lyrics to?

As best I recall, I sang

Thomas of Winesbury Leave Time In the Old Days I Was Right (I thought I goofed the lyrics on that one, but people told me I was wrong, I was right all along.) Roustabout Survivor Leave A Song in the Darkness

and probably several others which don't pop to mind this moment.

Hands down highlight for me was Barry's song about kids with special needs. I'd love it if you decided to post the lyrics to that one, Barry - although I'll understand if you decide not to. It's a beautiful, haunting song. Thank you for singing it.

Dan

Dan, it was probably the song about the boats & fishermen. I love that song! I don't know as I've heard the title, but my memory is so bad I might have been told several times and spaced it. I'd love to sing it, but don't think I'd remember the tune. Anyhow, they lyrics are great and I'd be happy if I could have them to read. (You can let me know when the CD comes out. :-)

The song Barry did "You Wouldn't Know It To Look At Me," is in Aine's Mudcat Song Book here.

Sinsull,

The song you mention is called "Built for Comfort" by Willie Dixon. It isn't in the digital tradition. Could be a copyright issue.

It's two days later and I still have many warm memories. My only regret is I spent so much time singing that I hardly met those who came later. Perhaps another time.

Thanks for the compliments but especially about the cooking, Sins. Unfortunately I overcooked the stew and only provided store bought rolls to eat with it. When I do a stew I prefer to throw together some buttermilk biscuits and eat them dripping with honey and butter.

I'll make someone a great husban some day.

Oh and I've held quite a few newborn babies and I do treat them better than my guitar.

Except for that one time while also cooking a stew....

It's so fun to know you, Bret- the picture in my mind of you holding a baby in one arm while stirring the stew with the other... it's priceless... just remember which is the stirring hand!

Dan,
I missed you at the party but had the pleasure of hearing your CD on the way home. Really made me sad that I had arrived late! Was the lady on the tape with you at Derry?

Oh SINS, for crying out loud - he has a CD out? I coulda bought it. I also forgot to ask Ewan MacVicar about his book. Brett, that stew was great! I would have eaten a lot more of it if there hadn't been turky, lamb, beef, all those yummy whadya-call-'em h'ors d'oevres thingies that Susan A-R brought, fresh veggies, those lemon bars (who brought those - they were very good!), hermits, chocolate chip cookies, double chocolate cookies, salad, bundt cake with some sort of booze in it, and bourbon balls. (I think that must be about half of what was there.)

Now where the heck is Barry?
