I'm incredibly curious about black bluegrass...and am wondering what the threads have filtered out to.

Is there such a thing? Any easy links for the curious?

Thanks, Hot Banana Johnson (see "Your Bluesname" thread for explantation)

Nope. There wasn't the first time I saw this question on Mudcat, and there ain't now.

There may very well be ONE black band with three finger banjo, fiddle (or mandolin) String bass and acoustic guitar, singing Bluegrass songs, but they've never recorded, and have never surfaced at a Bluegrass Festival or Bluegrass Club.

As I mentioned, I saw two Black brothers from Halifax play some Bluegrass at the Country Music Store in Toronto years ago, and maybe they were known locally for a while, but nobody else seems to remember them.

Lots of string bands (MUCH different than Bluegrass) but no actual Bluegrass bands........for now.

On the other hand there is a fair amount of info on Japanese, Russian and especially Czech bands.

Rick

Michael, if you phone Ozzie Branscombe (a very friendly chap, who'll talk your ear off with details) at The Country Music Store in Toronto, on Danforth Avenue, (sorry I haven't got the number but operator info will get it for you) I think you'll find what you're looking for. Also ask him about Brent Williams, a black Bluegrass Fiddler who I played with years ago. (also a Maritimer and still playin') Brent would have a HUGE chunk of info.

Rick
