Ewan McVicar mentioned on the Derry NH thread that he enjoyed singing at my school last Friday, and I just want to make it easier for you folks who might be avoiding longer threads, and to proclaim loudly and with gratitude that my school kids had one of the best visits of all time from a musician! (Ask the 5th graders to think back on their favorites over the years and first they mention Recycled Percussion and second they mention Sandy and Caroline Paton!).
Ewan charmed the kids with a variety of instruments, from the guitar to the autoharp to the Philippine mouth bow and a jewsharp from Russia. He sang songs that to them sounded shocking (they loved them!):
Ye Canny Shove your Granny off a Bus
Today is Hogmanay (with the famous line about pushing Granny's face in the butter)

Other songs:
McPherson's Rant
I think I know a boy
a few songs of his own: Bananas (translated from the Swahili- really!)
If you see a crocodile

Thanks, Ewan, for delighting my students. And I echo his sentiments- any musicians who want to visit a school that loves to sing, pm me and we'll chat!

Which reminds me, does anyone know if Nigel Denver is still alive?

Well, I'm fairly sure I'm still alive, although rather stunned by the praise above. Nigel was still around and raising hell for his 60th birthday last year - down in Birmingham. (No, I was not there, but I heard it was happening.)
