Subject: Snowy River From: GUEST,GUEST,Ernest Date: 23 Nov 00 - 01:30 AM Hello everyone out there, a friend of mine is looking for a song named "Snowy River" which he heard years ago by Martin Wyndham-Reid (spelling ok?)A fragment of the lyrics was: "Give me a man who`s a man among men/whose doe is white colour and lay down his ... ?/we`ll blow us a mountain and build us a dam/greater and bigger than old Uncle Sam" The chorus goes: "Oh roll, roll, roll on your way/Snowy River roll on your way/roll on your way till judgement day/Snowy River roll" Can anybody provide me with the full lyrics, chords etc. or direct me to a website where I can find it? Thank you in advance and all the best Ernest |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Snowy River From: Bob Bolton Date: 23 Nov 00 - 03:04 AM G'day Ernest, We had a thread on this a year or so back (Canadian ex-pat Australian wanted it for his son). I found the full words and history ... but tjhey don't seem to have got into the Digital Tradition (Digitrad ... or DT ... to locals). I will search for it in a full print-out of my earlier postings and get back with it. BTW: I suffer from having had to learn this in the Primary School choir - about 1955, when it was about six years old. Nonetheless, it is a good rollicking song ... It didn't stop me from ending up working there, on the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, about 12 years later! Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: ADD: SNOWY RIVER ROLL (B Lovelock) From: Bob Bolton Date: 23 Nov 00 - 03:26 AM G'day again Ernest, Maybe I was mistaken - that sounds more like something I would have done in an Australian forum - AusWorldFolk!
Here are the words ... SNOWY RIVER ROLL
This is the MIDItext of the tune - use Alan of Oz's program to get a workable MIDI .. or an ABC file.
MIDI file: snowyrol.mid Timebase: 240 TimeSig: 3/4 24 8 This program is worth the effort of learning it. To download the March 10 MIDItext 98 software and get instructions on how to use it click here ABC format: X:1

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Snowy River From: Sourdough Date: 24 Nov 00 - 11:29 AM Bob Bolton: Very intereting song. It is reminiscent of the work of WOody Guthrie from the days he was hired by the US government to go up along the Columbia River and write songs to encourage support of the huge public works projects. He turned out thirty or more songs in a month including Talking Columbia and Roll On COlumbia. THe lyric style brings those songs to mind. By an odd coicindence, the lead contractor on the Snowy River Project was the same one who did the Bonneville and Grand Coulee Dams, Henry Kaiser. One of Kaiser's project managers had a mountain named for him I believe in appreciation by the Australian government, Mt. Tom Price. Now I have to go and figure out how to use the Midi program so I can hear a melody. Sourdough |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Snowy River Roll (Bill Lovelock) From: Bob Bolton Date: 02 Jul 14 - 12:54 AM G'day GUEST ronelwa ... ... You may have heard the third line of the third stanza as "...N needles to ease all my troubles away...." but I can guarantee that it was: "N' diesels to ease all my troubles away" ...! I spent some time dodging various incarnations of 'diesels' - from 10 ton trucks to tortuous Tournapulls conveying rocks, concrete and various mortar across Tasmanian and Snowy Mts Hydro dams during the 1960s ... and anybody whose reaction to the heavy working involved "needles" needed a good explanation to stay in the "big construction game"! Regards, BobB |

Subject: RE: ADD: Snowy River Roll (Bill Lovelock) From: GUEST Date: 28 Jan 25 - 05:56 AM It was a theme song of the Snowy River project, I remember it being sung on film of the project when touring the system in the late 1960's/ early 1970's. |
