Hi,

I have finally settled on a version I want to sing.

I have a few queries regarding the lyrics.

Can anyone shed any light on the meaning of the following lines (full lyrics at end of posting).

"Sweet banners seldom ride."

"Go hide your clothes ye roses red,
And droop ye lilies fair"

"Then spied in my arms, and all her charms,"

I was having extreme difficulty trying to get those earlier lyrics to work.

I'll try the new set.

The reason I can't sing the rebellion version is that it would almost certainly offend someone and I don't want to do that.

Incidentally - I am an Irish person living in Wales and am looking for acceptance. Although there are a lot of people here with Irish roots there are also a lot of people with English roots or who's relations have done army service in N.Ireland. Therefore I deem it in-appropriate.

Guest Sean, the lyrics that Wolfgang linked you to are to a completely different tune than the rebel Foggy Dew. The DT had the wrong midi for it (haven't checked lately to see if it is corrected). The Contemplator site has the correct midi for Foggy Dew - A Wan Cloud Was Drawn. There are two others that are to the same tune as the rebel version. I will look them up and add links here.

Why can't you sing the proper version, I understand that there are biggoted people, not just in Ulster but in many parts of Scotland, some parts of England - but I bet parts of U.S.A. Canada, Australia etc as well. I think it is important that people should know this so they can show solidarity with you

the DT uses the same tune for this song. And it fits nicely. But there might be more songs to this tune.

Which version of Foggy Dew is the one which was used to generate the rebellion version -

"As down the road one Easter morn to a Ciy fair road I"

I ask because I really like the tune but can't risk singing the republican lyrics in this neck of the woods.

So I want to put the original words back in - but which set is the correct set - there are about 7 versions listed in the database.
