The King Tut thread reminded me of archy and mehitabel (the cockroach and the alley cat) by don marquis. Specifically, mehitabel's belief that she was connected by reincarnation to Ancient Egypt ("the palaces i've been thrown out of in my time"). Does anyone know if any of the pieces have ever been set to music? Yours, Peter (wothehell archy, wothehell)

I have an LP that says it's

"archy and mehitabel
a back-alley opera
narrated by
DAVID WAYNE
Words - JOE DARION
Music - GEORGE KLEINSINGER
Notes - E. B. White
based on stories and vignettes of
DON MARQUIS
orchestra conducted by the composer."

The other side says it has

"DAVID WAYNE
echoes of archy"
(Words, music, conducted as above)

The cast is Carol Channing, Eddie Bracken, and Percival Dove. It looks (and sounds) like a show, Broadway or off, but the cover doesn't say.

It's good.

What I have is a Columbia Special Products reissue, Columbia AOL 4963, (P) 1974,

A second recommendation for the album mentioned by Dick Wisan above--I've heard it a few times on the radio, though (alas) I don't own the recording myself. It's a wonderful setting of the characters; after hearing it I went straight to my library and got out the Don Marquis archy and mehitabel collections. I also remember Rosalie Sorrels doing some of the material, though my foggy brain can't remember just where.

Howdy Peter T,

My memory tells me that "Always a Lady" is the Rosalie Sorrels album with some tales of archie and mehitabel and the great song that I love to do about the moth. I found out about Don Marquis first from this album many years ago and then was able to find a copy of all three archie and mehitabel books at a university library. Great stuff.

Allinkausay,
Bill

Is it true that Mehitabel, in one production of the Carol Channing-vintage adaptation cited in this thread, was played by Eartha Kitt? Now, THAT I would have paid money for, had I been around then. "Santa Baby, hurry down the chimney to-nightttttt." Some pussy-cat.

If they ever revive that production, the Australian musician Archie Roach would be a natural for one of the roles.

I have long enjoyed archy and mehitabel.

"always the lady, archy, always the lady. To hell with unrefined has always been my creed.

where I step a weed dies

i (an Egyptian mummy) 'm dry as a sandstorm in hell at high noon. "

a parrot named pete recently
who is an interesting bird
pete says he used
to belong to the fellow
that ran the mermaid tavern
in london then i said
you must have known
shakespeare know him said pete
poor mutt i knew him well
he called me pete and i called him
bill but why do you say poor mutt
well said pete bill was a
disappointed man and was always
boring his friends about what
he might have been and done
if he only had a fair break
two or three pints of sack
and sherris and the tears
would trickle down into his
beard and his beard would get
soppy and wilt his collar
i remember one night when
bill and ben jonson and
frankie beaumont
were sopping it up

The Broadway production of "Shinbone Alley" was a 49-performance flop in the spring of 1957 (13 April-25 May). It indeed starred Eartha Kitt (understudied by Chita Rivera) and Eddie Bracken. The entire production is available on CD from Amazon. A legal bootleg of a recording from the house mikes?

In 1970, "Shinbone Alley" became an animated film, this time with Carol Channing and Eddie Bracken. Copies may be found at the usual places...
