Does anyone have the words of the Welsh hymn "Calon lan" (in Welsh, of course)?

Subject: Lyr Add: CALON LAN / A PURE HEART (Welsh)
From: Jon Freeman
Date: 27 Nov 00 - 06:36 PM

Just found this together with an English translation:

Nid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus,
Aur y byd na'i berlau mƒn:
Gofyn wyf am galon hapus,
Calon onest, calon lƒn.

Cytgan:
Calon lƒn yn llawn daioni,
Tecach yw na'r lili dlos:
Dim ond calon lƒn all ganu-
Canu'r dydd a chanu'r nos.

Pe dymunwn olud bydol,
Hedyn buan ganddo sydd;
Golud calon lƒn, rinweddol,
Yn dwyn bythol elw fydd.

Hwyr a bore fy nymuniad
Gwyd i'r nef ar edyn cƒn
Ar i Dduw, er mwyn fy Ngheidwad,
Roddi i mi galon lƒn.

A Pure Heart

It is difficult to translate the Welsh word "glan" into English. At it's simplest, it means "clean". However, it is used in hymns and prayers with a sense of "holy" (c.f., "Yr Ysbryd Glan" - "The Holy Spirit") or "pure". Either sense fits this lovely hymn.

I don't ask for a luxurious life,
the world's gold or its fine pearls:
I ask for a happy heart,
an honest heart, a pure heart.

Chorus:
A pure heart is full of goodness,
More lovely than the pretty lily:
Only a pure heart can sing -
Sing day and night.

If I wished worldly wealth,
He has a swift seed;
The riches of a virtuous, pure heart,
Will be a perpetual profit.

Late and early, my wish
Rise to heavan on the wing of song,
To God, for the sake of my Saviour,
Give me a pure heart.

Jon
I have a version with a couple of differences from yours, but my Welsh isn't good enough to know if they're just typos or not.

In the chorus it gives "Does ond calon lƒn all ganu", but I've always sung "Dim ond" as you give.
Where yours has Hedyn mine has Edyn.
Mine has rhinweddol with an "h", not rinweddol.
In the last verse mine has both "nef ar" and "i mi" as one word not two.

Perhaps some of our Welsh speakers can set us right on this.

Re: "Does ond" versus "Dim ond" ... I've seen both, and the sense is the same. I think it's a variation you find between denominational hymn books. Working from memory, I think the North American Welsh hymn book uses "Dim ond".

I think "Hedyn" is correct (seed); again, orthography in Welsh was ... ummm ... a tad 'fluid' until the 20th century so things like Hs suffered from individual interpretation.

"Rhinweddol" is an adjective modifying the feminine noun "calon" so it would mutate to "rinweddol".

And if Tegwyn comes in on any of this and says otherwise, for god's sake take HIS word for it, not mine!

Subject: Lyr/Tune Add: CALON LÂN
From: Snuffy
Date: 19 Oct 02 - 03:21 PM

CALON LÂN has made it into the new DT but under the title CALON LIN!!!!!!! But only in two English translations. There is neither the tune nor the original Welsh words. Here's both.

CALON LÂN

Nid wy'n gofyn bywyd maethus
Aur y byd na'i berlau mân,
Gofyn wyf am galon hapus,
Calon onest, Calon lân.
Calon lân yn llawn daioni
Techach yw na'r lili dlos
Does ond Calon lân all ganu
Canu'r dydd a chanu'r nos.
Pe dymunwn olud bydol,
Edyn buan ganddo sydd,
Golud calon lân rhinweddol,
Yn dwyn bythol elw fydd.

Hywr a bore fy nymuniad
Gwyd i'r nefar edyn cân,
Ar i Dduw, er mwyn fy Ngheidwad
Roddi imi galon lân

Calon Lin probably came from a screwed up attempt to get a circumflex over the "a", like the calon lƒn in some of the previous posts in this thread.

Not quite Ray. Part of the difficulty here was down to inconsistent useages of character sets here. At one point, I think over an Irish/Gaelic thread it became clear that different servers behaved differently - the same post would read differently...

Bungled? no, the fact was, as posted these things did display correctly. Could we have used better methods? Yes.

Refresh:
St David's Day is close upon us.
Being a Sunday we can look forward to a few 'belting' hymn tunes in church. (even if it is mid-Lent)
I've just finished typing this up in MuseScore with 2 verses in each language: 1, Nid wyn gofyn 2, I ask not, 3, Why should I, 4, Hwyr y bore.
I've managed to omit all the accents (might ink them in before photocopying) but I have managed the 4-part harmony.

Also at our 10.30 service:
Aberystwyth (Jesu lover of my soul)
Cwm Rhondda (Guide me O thou Great Redeemer)

Cheers / Hwyl fawr

Nigel
