Can't find any mention of this in the Trad or Threads. Surely someone knows this song. Some of the words are; "Please Daddy and I'll be good. Please Daddy and I'll be good. This is what I heard him say, and it haunts me night and day. Don't make me go to bed and I'll be good." Anyone????

I have it on "Best of THe Sad Songs" Cassette King KSC-1454 by Mac Wiseman also on a 12" LP "When Tragedy Struck" by Hank Snow Check at your local record store they all have a computer program of all songs by title also cross indexed by singer so it is quite possible it is still out on some label or by an other singer-- Good luck

I can come close: this set of lyrics is only an approximation. This is one of my favorite tearjerkers. "A laughing baby boy one evening in our home/ disturbed the household with his noisy glee/ I told him to be quiet but he soon would disobey/ for he did soon forget a word from me/I called him to my side and said 'Now son, you go to bed/ Your conduct has been very, very rude'/ With quivering lips and tear-filled eyes he pleaded with me then/ 'Don't make me go to bed and I'll be good'/ Don't, Papa, and I'll be good/ Don't, Papa, and I'll be good/ That's what I heard him say, and it haunts me night and day/ Don't make me go to bed and I'll be good//Our lives had just been brightened by His bright, ascending grace[??]/ the boy now in our hearts was very dear/ We looked into his room one night, he was crying in his sleep/ he didn't seem to know that we were near/ I took him in my arms and found his body wracked with pain/ to ease the pain we did the best we could/ It broke my heart to hear him crying loudly in his sleep/ 'Don't make me go to bed and I'll be good/ Don,t, Papa...//All night and day we watched and prayed, we never left his side/ To give him up, it seemed we never could/ It broke my heart to hear him crying just before he died/ 'Don't make me go to bed and I'll be good// Ouch! Anyway, that's the general idea. The song was written by someone named Hugh Cross, and was one of many signature songs for Roy Acuff, who wept profusely as he sang it. Can anyone correct a few suspect passages in this version?

I think we're missing a chord changed here. To my ear, it goes: [D]A laughing baby boy, one [G] evening in his {E7]play. Sounds to me like it goes grom G to E7 each time, in both verse and chorus.

Gern, I don't know beans about chord changes. I just copied what I found. By the way, I like "wracked" better than "raked" -- I should have changed that.

Thank you very much; Allen, Gern,and Jim Dixon, I remember hearing Roy Acuff singing this song on the Grand Ole Opry, sixty years ago. I still remember the tune, but had forgotten the Lyrics. You've all made my Day. Isn't MudCat and the MudCaters wonderful. I'm proud to be one of you. Thanks again.
