Subject: Help: Hanakkuh and Solstice
From: guinnesschik
Date: 29 Nov 00 - 09:47 AM

We're playing a gig on Dec. 22nd, and thought it would be great fun to not only play some traditional Christmas tunes, but to sing a play a few songs honoring Winter Solstice and Hanakkuh, as well. Sheet music links would be REALLY helpful.

In advance, thank ya'll so much! I know some helpful 'Catter will have wonderful sources.

;-)g'chik

I've got tons of this stuff. Are you looking for songs, instrumentals, arrangements???
For Chanukah:
In My Window
Joyous Chanukah
Ocho Candelitas
My dreydl (it would be really fun to do this Klezmer-style)

For Solstice
I have 2 solstice songs by my good friend Alouette Iselin that I sing whenever I'm at a singaround, no matter what the time of year.
The Four Noble Trees by Mark Vyvian-Jones from the book Winter Solstice (with the Green Man on the cover)
Light is Returning

Sheet music, now that's a challenge. Want to pm me your address? I have a few things on Noteworthy Composer, so could email you those. Let me know!

You could also do a forum search and glean wisdom from previous years: we talk about it every year at this time!

G'day guinesschik,

Why stop at Christmas, Hanukkah and the Winter Solstice? You may as well throw in something for the Bacchanalia and make a clean sweep of it!

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: EIGHT CANDLES (Malvina Reynolds)
From: Stewart
Date: 01 Dec 00 - 12:21 AM

Here's a Malvina Reynolds' Hanakkuh song:

EIGHT CANDLES  — Malvina Reynolds

(chorus before each verse)
Eight candles shine for the Maccabees.   Dm A7 DmA7Dm
Eight candles shine for the Maccabees.   Dm A7 DmA7Dm

Down from the mountains with Liberty's sword,   F C7 F A7
They came like the flame of the Lord.          Dm C7 A

The tyrant was routed with all of his men,
And the temple made holy again.

Hanukah's children will never forget
The glory that shines for us yet.

(chorus after each verse)
Dance the horah, light the menorah, F   Gm
This is the time of joy,   C   F
The road to freedom we take today,  D7 Gm Dm
With the Maccabees leading the way. A7    Dm

Cheers, S. in Seattle

Another good one for this Chanukah. Thanks for posting it, Stewart! (Can't get the MIDI to play, though, but that's probably a glitch in my software.)

It's that time of year again! I love being a choral director- I get to listen to and arrange winter holiday songs in August!
...Anyone know any good Saturnalia songs? Diwali songs?
